Aluminium Wardrobe
vs Wood: Termites, Damp & Cost (2026)

When a metal wardrobe is the right answer for a problem wall, and when plywood is enough.

An aluminium wardrobe makes sense on a wall with a termite history or persistent damp, because an aluminium frame with non-timber panels has nothing for termites to eat and nothing for water to swell. It dents more easily, feels colder and costs more than melamine, so in a dry condo bedroom a moisture-resistant plywood wardrobe with an air gap is usually enough. ClickBina's guides price MR plywood wardrobes at RM350 – RM550 per ft run and full aluminium cabinetry at RM400 – RM700 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); a site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

What an aluminium wardrobe actually is

In the Malaysian market an aluminium cabinet usually means a full aluminium system: an extruded aluminium frame for the carcass and the door stiles, with infill panels of aluminium composite, aluminium honeycomb, glass or a coated board, assembled with screws and brackets rather than glue and dowels. It is common in wet kitchens and yards, and the same construction can be used for a bedroom wardrobe. It is not the same thing as a loose steel “locker” wardrobe from a furniture shop, which is standalone furniture rather than a built-in.

The point of the system is that there is no cellulose in the structure. ClickBina's cabinet guides put it simply: nothing for water to swell, nothing for fungus to colonise and nothing for termites to eat. Whether that is worth paying for depends on the wall the wardrobe will stand against.

Termites and built-in wardrobes

Termites are the main reason people ask for aluminium. ClickBina's termite damage repair guide explains why wardrobes are at risk: built-in wardrobes and kitchen cabinets are fixed against walls and often sit on the floor, so termites reach them unseen, and the back panel and base go first. A single damaged panel can be replaced; a carcass that is eaten through is usually rebuilt.

A new wardrobe of any material does not solve an active infestation. Treat the house first, then rebuild. The same guide lists corrective soil treatment for an existing home at RM1,500 – RM4,000, and ClickBina's termite control guide explains the treatment options. An aluminium wardrobe is then a way of making sure the next attack has nothing to eat on that wall.

Damp walls, condensation and mould

The second reason is damp. A wardrobe on an external wall, or on the wall of an en-suite bathroom, sits against a surface that can be cool or wet. ClickBina's mouldy wardrobe guide separates condensation (even dampness that is worse at night with the aircon on) from rain seepage (a patch that grows after heavy rain), and fixes the source before the carpentry.

Aluminium does not swell or feed mould, but clothes inside it still can, so an aluminium wardrobe on a damp wall still needs an air gap behind it and some ventilation. If water is coming through the wall, seal the wall first; no wardrobe material fixes a leak.

The downsides nobody mentions

Aluminium is not a free upgrade. The same cabinet guides list its weak points honestly:

  • It dents. Thin composite infill panels take a knock permanently, and unlike a laminate face a dent cannot be sanded or filled; the panel is replaced.
  • It conducts heat. A panel in direct sun feels warm, and a wardrobe on a west wall will feel it.
  • Coating quality varies widely. A cheap powder coat or a poor wood-grain transfer can fade or chalk.
  • The look. A frame-and-panel front reads as a system, not joinery; wood-grain coatings narrow the gap.

Loose steel wardrobes have their own limits: fixed sizes, thin sheet that dents, and a look that suits a store room or staff quarters better than a master bedroom.

Aluminium vs board vs solid timber

A built-in wardrobe is priced per foot run by material. ClickBina has no separate aluminium wardrobe rate, so the aluminium row below is the published aluminium cabinetry rate from the laundry and yard cabinet guide:

Board and timber rates are from ClickBina's wardrobe door types guide. Note the overlap: the top of the moisture-resistant plywood band and the bottom of the aluminium band are close, so on a problem wall the extra cost of aluminium is smaller than it first looks. All figures are indicative 2026 Klang Valley ranges.

Panels, doors and finishes

What you see is the infill panel and the coating, so specify both. Aluminium composite panels are light and cheap; honeycomb panels are stiffer and resist dents much better; glass panels suit a walk-in; a coated board panel looks most like ordinary joinery but brings back some of the timber weakness. Wood-grain powder coatings let the frame read as timber from a distance, and the better ones are what separate the top of the price band from the bottom.

Aluminium compositeLight, low costDents permanently
Aluminium honeycombStiff, resists knocksCosts more
GlassWalk-in and display lookMust be tempered; shows dust
Coated boardLooks most like joineryBrings back timber weakness

Frame names such as 3G and 4G describe how the frame wraps the panel; they are market labels rather than standards, so write the actual profile, panel type and coating on the quote.

Hinges, runners and fittings

Doors on an aluminium frame use hinges and sliding gear just as board doors do, and the same rule applies: makers express hinge capacity as a hinge count against door weight and height, so heavier or taller doors need more hinges. Soft-close dampers stop metal-framed doors closing with a clang. Inside, the usual rails, drawers, pull-down rails and baskets all work; ClickBina's wardrobe internal fittings guide covers how to plan them.

The sensible middle: MR plywood, an air gap and a raised base

For many bedrooms the right answer is not aluminium but a better timber-based wardrobe. The termite damage guide notes that when rebuilding, many owners move from standard board to moisture-resistant plywood, which also holds up better against damp walls. Add an air gap behind the back panel, sealed edge banding, and a base lifted off the floor, and a plywood wardrobe copes with most condo bedrooms. ClickBina's built-in wardrobe guide is clear, though, that moisture-resistant plywood is not termite-proof, which is why a landed ground floor with a termite history is where aluminium earns its price.

When aluminium is worth it, and when it is not

  • Worth it: a landed ground-floor bedroom with past termite damage; a wall shared with a wet bathroom; a store room or utility room that is humid and rarely aired.
  • Probably not: an upper-floor condo bedroom with a dry internal wall and aircon; a master bedroom where the wardrobe is the main piece of joinery and the look matters most.
  • Either way: fix the termites or the damp first, and keep an air gap behind the wardrobe.

What to write on the quote

  • Frame material and profile, infill panel type (composite, honeycomb, glass or coated board) and thickness.
  • Coating type and colour, and whether a wood-grain finish is used.
  • Door type and hinge count per leaf, or the sliding system and its rated door weight.
  • Internal fittings: rails, shelves, drawers and baskets.
  • Base detail and the gap left behind the wardrobe.
  • Whether termite treatment or a wall repair is needed first, and who does it.

Common Questions

Are aluminium wardrobes termite-proof?
An aluminium frame with non-timber panels has nothing for termites to eat. A coated-board panel reintroduces timber, so ask what the panels are made of. Treat any active infestation first.
How much is an aluminium wardrobe in Malaysia?
No separate wardrobe rate is published. ClickBina's yard cabinet guide prices full aluminium cabinetry at RM400 – RM700 per ft run, against RM350 – RM550 for a moisture-resistant plywood wardrobe (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Is aluminium better than plywood for a wardrobe?
On a wall with termites or persistent damp, usually yes. In a dry condo bedroom, MR plywood with an air gap is usually enough and looks more like joinery.
Do aluminium wardrobes dent?
Thin composite panels dent permanently. Honeycomb panels resist knocks much better.
Will clothes still get mouldy in an aluminium wardrobe?
They can, if the room is humid. Leave an air gap behind the wardrobe, ventilate and fix any wall seepage first.
Is a steel wardrobe the same as an aluminium wardrobe?
No. Loose steel wardrobes are standalone furniture in fixed sizes; an aluminium wardrobe is usually a built-in frame-and-panel system made to the wall.
Can an aluminium wardrobe look like wood?
Yes, with a wood-grain powder coating. Quality varies, so ask to see a sample and write the coating on the quote.
