Drain Cleaner Chemicals
Acid vs Caustic vs Enzyme, and What Damages Pipes (2026)

What is really in the bottle, when it helps, and why plumbers ask what you poured in before they start.

Shop drain cleaners come in three families: caustic (alkaline) products that attack grease and hair, acid products that are stronger and harsher, and enzyme or biological products that work slowly on the film inside pipes. The first two can clear a light, recent clog, but they are hard on older pipes, seals and traps, dangerous if they splash or are mixed, and they make the job hazardous for whoever opens the pipe next. Enzyme products are for upkeep, not blockages. For a real blockage, a plunger or a plumber's tools are safer. ClickBina's guides put a sink, floor-trap or shower clear at RM120 – RM350 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

The three kinds of drain chemical

Walk down the cleaning aisle and the bottles all promise the same thing. Underneath, they fall into three families that work in completely different ways. Read the hazard label on the back, not the claim on the front: it tells you which family you are holding.

TypeWhat it works onMain risks
Caustic (alkaline) drain openerGrease, soap scum, hair and food fatBurns skin and eyes; heat; hard on old metal pipes and rubber seals
Acid drain cleanerScale, mineral build-up and stubborn organic clogsThe most dangerous to handle; fumes; attacks metal, grout and some fittings
Enzyme or biological cleanerThe slime film lining pipes and trapsSlow; does nothing to a solid blockage
Oxygen or foaming cleanersLight film and odourMild; not a blockage remover

ClickBina's plumbing guides consistently warn against strong caustic and acid products for blockages. The clogged drain cleaning guide explains why a drain blocks in the first place and what clears it properly.

Caustic drain openers

Caustic products are strongly alkaline. They react with fats and hair and turn them soft and soapy, which is why they can clear a slow kitchen sink choked with fresh grease. They also produce heat as they work. On a short, recent clog in sound plastic pipe, a caustic product may work.

Their limits are just as clear. They do little to cement waste, sand, wet wipes, lint or a foreign object. Poured onto a full blockage, they sit in standing water above it, at full strength, waiting for whoever plunges or opens the trap next. Repeated doses also attack rubber seals and the joints of older pipes.

Acid drain cleaners

Acid drain cleaners are the strongest and most dangerous products on the shelf. They are sold for toilets and heavy clogs, and some households use the same acids sold for cleaning tiles and toilet bowls. They give off fumes, react violently with caustic products and some other cleaners, and attack metal, grout, stone and chrome.

ClickBina's toilet repair guide gives the practical warning: an acid drain cleaner often just sits on a solid blockage, and it is dangerous if it splashes back or mixes with another chemical. If the first dose has not worked, a second one will not either.

Enzyme and biological cleaners

Enzyme and bacterial products work on the organic film that lines the inside of pipes and traps: the slime that holds hair, feeds drain flies and causes a sour smell. They are slow, they need time in the pipe without being flushed straight through, and they are gentle on pipes and seals.

That makes them a maintenance product, not a blockage remover. They suit a slow bathroom basin, a smelly floor trap or a drain where small flies keep breeding; the drain flies guide explains how the film breeds them. On a drain that has stopped completely, an enzyme product will simply sit there.

What strong chemicals do to pipes, seals and traps

Most of the damage is slow and out of sight. Older homes in the Klang Valley still have cast-iron stacks, galvanised steel branches and mixed materials joined with rubber rings and solvent cement. Strong caustic and acid products attack these at the joints and seals first. The drainage and sewer pipe materials guide explains which materials sit under a typical house.

  • Rubber seals and washers harden or swell, and a joint that held for years starts to weep.
  • Old metal pipes lose wall thickness where chemicals sit, which shows up later as a leak.
  • Heat from a caustic reaction in a blocked trap can soften thin plastic fittings.
  • Chrome grates, stainless sinks, grout and stone around the drain get etched or stained.

Never mix, never plunge after, never pour into a stack blockage

Three rules cover most chemical accidents with drains.

  1. Never mix products, and never follow one drain cleaner with another. Caustic and acid together react violently, and bleach mixed with acid or ammonia-based cleaners releases toxic gas.
  2. Never plunge, snake or open a trap after pouring chemicals in. The plunger throws the liquid back at you.
  3. Never pour chemicals into a floor trap or toilet when the blockage is in a shared stack. In a condo, the blockage is often in the building's pipe, the chemical will not reach it, and the backed-up water becomes dangerous for everyone.

The condo sewer stack blockage guide explains how to tell a stack blockage from one in your own unit, and who is responsible for clearing it.

If it splashes or you breathe the fumes

Treat any splash on skin or in the eyes as urgent: rinse with plenty of running water straight away, remove contaminated clothing, and get medical help, taking the bottle so the product can be identified. If fumes have built up, leave the room and ventilate it. Keep drain chemicals in their original containers, out of reach of children, and away from other cleaning products. In Malaysia, the National Poison Centre is the reference point for poisoning advice.

What to try instead

  • Lift the grate and pull the hair and debris out of the floor trap or basin waste by hand, with gloves.
  • Use a cup plunger on a sink or basin, with the overflow covered, and a flange plunger on a toilet.
  • Run hot, not boiling, water down a greasy kitchen sink; boiling water can damage plastic pipes.
  • Clean the bottle trap under a basin or sink over a bucket.
  • Use an enzyme product regularly on drains that smell or breed flies.

For a washing machine that floods the floor trap, the washing machine backing up guide explains why lint, not grease, is usually the cause, which no chemical will dissolve.

When to stop and call a plumber

Stop and call for help when the blockage comes back within weeks, when more than one fixture is slow, when water rises in one drain as another is used, when there is a sewage smell, or when chemicals have already been poured in. Tell the plumber exactly what was used: a pipe full of caustic or acid changes how they approach the job. Recurring blockages often need the line cleaned along its whole length; the hydro-jetting guide explains why a snake only buys time on a coated pipe.

Common Questions

Do drain cleaners damage pipes?
Strong caustic and acid products can, especially older metal pipes, rubber seals and joints. Enzyme products are gentle but only treat the film inside pipes.
Which is stronger, caustic or acid drain cleaner?
Acid products are generally the harsher and more dangerous to handle; caustic products work mainly on grease and hair.
Can I use an enzyme cleaner on a fully blocked drain?
It will not clear a solid blockage. Use it for smells, slow drains and drain flies.
I poured a drain cleaner in and it did not work. Can I add another?
No. Never mix products or add a second dose; tell the plumber exactly what you used.
Is it safe to plunge after using chemicals?
No. The plunger can throw the chemical back at you. Wait for a professional and say what is in the drain.
What should I use instead of chemicals?
Clean the trap and grate by hand, use the right plunger, and run hot rather than boiling water down greasy sinks.
How much does it cost to clear a blocked sink or floor trap?
ClickBina's guides list a sink, floor-trap or shower clear at RM120 – RM350 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
