What a built-in study desk costs, how deep and high it should be, and where drawers, shelves and sockets go.

A built-in study desk is quoted like the rest of the carpentry: per foot run of the desk and the storage built with it. ClickBina's carpentry list puts a custom study desk and shelving unit at RM2,000 – RM5,000, with melamine built-ins at RM180 – RM350 per ft run (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). Size decides comfort more than finish: the European office-desk standard EN 527-1 sets a seated working height of 740 ± 20 mm, and a drawer pedestal under a short desk can leave too little knee room. Settle the height, depth and sockets before the board is cut.
These are ClickBina's published ranges for the pieces a study desk is made of (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). Most quotes are a desk top on one or two drawer pedestals, plus shelves or a cabinet above:
| Item | Indicative price | Source guide |
|---|---|---|
| Custom study desk and shelving unit | RM2,000 – RM5,000 | Kids' wardrobe guide |
| Built-in carpentry in melamine, per foot run | RM180 – RM350 | Kids' wardrobe and dressing table guides |
| Moisture-resistant (MR) plywood, per foot run | RM350 – RM550 | Dressing table guide |
| Premium laminate on MR plywood, per foot run | RM500 – RM800 | Dressing table guide |
| Cabinet run with laminate doors, per foot run | RM280 – RM420 | Floating shelves guide |

💬 WhatsApp for a quoteA desk on its own is a short piece of carpentry; what moves the total is the storage around it. A plain top between two walls with one pedestal sits at the low end. A full-height wall with a desk, open shelves, closed cabinets, lighting and cable management sits at the top, and a long wall can go past it.
Built-ins in Malaysia are priced per foot run: the length of the wall the carpentry covers, at a rate set by the board and the door finish. A study desk follows the same logic as a wardrobe, which is why ClickBina's dressing table guide quotes the run it sits in at about RM180 – RM350 for melamine and RM350 – RM550 for moisture-resistant plywood.
Four things decide where a desk lands in the range:
A quotation should list each of those on its own line, with the board, the door finish, the edge banding and the hardware named, so two quotes can be compared fairly.
Malaysia has no standard for home study desks, so carpenters borrow one. ClickBina's dressing table guide sets out the two documents worth borrowing from, and both are analogies, not rules with force here:
| Measure | Borrowed figure | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Seated working height, fixed desk | 740 ± 20 mm | EN 527-1, European office desks |
| Limited-adjustable desk | 680 mm minimum to 760 mm maximum | EN 527-1 |
| Accessible work surface height | 710 mm minimum to 865 mm maximum | ADA 2010 Standards, US |
For most adults a fixed top at around that seated height is comfortable. For a child's desk the honest answer is that a fixed height will be wrong for some of the years, so plan for an adjustable chair and a footrest rather than building the top low. ClickBina's kids' wardrobe guide covers the same grow-with-me problem for storage.
Depth is where built-in desks usually go wrong, because the carpenter matches the depth of the cabinets around it. A desk needs more than a shelf. ClickBina's furniture clearance guide allows at least 600 mm depth at the desk and 900 mm clearance behind the chair, so the chair can roll back and someone can pass.
The office standard asks for more, because it is written for eight hours a day. EN 527-1 sets a top depth of 800 mm for office desks, with 600 mm acceptable only in limited situations, a legroom width of 850 mm for a fixed-height desk, and a foot clearance height of 120 mm minimum. A home desk used for an evening of homework can be shallower than an office desk, but a desk for a full working day with a monitor should be closer to the office figures.
The most common brief is a 4-foot desk with a drawer pedestal on one side. ClickBina's dressing table guide works through the same layout: a 4-foot unit is 1,219 mm wide; put a conventional 450 mm drawer pedestal under one side and you are left with 769 mm of clear knee width, which is 81 mm short of the 850 mm minimum legroom width EN 527-1 sets for a fixed-height office desk.
For a dressing table used for ten minutes, that is acceptable. For a desk used for hours, it is not. Three ways to fix it:
Draw the knee space on the plan with its width written in, and check it against the chair you will use.
Most of the storage in a study wall sits above the desk. Open shelves are cheaper and easier to reach; cabinets with doors hide clutter and keep dust off books. ClickBina's floating shelves and bookcase guide covers spans, loads and fixings, and prices a cabinet run with laminate doors at RM280 – RM420 per ft run.
Keep the underside of any wall cabinet high enough that you do not hit your head when you stand up, and light the desk from above or the front, not from behind you. An LED strip under the shelf or cabinet is the simplest task light; ClickBina's cabinet LED lighting guide lists LED strip at RM50 – RM120 per metre installed.
A study desk needs more sockets than people plan for: a laptop, a monitor, a lamp, a phone charger and often a printer. Put the sockets just above the desk top where you can reach them, not behind the pedestal on the floor. Ask for a cable grommet in the top and a cable tray or a back panel gap behind the desk, so the wires drop out of sight.
Agree the socket positions before the carpentry is drawn, because the back panel is cut around them. ClickBina's cabinet LED lighting guide lists a concealed (chased-in) socket at RM200 – RM400, and the kids' bedroom guide lists an extra socket on surface trunking near the DB at RM120 – RM250. The power points guide explains when each one makes sense.
A desk top takes more wear than a cabinet door: elbows, mugs, a laptop dragged across it every day. The board and finish should match that.
| Option | Rate from ClickBina guides | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Melamine on particleboard or MDF | RM180 – RM350 per ft run | Bedrooms, budget builds, dry rooms |
| MR plywood carcass | RM350 – RM550 per ft run | Humid rooms, heavier use |
| Premium laminate on MR plywood | RM500 – RM800 per ft run | A hard-wearing top, a showpiece finish |
Two details matter more than the board: a properly bonded edge band on the front edge, where your forearms rest, and a low-formaldehyde board in a child's room. ClickBina's board formaldehyde guide explains the E0, E1 and ENF grades to ask for.

How we estimated prices: every RM figure on this page is quoted unchanged from the ClickBina guides named above (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026). The desk dimensions are borrowed analogies from office and accessibility standards, not Malaysian rules for home desks.
