Weak Water Flow at One Tap or Shower
Aerator, Cartridge, Head or Pipe (2026)

The rest of the house is fine but one tap or shower barely runs? Here is how to find the restriction, from the outlet backwards.

Basin tap with a weak stream and its clogged aerator removed beside it

If only one tap or shower is weak and the rest of the house is fine, the problem is almost always at or near that outlet, not the water supply: a clogged aerator or shower head, a kinked or collapsed hose, a half-closed angle valve, a blocked cartridge or filter inside the mixer, or a narrowed pipe feeding that one point. Work from the outlet backwards. A booster pump is the fix for weak pressure across the whole house, not for one weak shower. On ClickBina guides a basic plumbing call-out and minor repair is RM80 – RM250 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

First: one outlet or the whole house?

Before taking anything apart, open two or three other taps in the house, including one on the same floor and one downstairs. If they all run weakly too, the problem is upstream: the supply, the roof tank, a pump or the main pipe. That is a different diagnosis, covered in our booster pump guide, which starts by ruling out a leak or supply problem.

If every other outlet is fine and only one basin tap, kitchen tap or shower is weak, the cause is local. That is good news: local faults are usually small parts, and fitting a pump will not fix them. The rest of this page works through those local causes in order, from the easiest to check to the hardest.

Is it hot, cold or both?

On a mixer tap or shower, test hot and cold separately. The answer narrows things down quickly:

  • Both hot and cold weak: the restriction is after the two supplies meet, so look at the aerator, shower head, hose or the mixer cartridge.
  • Only hot weak: look at the water heater and its connections, any check valve or filter on the hot side, and the hot-side isolating valve.
  • Only cold weak: look at the cold-side angle valve or stop valve and the cold flexible hose.

An instant water heater also needs a minimum flow of water to switch on. ClickBina's water-saving fittings guide explains that if the flow drops too far, the heater may not fire, so a weak shower can also turn into a cold one.

The aerator: the most common culprit at a tap

The aerator is the small mesh insert screwed into the end of the spout. It mixes air into the stream so it feels full. It also catches grit, scale and bits of debris, especially after pipe works or a supply disruption. As it clogs, the flow slowly drops, or the stream sprays sideways.

Unscrew it (by hand, or with a cloth around it so you do not scratch the spout), rinse out the debris, soak it in vinegar if it is scaled, and refit. If the tap runs strongly with the aerator off, you have found the problem. A damaged aerator is cheap to replace. ClickBina's water-saving guide also recommends descaling aerators regularly.

Shower head and hose

A shower head clogs the same way: scale and grit block the small nozzles, so the spray gets thin, patchy or spits sideways. Rubbing the soft rubber nozzles often clears them; a removable head can be soaked in vinegar. Some water-saving heads also have a flow restrictor inside. On a low-pressure floor, that restrictor can turn a shower into a trickle.

Check the hose too. A shower hose that has been kinked or twisted for years can collapse inside while looking fine outside. Unscrew the head and run the hose on its own: if the flow is strong, the head is the problem; if it is still weak, try without the hose at the mixer outlet. Our shower mixer guide explains the different mixer and shower set-ups.

Inside the tap: cartridges, washers and filters

Most modern single-lever mixers have a ceramic disc cartridge. Grit can lodge in it, or its inlet screens can block, and the tap gives weak flow even when fully open. Older two-handle taps have a headwork with a washer that can swell or come loose and partly block the seat. Thermostatic shower mixers usually have small inlet filters that catch debris and need cleaning.

Isolate the supply before opening a tap body. If the cartridge is blocked or worn, it can usually be replaced without changing the whole tap. Our dripping tap guide explains cartridges and washers in more detail.

Angle valves, stop valves and flexible hoses

Under a basin or sink, each tap is usually fed through an angle valve and a flexible hose. A valve that was half-closed during some earlier repair and never opened fully again is a surprisingly common cause of one weak tap. Open it fully, then check the flow again. A flexible hose that is kinked, too long and coiled, or collapsed inside also restricts flow. See our angle valve and flexible hose guide for when these parts need replacing.

Showers are often fed through a stop valve in the wall. Check that it is fully open too.

When the pipe itself is the problem

If the outlet, hose, valve and cartridge are all clear and the flow is still weak, the restriction is in the pipe feeding that point. Common causes:

  • Old galvanised iron pipe: ClickBina's rusty tap water guide explains that GI rusts from the inside, so the bore narrows and flow drops.
  • Debris after works: grit or a piece of sealing tape lodged in a fitting after pipe repairs.
  • A long or undersized branch: the furthest outlet on a thin branch is the first to lose flow when other taps are running.
  • A hidden leak on that branch, which can also push up the water bill.

Pipe problems mean opening walls or floors, so it is worth ruling out every small part first. Where old GI pipes are the cause, our re-piping cost guide explains the options.

The booster pump line is there for comparison. It is the right answer when the whole house is weak, and money wasted when only one outlet is.

Common Questions

Why is only one tap in my house weak?
Because the restriction is at or near that outlet: usually a clogged aerator, a blocked cartridge, a half-closed angle valve, a kinked hose or a narrowed pipe feeding that point.
Will a booster pump fix a weak shower?
Only if the whole house is weak. If other taps are fine, a pump will not fix a clogged head, hose, valve or cartridge.
How do I clean a tap aerator?
Unscrew it from the spout, rinse out the grit, soak it in vinegar if it is scaled, and refit it. If the flow is strong without it, the aerator was the problem.
Why is only the hot water weak?
Look at the hot side: the water heater and its connections, any check valve or filter, and the hot-side isolating valve.
Can old pipes cause weak flow at one tap?
Yes. ClickBina's rusty tap water guide explains that old galvanised iron pipes rust inside, narrowing the bore and reducing flow.
How much does it cost to fix a weak tap?
On ClickBina guides a basic call-out and minor repair is RM80–RM250, and a tap replacement is RM120–RM350 installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Why did my shower get weak after a water disruption?
Grit stirred up in the pipes often lodges in the shower head, aerator or mixer filter. Clean those first.
