PPR — the Malaysian residential standard

Polypropylene random copolymer (PP-R) is the green (sometimes white or grey) pipe that has become the default for concealed hot-and-cold plumbing in Malaysian homes, and for good reason. It is joined by heat fusion: the pipe and fitting are heated and fused into a single homogeneous piece with no glue and no threaded weak point, which is why a properly fused PPR joint rarely leaks. It is rated by PN pressure class — PN10 through PN25, with PN20 the common choice for combined hot-and-cold service — is completely corrosion-proof, does not scale, and carries a design life around 50 years at its rated conditions. Its weaknesses are specific and manageable: it must not be left exposed to direct sunlight (UV embrittles it over time), it expands more than metal with temperature so it needs proper support and allowance for movement, and the joint is only as good as the installer’s fusion technique and tooling. Stainless steel 304 vs 316

Stainless steel is the premium long-life plumbing material, and the two grades you will hear quoted differ in one meaningful way. Grade 304 is the standard austenitic stainless (chromium and nickel), excellent for general potable water. Joint & weld integrity compared

Pipes rarely fail along their length — they fail at the joints, so how each material is jointed matters as much as the material itself. PPR’s heat fusion creates a homogeneous joint with no glue and no thread, which is very strong when done right but wholly dependent on correct fusion time, temperature and clean preparation. HDPE’s butt and electrofusion joints are the gold standard for buried, leak-free connections. Stainless is either press-fitted — fast and reliable, provided the correct tool and jaw are used and the pipe is fully inserted — or TIG welded, the strongest option but one that demands a genuinely skilled welder. Copper’s soldered and brazed joints are proven but skill-dependent, and a “cold” or under-heated solder joint is a classic source of a slow, hidden leak years later. Pressure & temperature tolerance

Pressure ratings are quoted as PN classes, where the number is roughly the nominal pressure in bar the pipe can carry at a reference temperature. The catch that catches people out is that a plastic pipe’s pressure rating derates as the water gets hotter — which is precisely why hot-water lines in PPR should use a higher class such as PN20 or above, so there is margin left at temperature.
