Gas (LPG) Water Heater
Safety, Ventilation & When It Makes Sense (2026)

Thinking of a gas water heater? Here is how it works, why placement and venting matter so much, and when it is the right choice.

Gas instant water heater on an outside service-yard wall with its flue venting outdoors and an LPG cylinder

A gas water heater burns LPG to heat water as it flows, so it can supply strong, continuous hot water to several outlets without a large electrical load — but it produces combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, that must be vented outdoors. That makes it a question of where it can safely go: outside or in a well-ventilated service area with a proper flue, never inside a closed bathroom. It suits landed homes with an outdoor wall and existing LPG; for most condos an electric heater is simpler. Gas work should be done by a competent gas fitter; on our gas piping guide a single home LPG point is RM200 – RM600.

How a gas water heater works

Most gas water heaters sold for homes are instantaneous: when a hot tap opens, water flow triggers a burner that heats a copper heat exchanger, and the water comes out hot within seconds. Gas is supplied from an LPG cylinder through a regulator, or from piped gas where it is available. The burner needs air to burn, and the combustion products have to leave through a flue or be released outdoors.

Carbon monoxide: the reason placement matters

Any gas appliance burning in a space without enough fresh air can produce carbon monoxide, a gas you cannot see or smell. That is why a gas water heater must never be installed inside a closed bathroom and run with the door and window shut. The heater should sit outdoors, or in a ventilated service area, with the flue fitted exactly as the manufacturer specifies and discharging to open air.

  • Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions for location, clearances and flue.
  • Do not box a gas heater into a cabinet or enclosed ceiling void.
  • Keep vents clear; never block air openings to stop draughts or noise.
  • Have the heater serviced so the burner burns cleanly.

A carbon monoxide alarm near living and sleeping areas adds a layer of protection where any fuel-burning appliance is used indoors.

The gas side: cylinders, regulators and pipes

The gas supply to a water heater follows the same rules as any other gas appliance. Our gas piping guide explains that gas installation in Malaysia is regulated under the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) framework, and that the person who runs the pipe, sets the regulator and commissions the system should be a competent, trained gas fitter. Cylinders belong upright in a ventilated place away from ignition sources, connected with the right regulator and hose, and every new joint should be leak-tested.

LPG is heavier than air, so a leak collects low down. That affects where cylinders are kept and where any gas detector is mounted.

When a gas water heater makes sense

  • Landed homes with an outdoor wall near the bathrooms, where the heater can be mounted outside.
  • Homes already using LPG for cooking, with a sensible place for a cylinder or manifold.
  • Several bathrooms wanting hot water at once, where electric instant heaters would each need their own circuit.
  • Homes where the electrical supply is limited and adding heater circuits is difficult.

It usually does not make sense in a condo, where there is rarely a safe outdoor position, building rules may restrict gas cylinders, and electric heaters are simpler to install.

Think about the day-to-day side too. With cylinders, someone has to notice when the gas runs low, order a replacement and change it safely, and a cylinder that runs out mid-shower is a common annoyance; a two-cylinder setup with a changeover avoids it. The cylinder position has to be reachable for deliveries without carrying cylinders through the house. Hot water also takes a moment to arrive at a far bathroom, because the heater sits outside rather than next to the shower, so pipe runs should be kept as short as the layout allows. None of this rules gas out, but it is worth weighing against the simplicity of an electric heater in each bathroom.

Gas vs electric vs solar

Electric instant heaters are the most common choice in Malaysian bathrooms because they are compact and easy to install; storage heaters serve several outlets from one tank; solar heaters suit landed homes with roof space and cut running costs. Our water heater types guide compares the electric and solar options in detail, and the solar water heater guide covers solar systems. A gas heater is the option for strong multi-outlet hot water without extra electrical load, if you can place it safely.

What a proper installation includes

  1. A location outside or in a ventilated service area, checked against the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. A flue or outdoor discharge as specified, with the right clearances.
  3. A gas supply with the correct regulator, hose or metal pipe, and an isolation valve.
  4. Water connections with isolation valves, and hot-water pipes run to the bathrooms.
  5. A documented leak test and a check that the burner lights and runs properly.
  6. A handover explaining how to change cylinders and shut the gas off.

Hot-water pipes to several bathrooms usually mean opening walls or ceilings, so the job is best planned with a bathroom renovation. Our water heater installation guide explains what an installation quote should include.

Maintenance and warning signs

  • Yellow, sooty or lazy flames instead of a clean blue flame.
  • Soot or discolouration around the heater or flue.
  • The heater cutting out, or water temperature swinging.
  • Any smell of gas: shut the cylinder valve, ventilate, avoid switches and flames, and have it checked before using it again.

Have the heater and its gas connections checked periodically by a competent gas fitter, and replace hoses and regulators when they age or crack.

Common Questions

Is a gas water heater safe?
Yes, when it is installed outdoors or in a ventilated area with its flue fitted as the manufacturer specifies, and the gas side is done by a competent gas fitter. It must never run inside a closed bathroom.
Can I install a gas water heater inside the bathroom?
No. Burning gas in a closed room can produce carbon monoxide. Mount the heater outside or in a ventilated service area and pipe hot water to the bathroom.
Is a gas water heater worth it in a condo?
Usually not. There is rarely a safe outdoor position, building rules may restrict gas cylinders, and electric heaters are simpler.
Gas or electric water heater: which is better?
Electric instant heaters are simplest for one bathroom. Gas suits landed homes wanting strong hot water to several outlets without adding electrical circuits, if it can be placed safely.
Who should install a gas water heater?
A competent, trained gas fitter for the gas supply and commissioning, following the manufacturer's instructions and leak-testing every joint.
How much does the gas connection cost?
On our gas piping guide, a single home LPG point is RM200–RM600 and a home re-pipe or appliance relocation RM600–RM1,800 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
What are the warning signs of a problem?
Yellow or sooty flames, soot around the heater, cutting out, or any smell of gas. Stop using it and have it checked.
