A water purifier is a consumable device wearing a permanent-looking case. Everything that makes it work — the sediment cartridge, the carbon, the membrane if it has one, the post-filter — is designed to be used up and thrown away. Servicing is the act of doing that on schedule, plus the checks around it. Done properly, a visit covers:
A visit that swaps a cartridge in five minutes and leaves has done a third of that. The other two-thirds are what stops the unit becoming a problem instead of a solution.
“Water purifier” covers several quite different machines, and the service scope differs with each:

A whole-house outdoor “master” filter sits at the point the mains enters the property and protects the plumbing and appliances; a drinking purifier sits at one tap and treats what you drink. Manufacturers publish cartridge life in litres, and then everybody converts it into months because months are easier to remember. That conversion assumes an average household. Yours may not be one.
Two homes with identical units can be a long way apart. A household of six drinking and cooking from the tap puts several times the volume through the unit that a couple does. Incoming water quality moves it further: sediment loading varies across the Klang Valley, and it rises sharply after mains work, a supply interruption or a burst in the area, when disturbed sediment reaches every tap downstream. A week of that can consume a meaningful share of a sediment cartridge’s life.
So treat the published month figure as a default and adjust it on evidence. Flow dropping is the clearest signal that the sediment stage is loading up. A returning taste or smell says the carbon is spent. A visible change in the cartridge when it is removed tells you whether you were early or late, which is why it is worth actually looking at the old one rather than letting it go straight into the bin. The micron rating printed on a cartridge tells you what it is designed to catch — the lower the number, the finer the filter and, all else equal, the sooner it loads — but no rating extends the life of a cartridge that is full.
The one interval not to stretch is carbon. A saturated carbon cartridge does not politely stop working; under continued use it can release some of what it previously captured. Late is genuinely worse than nothing here.
Reverse osmosis units have a component the others do not, and it changes the service. The membrane is the fine barrier that does the actual work, it costs more than a cartridge, and it runs on a longer cycle — typically several cartridge changes to one membrane.
Three things protect it and all three are service items. First, the pre-filters: they exist to keep sediment and chlorine off the membrane, and skipping them shortens membrane life sharply. A household that stretches pre-filter changes to save money ends up buying membranes, which is the more expensive part. Second, the waste line: an RO unit sends a proportion of feed water to drain, and that line must actually run to drain freely. A kinked, blocked or badly tied waste line is one of the most common under-sink faults there is, and it presents as poor production or as a unit that runs continuously. Third, the storage tank, where the unit has one: its pressure and its internal cleanliness both matter, and the tank is a place biofilm is happy to live.
A TDS meter is the usual way a technician demonstrates that a membrane is still doing its job — a reading before and after the unit. Treat it as a comparison rather than a verdict: what matters is the difference between feed and product, and the trend across services, not a single number. And note what it cannot tell you: TDS says nothing about microbiological quality, which is why sanitising is a separate step.

The row worth acting on immediately is the damp cabinet. Everything else on this list is water quality; that one is property damage in progress.
Filter housings, tubing and storage tanks are dark, permanently wet and at room temperature, which is an excellent environment for biofilm. It forms slowly and invisibly, and once it is established, every new cartridge you fit is installed into it.
This is why a cartridge swap on its own is not a service. Sanitising means cleaning the housings and, on units with a storage tank, treating the tank, then flushing everything thoroughly before the unit goes back into use. It is not a difficult step; it is simply the one that takes time, and the one an under-priced service visit drops first. Ask directly whether it is included, because the difference between the two visits is invisible on the day and considerable over years.
A unit that has stood unused for a long period — a holiday, a vacant rental, a unit between tenants — needs sanitising and a full flush before it is trusted again, regardless of when its cartridges were last changed. Stagnant water in a purifier is a worse starting point than mains water. The same applies after any supply interruption that let the system drain down.
The most expensive thing a purifier does is leak. It sits inside a cabinet, on a board that is often not designed to get wet, with the leak hidden behind whatever is stored in front of it. A weep at a push-fit connection can run for weeks before anyone opens the cupboard, and by then the base panel has swollen and the carcass edge has started to delaminate. Prevention is mostly discipline at the service visit:

A large share of Malaysian purifiers are on rental or instalment plans that bundle servicing, and the servicing is often the real reason the plan is worth having — or the reason it is not. Establish, in writing:
On an owned unit you carry the schedule yourself, which is cheaper and more flexible but only works if somebody actually tracks it. A note in a calendar with the cartridge model numbers on it is the entire system, and it is the difference between servicing on volume and servicing on memory. Cartridges and membranes themselves are not priced here. They vary by brand, model and stage count far too much for a single range to be honest, and a purifier is one of the categories where a plausible-looking number does real harm. What you can do is control the variables that move the bill:
