A chip on the sink edge, a crack from the hob or a stain that will not lift? Here is what can be repaired, what cannot, and when replacing makes more sense.

Small chips on the edge of a quartz or granite top can usually be filled with a colour-matched resin and polished so they are hard to spot; surface stains on granite often lift with the right poultice, and solid surface can be sanded and invisibly patched. Cracks are different: first find out why the top cracked, because an unsupported overhang, a sharp cut-out corner or a sagging cabinet will crack a repair or a new top the same way. Scorch marks on quartz resin are permanent. When a repair is not realistic, replacement on ClickBina's quartz price guide runs RM250 – RM600 per foot run for quartz (market estimate 2026, Klang Valley).
Countertop damage falls into a few groups, and each one has a different answer. Before you call anyone, work out which one you are looking at and what the top is made of. A quartz top with a chip on the sink edge is a quick repair; a granite top with a crack running out from the hob cut-out is a question about the cabinet underneath; a solid surface top with a burn mark can often be sanded out.
| Damage | What it usually is | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Edge chip | A knock from a pot or a tap on a sharp edge | Colour-matched resin fill, then polish |
| Hairline crack from a cut-out | Stress at a sink or hob corner, often from a sagging carcass | Fix the support first, then fill or replace |
| Crack across the top | Unsupported span, impact, or movement below | Assess support; section replacement is common |
| Stain | Oil, turmeric, wine or rust soaking in (natural stone) or sitting on the surface | Clean or poultice; granite may need resealing |
| Scorch or heat mark | Hot pot or induction ring heating the resin | Permanent on quartz; sand out on solid surface |
| Dull or etched patch | Harsh cleaners or acids on the finish | Re-polish or accept; prevent with mild cleaners |
Quartz (engineered stone) is crushed stone bound with resin. ClickBina's quartz guide notes it needs no sealing and that a hot pot base or a portable induction ring left running can scorch the resin permanently, while strong alkaline or bleach-based cleaners dull the finish over time. Chips fill well; burns do not come out.
Granite is natural stone and slightly porous, which is why it needs sealing and why oil and spice stains can soak in. It is hard and resists heat, and chips can be filled. ClickBina's granite and marble fabrication guide covers the material in more depth.
Solid surface is an acrylic-based composite. It scratches and burns more easily, but it is the most repairable: scratches and marks can be sanded out and damaged sections cut out and patched with near-invisible joins.
Sintered stone is fired without a resin binder, so it does not scorch, but its thin slabs can chip on edges and are hard to repair invisibly; see the sintered stone guide.
Edge chips are the most common damage, usually on the sink edge or the corner by the hob where pots swing past. A stone repairer cleans the chip, fills it with a resin tinted to match, lets it cure, then cuts it flush and polishes it. On plain or speckled quartz the result is often hard to find; on a strong vein or a very dark polished top you may still see it in raking light.
Keep the broken piece if you have it. A clean break can sometimes be bonded back in place, which blends better than any fill.
ClickBina's quartz guide is clear that cracks almost never come from cooking. They come from unsupported spans — a long overhang without brackets, a cut-out corner without a radius — or from a carcass that has sagged because water got into it. A swollen carcass drops a corner, the stone takes the strain, and a hairline runs out from the sink cut-out.
That is why a crack repair starts underneath. If the cabinet has swollen or sagged, or the overhang has no support, a filled crack will reopen and a new top will crack in the same place. Look for water damage under the sink, check whether the top rocks when pressed, and make sure the support is fixed first. ClickBina's cabinet material guide explains what should be under a stone top.
| Situation | Usual answer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small edge chip | Repair in place | Quick, low-cost, usually discreet |
| Hairline crack, support fixed, top otherwise sound | Repair in place | Stops dirt and water getting in |
| Crack with a sagging or swollen cabinet | Fix the cabinet, then repair or replace the section | Otherwise it cracks again |
| Large scorch on quartz | Replace the section or accept it | The resin cannot be restored |
| Several cracks or a broken section | Replace the section or the top | Repairs would be visible and weak |
| Renovating anyway | New top | Matching old stone is often impossible |
Matching is the hidden problem with section replacement: slabs change between batches, and a discontinued colour may simply not be available. Ask the fabricator to show you the new slab next to the old top before they cut it.
Chip and crack repairs are priced after seeing the damage, the material and the access. If a repair is not realistic, these are the replacement bands on ClickBina's quartz price guide (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley):
| Countertop material | Supplied and installed | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz (engineered stone) | RM250 – RM600 per ft run | Most kitchens |
| Granite | RM200 – RM500 per ft run | Needs sealing |
| Solid surface | RM150 – RM350 per ft run | Seamless, repairable |
| Sintered stone | RM400 – RM900 per ft run | Heat-proof |

DIY kits for stone chips exist, and for a tiny chip on a speckled top they can be good enough. Clean and dry the chip, match the colour carefully, overfill slightly and cut back once cured. For cracks, dark polished tops or anything near the sink edge where water sits, a professional repair is usually worth it. Do not try to glue a crack in a top that is still moving; fix the support first.
