Every showroom asks whether you want 3G, 4G or 5G — and none of them is an official standard. Here is what each construction actually is, what it costs, and the specification that decides whether your doors still line up in five years.

Walk into any kitchen showroom in the Klang Valley and you will be asked whether you want 3G, 4G or 5G doors, in a tone that implies these are recognised grades with published specifications. They are not. There is no Malaysian or international standard behind them; they are trade shorthand that grew up in the local aluminium-and-glass cabinet market to describe three different ways of building the same basic thing — a sheet of glass or panel held in an aluminium frame. The “G” is generally taken to stand for generation, and the numbers describe how visible the aluminium is and how the door edge is finished.
That matters because it means the terms are not enforceable on their own. Two suppliers can both quote “4G doors” and deliver noticeably different products, because there is nothing defining the profile width, the glass thickness, the coating, or the hardware. What follows is what each term is generally understood to mean in this market, and — more usefully — the specifications you should be asking about instead, because those are the ones you can actually write into a quotation and hold someone to. A 3G door is the original and most recognisable of the three: a glass or composite panel sitting inside an aluminium frame whose profile is visible on the face of the door. You see a metal border, usually a few centimetres wide, running around each door, and the frame typically carries a handle or a lip. It is the most economical of the three constructions, it is structurally the most forgiving because the frame does the work, and it is by far the easiest to repair — a cracked panel can generally be swapped out of the frame without replacing the whole door.
Its drawback is visual. The exposed frame lines break a run of cabinetry into rectangles, which reads as busier and more dated than a flush face, particularly across a long wall of uppers. It also creates a physical ledge on the door face where dust and cooking grease collect, and a corner join in the frame profile that needs wiping. 4G is the construction that took over the mid-market. The aluminium frame is still there but slimmer, and it wraps to the edge and back of the panel rather than sitting on the face, so the glass finishes flush with the door face and from the front you see an almost uninterrupted surface with only a thin line of frame at the edge. Most 4G systems pair this with a handleless design — the frame profile itself forms a J-groove or a finger pull along the top or side edge, or the door is set up for push-to-open hardware.
The result is a flat, continuous face that suits current Malaysian tastes, hides the frame, and removes the dust ledge that 3G creates. What you pay for that is repairability and weight distribution: because the panel is bonded into a wrapping profile, a damaged panel is more likely to mean a whole new door, and the door assembly is heavier and more dependent on its hinges. The finger-pull groove also needs its own cleaning routine — grease finds recessed pulls quickly in a kitchen that fries, and a groove that is never wiped becomes the grubbiest part of an otherwise pristine kitchen.
5G is the premium end, and it is the frame you never see. The glass covers the entire face of the door and wraps around its edges, with the aluminium frame concealed behind it, so the door reads as a single sheet of glass with no metal showing at all — the frameless look associated with European display cabinetry and glazed tall units. Everything about a 5G door is more demanding. There is no frame line to hide behind, so machining tolerances, the glass edges and the bonding all have to be right, and poor fabrication shows immediately as an uneven gap or a door that will not sit flush with its neighbour. A full sheet of glass across the face and around the edges also makes it the heaviest of the three constructions, which raises the hinge specification. The frame gets all the attention; the glass is what you actually touch. Three specifications are worth asking about. Tempering: toughened glass is heat-treated so that, if it does break, it is designed to fragment into small blunt granules rather than long shards — which is why it is the normal specification for cabinet doors at head height. Ask your supplier to confirm the panels are tempered and to show you the corner stamp; do not take it as read.
Second, the finish. Most coloured cabinet glass is lacquered or back-painted — the colour is applied to the rear face, so the front stays glass-smooth and the colour is protected. Frosted and acid-etched glass diffuses what is behind it, which is genuinely useful on a tall unit where you do not want every packet on display; be aware that some frosted finishes show finger marks more than clear glass, not less. Third, thickness: a thicker pane is stiffer and quieter but heavier, which loops straight back to hinges. Get the thickness written on the quotation, because it is the specification most quietly value-engineered.
The single most useful thing to understand about glass cabinet doors is that the grade name tells you nothing about the thing that fails. Door weight does. A standard cabinet hinge is designed around a fairly light door; a large glass panel in an aluminium frame is noticeably heavier than a melamine door of the same size, and on a tall or wide door that extra weight arrives with extra leverage as well. Fit the same hinge count to that door and it will be running permanently at or beyond its rating — and hinges that live beyond their rating do not usually snap, they creep. Almost every “my 4G doors are crooked” complaint traces to one of four causes, and only one of them is the door itself. The commonest is under-specified or worn hinges, as above. The third is installation: cabinets that are not level and plumb transfer their error straight into the door reveals, and a run that looks fine with the doors off can look drunk with them on. The fourth is simply time and adjustment — European-style hinges have three-way adjustment screws precisely because doors are expected to be tweaked, and a kitchen that has never been adjusted in five years is overdue. If your doors have dropped, get the hinge rating checked first and the carcass fixings second; replacing doors on a sound frame is rarely the right first move.
Glass shows everything, and a Malaysian kitchen produces airborne grease that plain window cleaner does not fully remove — it smears it. The routine that works is a mild degreaser first on greasy areas, then a glass cleaner, then a dry microfibre pass; and doing the uppers near the hob more often than the rest. The details differ by construction. On 3G, the face ledge and the frame corners are the collectors. On 4G, the handleless groove is: it is at exactly the height where greasy fingers land, and it is easy to miss because it is not on a visible face. On 5G, there is no frame to trap anything, but an unbroken glass face shows every fingerprint and smear that lands on it. None of this is a reason to avoid glass — it is a reason to pick the construction whose cleaning burden you will actually keep up with, and to keep the extractor running so less grease reaches the doors in the first place.

Those two rows bracket the conversation. Glass belongs where it is seen and stays relatively clean: the dry kitchen, a display run of uppers, a glazed tall unit, a bar or coffee corner. It gives depth to a narrow condo kitchen, and it stops a full-height run of cabinetry reading as a solid wall. Frosted or reeded glass is the compromise when you want the lightness without displaying every tin.
It belongs less in the wet kitchen, where oil aerosol from a wok settles on every surface within a couple of metres of the burner and glass makes that film obvious within days. Second: if a panel cracks in year three, what exactly gets replaced — the panel or the door? The answers tell you far more about what you are buying than the generation number does.
