Food Waste Disposer Installation
Will It Fit Your Sink, and What It Costs (2026)

Thinking of a sink disposer? What your kitchen needs before one goes in, how it connects, and what goes wrong.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

Food waste disposer mounted under a stainless steel kitchen sink with the trap and a switched socket

A food waste disposer is an electric grinder fitted under the kitchen sink, between the sink drain and the trap. Installing one needs a sink outlet that suits the unit, space in the cabinet, a switched power point under the sink and a waste pipe that drains well; in a condo, check the management's rules first. The disposer itself is bought separately. On ClickBina's guides, replacing a sink and tap is RM150 – RM400 labour including a new waste trap, and a concealed socket RM200 – RM400 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). Fats and grease should still never go down it.

What a food waste disposer is

A food waste disposer, also called a garbage disposal or in-sink macerator, is a motor-driven grinding chamber that hangs under the sink. Food scraps go down the plughole with running cold water, a spinning plate throws them against a grind ring, and the fine pieces wash through the trap into the drain.

There are two main types. Continuous-feed units run while you feed scraps in and are switched on and off by a wall switch or air button. Batch-feed units only run with a special cover in place, which keeps cutlery and fingers out, so they are considered the safer type.

Does your kitchen suit one?

CheckWhy it matters
Sink outletThe disposer mounts in the sink's drain opening; check the maker's fitting suits your sink
Cabinet spaceThe unit hangs below the sink and must clear the trap, pipes and any shelf
Socket under the sinkNeeds a switched power point in the sink cabinet, kept away from water
Waste pipe and fallGround scraps need a drain that runs freely; a slow drain gets worse
Double-bowl sinkUsually fitted to one bowl only, with the other bowl's waste joined below
Condo or strata rulesSome managements restrict disposers; ask before buying

ClickBina's kitchen sink and tap guide covers sink types, undermount versus topmount and fitting the sink itself. A disposer adds weight and vibration below the sink, so the mounting and the cabinet base matter more than with a plain waste.

The power point under the sink

Most homes do not have a socket inside the sink cabinet, so adding one is usually part of the job. It should sit high in the cabinet, away from the trap and any drips, with a switch you can reach without putting your hand near the sink opening. This is electrical work for a competent electrician, not a plumber.

ClickBina's guide to adding power points explains concealed versus surface wiring, and the socket placement guide covers how far sockets should sit from a sink.

Connecting the trap and a dishwasher

The disposer replaces the sink's normal waste outlet and sits between the drain and the trap, so the trap is re-fitted lower down to suit the disposer's outlet. Every joint must be checked with water running, because a slow drip here soaks the cabinet base unseen.

If you have a dishwasher, its waste usually joins the sink waste or has its own trap, as ClickBina's fridge, dishwasher and microwave cabinet guide explains. Many disposers have a dishwasher inlet, but it must be opened and connected correctly or the dishwasher will not drain. The leak under the sink guide shows how to find a wet joint if something drips later.

What can and cannot go in

Usually fineKeep out
Soft food scraps and plate leftoversCooking oil, fat and grease
Small vegetable and fruit peelingsLarge bones and shells
Rice and noodles in small amountsFibrous husks and stringy stems in bulk
Small amounts with plenty of cold waterCutlery, bottle caps, plastic, tissue

Run cold water before, during and after grinding, and feed scraps gradually rather than a full plate at once. Oil and grease are the main enemy: they cool and harden in the pipe, which is why ClickBina's grease trap guide calls FOG the main cause of blocked kitchen lines. A disposer does not change that.

Drains, condos and the building

A disposer moves food waste from the bin into the drain. That is fine on a free-running drain with a good fall; on an old or partly blocked line, ground scraps settle and add to the build-up. If your sink already drains slowly, sort that first.

In condos and apartments the kitchen waste joins a shared stack. Some managements restrict disposers because a blockage affects the units below, so check the house rules or ask the management office before buying. Food waste disposers are also restricted in some other countries for business premises, mainly to protect sewers and recover food waste, so never assume a commercial kitchen may fit one.

Jams, leaks and smells

  • Hums but does not turn: jammed. Switch off at the socket, then free the plate from above with the tool the maker supplies, or turn the motor shaft from below with a hex key.
  • Will not start at all: check the reset button on the unit, the switch and the socket before calling anyone.
  • Leak at the top: the sink mounting seal; the unit must be re-seated.
  • Leak at the side or bottom: the trap or dishwasher joint, or a cracked body that means replacement.
  • Smell: food left in the chamber; grind with cold water and clean the splash guard.
  • Sink drains slowly after grinding: build-up in the trap or the pipe beyond it.

What the related work costs

Disposer units are retail items with prices that vary by brand and motor size, so they are not priced here. The related work is published on ClickBina's guides (indicative 2026, Klang Valley):

A fitting quote should say who supplies the disposer, whether a socket is included, how the trap and any dishwasher hose are connected, and whether the sink outlet needs changing.

Is a disposer worth it?

It suits households that cook a lot and dislike food scraps sitting in the kitchen bin in the heat. It is a poor fit for a slow or shared drain you cannot control, a kitchen with no room or power under the sink, or a condo that does not allow one. A fine sink strainer and a sealed food-waste bin emptied daily are the low-cost alternative.

Common Questions

Can any kitchen sink take a food waste disposer?
Most standard sink outlets can, but check the disposer maker's fitting suits your sink, and that there is cabinet space and a socket.
Does a food waste disposer need a power point?
Yes. It needs a switched socket inside the sink cabinet, placed away from water. That is electrical work.
Can I connect a dishwasher to a food waste disposer?
Usually yes, through the disposer's dishwasher inlet, which must be opened and connected correctly or the dishwasher will not drain.
Are food waste disposers allowed in condos?
It depends on the building. Some managements restrict them because the kitchen stack is shared. Ask before buying.
Can oil go down a food waste disposer?
No. Oil and grease cool and harden in the pipe and cause blockages, with or without a disposer.
What do I do if my disposer jams?
Switch it off at the socket, then free the plate from above with the maker's tool or turn the shaft from below with a hex key.
How much does it cost to fit a disposer?
It depends on the sink and power. On ClickBina's guides a concealed socket is RM200–RM400 and sink-and-tap replacement labour RM150–RM400.
