The Malay word households use for this — kembang — describes it perfectly: the board expands. Most cabinet carcasses and doors are engineered wood: particleboard, MDF or plywood, all of which are wood fibre held together with adhesive. The decorative face — melamine, laminate, acrylic, veneer — and the tape banded onto the exposed edges are what keep water off that core. They are a skin, not a seal. The moment water finds a gap in that skin, the fibre underneath absorbs it, swells, and cannot shrink back. What you see is a door that has grown a few millimetres and no longer sits flush, a bottom rail that looks bloated, laminate lifting like a blister, or a base panel that has gone soft and crumbly at the corner.
Two things follow from that. First, swelling is permanent — drying a swollen door does not restore it, because the fibres have already ruptured. Second, swelling is a symptom. A cabinet that swells has a water path, and replacing the swollen part without closing that path simply buys you a repeat in a year. That is why every honest repair starts with finding where the water came from, not with pricing a new door.

The sink base is the cabinet that fails first in most Malaysian kitchens, and it fails quietly. It contains the trap, the waste pipe, often a filter and sometimes a water heater feed, and it is usually packed with cleaning bottles and a bin that hide the floor of the cabinet completely. A slow weep at a compression joint can run for months before anyone notices, by which time the base panel has gone soft, the back edge has swelled, and the smell has started.
Three things make the difference between an annoyance and a rebuild. A base panel in moisture-resistant plywood, rigid PVC board or aluminium instead of plain particleboard survives a slow drip long enough for you to find it. A drip tray or a bonded waterproof liner in the sink base catches water instead of letting it soak in. And a habit of actually looking — putting a hand on the base panel behind the bin once a month takes ten seconds. Doors show three distinct failures and they mean different things. A swollen door — usually thickened along the bottom edge — means water has been standing on or wicking up into the door, most often from a wet worktop edge, a splash zone or a damp floor if the door is on a base unit with a low plinth. It cannot be reversed; the door is replaced.
Blistered or lifting laminate on the face means the bond between face and core has let go, generally from heat (beside a hob or above an oven), steam, or water that entered at a failed edge and travelled. If the blister is small, isolated and the core underneath is still hard, a careful re-bond is sometimes possible; if the core is soft, the door is finished. One warning worth stating plainly: a swollen door on a base unit is often the first visible sign of a leak that is also damaging the carcass you cannot see. Open the cabinet and check the panel before you order a replacement door.
A cabinet interior that smells musty, or shows black or grey spotting on the panel and in the corners, has been damp long enough to grow mould. Ventilation matters as much as the repair. A cabinet that is opened daily dries; a sealed cupboard under a sink with a slow drip does not. The sequence that saves money is always the same. Empty the cabinet completely and dry it. Put dry tissue under each plumbing joint and check it after a full day of normal use — a weep that only appears when the tap runs at pressure will not show in a static test. Feel the back panel and the wall behind it: cold and damp with no plumbing in that cabinet points at a wall pipe or a leak from above. If nothing is found and the damp persists, the leak is concealed — in the wall, in the floor screed, or coming from the unit above. The general rule: doors and single panels are replaceable items; a soft carcass is not. Once the box itself has lost integrity, screws no longer hold, hinges pull out, and patching becomes an expensive way of postponing the same job.
Replacing doors on an existing kitchen is straightforward if the carcasses are sound: the doors are measured off the existing openings, the hinge boring pattern is matched, and new doors are made and hung. A kitchen that resists water is specified, not maintained into existence. The four decisions that matter most are all made before the boards are cut. Beyond that: seal the sink cut-out and the tap base properly and re-silicone when it ages, fit a drip tray in the sink base, and keep a gap behind the run rather than pressing cabinets flat against a wall that may sweat. Cabinets fail from small, repeated exposure far more often than from one dramatic flood. Wipe standing water off the countertop edge rather than letting it run down the door face. Dry the sink base after a big wash-up. Do not store wet cloths or a damp mop inside a cupboard. Open the sink cabinet occasionally to let it breathe. Run the hood while cooking so steam leaves the room instead of condensing on the wall cabinets above the hob.
