Adding a New Water Point at Home
Routes, Drains & Cost (2026)

A tap in the yard, the balcony or a prayer corner? Here is what decides how big the job is.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

New wall tap on a tiled yard wall with a surface-mounted pipe and a floor trap below

A new water point is a branch teed off the nearest suitable pipe and run to the new position, either surface-mounted or chased into the wall and plastered over, ending in a stop valve or tap. The job size depends on three questions: which pipe can feed it (the direct mains line or the tank-fed line), whether the water also needs a drain, and whether the floor there is already a wet area. A small add-on near existing pipes is a minor plumbing job; ClickBina's published example of a wudhu tap point with waterproofing and drainage is RM800 – RM3,000 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

Why owners add a water point

Developers put taps where the standard layout needs them: the kitchen sink, the bathrooms and the yard. Life rarely matches the standard layout. Owners add water points for a wudhu corner, a balcony or yard tap for washing, a second sink in a wet kitchen, a kitchen island, a water filter, a fridge with an ice maker, a utility sink in a store room, or a tap at the car porch.

Most of these are simple if there is a pipe close by. They become bigger jobs when the new tap is far from any existing pipe, when the water also has to drain away, or when the new spot sits on a dry floor upstairs. This guide walks through those decisions so you can describe the job clearly and judge a quote.

Where the water comes from: mains line or tank line

Most Malaysian houses use an indirect system. The kitchen sink tap is usually fed straight from the mains, while bathrooms, showers, toilets and the water heater are fed from the roof tank. A new tap is teed off one of these two lines, and the choice matters.

FeedPressureGood forWatch for
Direct mains lineMains pressureDrinking water, filters, kitchen island sinksPressure varies by area and time of day
Tank-fed lineDepends on tank heightWashing taps, yard and balcony taps, wudhu pointsWeak flow on upper floors without a booster
Hot-water lineSame as the heater feedA second basin or kitchen hot tapNeeds a heater that can serve the extra outlet

For a tap you drink from, or a water filter, ask for the mains line. For washing, the tank line is normal. ClickBina's roof water tank guide explains the indirect system in more detail.

Surface pipe or concealed pipe

A surface-mounted pipe is clipped along the wall. It is quicker, cheaper and easy to reach for repairs, which is why it suits yards, store rooms, porches and the back of cabinets. A concealed pipe is chased into the wall, then plastered and tiled or painted over. It looks cleaner but the wall is cut, and any joint inside it is hard to reach later.

Chasing a wall makes dust and noise, and the patch needs plastering and repainting or retiling. ClickBina's wall chasing guide covers how chases are cut and patched. In a finished room, a neat surface run hidden behind a cabinet is often the sensible middle way.

Pipe material and joints

New domestic runs are commonly PPR, with heat-fused joints, or a material that matches the existing pipe. The transition from old pipe to new is the most likely leak point, so it should be made with the right fitting, not improvised. ClickBina's water pipe material guide compares the common pipe types, and the PPR joint guide explains why fusion joints fail and how they are pressure-tested before a wall is closed.

Does the new tap need a drain?

This is the question that most changes the price. A tap that fills a bucket or a filter jug may need no drain at all. A tap over a sink needs a waste pipe that falls to the drains, with a trap to stop smells. A tap used on the floor, such as a wudhu point or a yard washing tap, needs a floor that falls to a floor trap.

  • No drain: filter taps, a fridge or ice-maker line, a tap over an existing floor trap.
  • Sink waste: a new basin or sink; the waste must reach an existing drain with a proper fall.
  • Floor trap: any tap where water lands on the floor; the floor must be waterproofed and fall to the trap.

ClickBina's washing machine point guide walks through the same water-in, water-out logic for a washer.

Wet floor or dry floor

A new tap in a yard, a wet kitchen or a bathroom sits on a floor that is already waterproofed and already falls to a trap. A new tap on a dry floor, such as a bedroom corner, a dry kitchen or an upstairs corridor, is different: if anything leaks or overflows, the water has nowhere to go.

For a tap used on the floor in a dry area, plan a small waterproofed wet corner with its own trap, the way a wudhu corner is usually built. For a tap over a sink in a dry area, the sink and its waste do the job, but put the stop valve where it can be reached.

Adding hot water to the new point

Hot water needs a second pipe from a heater. If the new point is next to a bathroom with a storage heater, a hot branch may be possible. Otherwise, the usual answer is a small point-of-use heater at the new tap, which needs its own electrical point. ClickBina's water heater installation guide covers wiring and installation costs.

Condos and upper floors

In a condo, the pipes inside the unit are usually the owner's, but the risers, the slab and the common drains are not. Hacking into the slab or tying into a shared stack needs the management's approval, and most buildings set rules for wet works. ClickBina's strata renovation rules guide explains the usual conditions.

Upstairs in a landed house, a leak from a new point runs into the ceiling below, so the joints, the stop valve and any wet-floor detailing matter more than downstairs.

What a new water point costs

These are ClickBina's published ranges (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). The total depends on the distance to the nearest pipe and drain, and on whether a wall or floor has to be opened.

A point-of-use heater adds the heater and its wiring; ClickBina's plumbing guide lists water heater installation from RM200 labour, with the unit extra. The closer the new tap is to an existing pipe and drain, the smaller the job.

Common Questions

How much does it cost to add a new water point in Malaysia?
It depends on distance and drainage. ClickBina's published example of a wudhu tap point with waterproofing and drainage is RM800–RM3,000, and long pipe runs to the far end of a house can add RM3,000–RM8,000 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Can I add a tap anywhere in my house?
Usually, if a supply pipe can reach it. The harder part is the drain: a tap used on the floor needs a waterproofed floor that falls to a trap.
Should a new drinking water tap come from the mains or the tank?
From the mains line, which normally feeds the kitchen sink. Washing taps are normally fed from the tank line.
Is a concealed pipe better than a surface pipe?
It looks cleaner, but the wall is cut and joints are hard to reach later. A neat surface run behind a cabinet is often the practical choice.
Do I need approval to add a water point in a condo?
Work inside the unit is usually allowed, but hacking the slab or tying into common pipes needs the management's approval. Check the building's renovation rules first.
Can I add hot water to the new tap?
Yes, either as a branch from an existing heater nearby or with a small point-of-use heater, which needs its own electrical point.
Does a wudhu corner need a floor trap?
Yes. Water lands on the floor, so the corner should be waterproofed and fall to its own trap.
