What a TV cabinet really costs per foot run in KL and Selangor — and the question no showroom asks first: whether your wall can hold a floating one.

A custom TV cabinet is carpentry, so it is priced the way all carpentry is priced in Malaysia: per foot run — the horizontal length of the unit measured along the wall, in feet. Depth and height are assumed by the drawing rather than charged separately. The 2026 Klang Valley band for a floating or low console is RM280 – RM600 per foot run (market estimate 2026, indicative Klang Valley), which puts a typical 6 to 8 foot console at RM1,800 – RM4,800.
This is dry-zone carpentry, so it sits on the same scale as a bedroom wardrobe rather than a wet-kitchen cabinet — and the rate moves with the door finish and the carcass board, not with the colour. What it does not include is the wall behind it. If the drawing shows cladding, a recess, a false wall or a floor-to-ceiling composition, you are buying a feature wall with a cabinet in it, and the budget conversation changes completely.
Three things get called “a TV cabinet” and they are three different jobs:

It looks lighter, the floor sweeps clean underneath, and it is the design most people mean when they search for a modern TV cabinet. It is also the one that fails when the wall was never checked — see the next section, because on a hollow-block or plasterboard condo partition this is a real constraint, not a caution.
Low console (floor-standing). The same box on a plinth or on legs. It costs the same per foot, it carries its own weight to the floor, and it will go anywhere. If the wall is doubtful and the design allows it, this is the cheap answer to a hard problem.
Full-height. Floor-to-ceiling joinery with a TV recess, open shelving and closed storage, usually with the wall clad behind it. It is quoted as a wall, not as a console, and it belongs to the feature-wall budget.
Here is the honest position, and it is not what most TV-cabinet pages tell you. Nobody publishes a load rating for a fabricated TV console, because there is nothing standard about it — board thickness, length, back-panel construction and the number of fixings all change with the drawing. What is published, by the anchor manufacturers, is how much a single fixing may be loaded in a given wall. So a floating console's real limit is set by the wall, and it is knowable before anything is built.
fischer publishes recommended loads for its DuoPower anchor per base material, and the spread across the wall types found in Malaysian homes is the whole argument:

Read that table carefully before anyone drills. The figures are per single anchor, they are specific to that fischer product, and each range spans the anchor sizes from 5×25 to 14×70 — they are not a generic “a wall plug holds this much”. The manufacturer publishes kilonewtons only; converted at roughly 102 kilograms-force per kilonewton, the concrete row is about 41 to 540 kg per anchor and the plasterboard row about 12 to 15 kg. That conversion is ours, not fischer's, so keep it the way round that leaves the source visible: fischer publishes 5.30 kN, which is about 540 kg — never “fischer says 540 kg”.
Two conditions travel with those numbers and both matter in a Malaysian home. fischer’s ‘recommended load’ already includes the required safety factors, and is valid for dry base material at substrate temperatures up to +24 °C (short term +40 °C). It applies to tensile, shear and oblique load at any angle. A dedicated plasterboard anchor does not rescue the situation either: fischer rates its GK plasterboard fixing at a maximum load of 8 kg in 12.5 mm gypsum plasterboard and 7 kg in 9.5 mm. The maker’s own application list for that fixing is pictures, lighting, electrical installations and fitting accessories — light items, not joinery.
The TV mount above the cabinet runs into the same wall, and the mount brands say so themselves. Vogel’s is explicit in its installation manual: A TV wall mount’s supplied fixings are intended for solid brick, solid concrete or solid wood columns only; hollow brick, wood panel or plasterboard walls require specialist advice. That is a manufacturer stating in writing that a hollow-brick or plasterboard wall sits outside the supplied fixings’ scope.
What to do with this. Before the drawing is signed, tap the wall and ask what it is. If it is a lightweight block or a dry partition, the three workable answers are: build the console floor-standing instead; fix through the partition into the structure behind it, with the fixing schedule stated on the quote; or have the carpenter install a continuous plywood or steel backing rail anchored into structure and hang the carcass off that. Ask your carpenter to state, on the quote, what the cabinet is fixed with and into what. A carpenter who will not put that in writing is guessing.

The console height, the TV height and the sofa position are one problem, and there are two real standards-body documents on it — plus one very widely repeated mistake about what they say.
First, the correction. SMPTE’s ‘30 degrees’ is the maximum off-axis seat position, not the angle the screen subtends in the viewer’s field of view. The angle at which a picture is seen is a different quantity altogether, and it belongs to ITU-R. Both numbers appear below; do not let them merge.
ITU-R BT.500-15 sets the optimal viewing distance in picture heights — the height of the displayed image, not the diagonal — and it changes with resolution, because the optimal viewing distance is defined as the distance at which two adjacent pixels subtend an angle of one arc-minute at the viewer’s eye.

Read that as a range rather than a point. Where resolution itself is not being judged, any distance in 1.6–3.2 picture heights (4K) or 0.8–3.2 picture heights (8K) may be used. In other words there is no single correct sofa position, and a 4K television tolerates a much closer one than the old rules of thumb assumed.
SMPTE ST 2080-3:2017 approaches it from the other end. SMPTE’s reference viewing distance is 3 to 3.2 picture heights. That standard’s scope is a professional picture-quality evaluation room rather than living-room comfort, so treat it as a reference point and not an instruction. Its own worked example is the single most usable figure either document contains: a 60 in diagonal 16:9 screen (1.33 m wide, 0.75 m high) gives an optimal viewing distance of 2.25 m to 2.4 m.
How to use this without any arithmetic. Measure the height of the picture on your actual television with a tape measure — the lit area, not the bezel and not the diagonal. Multiply by the picture-height figure for your resolution. Compare it with the distance from the wall to where the sofa really sits. If the sofa is much further away than the range allows, more screen will help you more than a more expensive console will, and the cabinet drawing should be settled around that.
A living room is a dry zone with strong afternoon light and, in most Malaysian homes, a fan or an air-conditioner running most evenings. That is a much kinder environment than a kitchen, which is why materials that would be a mistake at a sink are entirely defensible here.

Two Malaysian specifics. On a ground floor, ask about termite treatment before choosing a timber front — a living room against an external wall is not immune. And if the console sits under a window that takes the afternoon sun, expect any timber or dark spray finish to move in tone; a lighter laminate hides it. Those lines are alternatives, not a running total — you buy one hinge tier, not both. A restrained build (the console plus generic soft-close hinges, standard runners) comes to about RM2,288 – RM4,928. The same console with European soft-close hardware and two metal-box drawer systems comes to about RM2,700 – RM5,936.
Note what the upper figure does: it runs past the RM1,800 – RM4,800 whole-job band above, because that band assumes ordinary hardware. Stacking premium hardware onto a long console is exactly how a “simple TV cabinet” quote arrives higher than expected — and it is a legitimate spend, not a padded one, provided it is itemised. The hardware assumption behind those per-foot upgrade figures is stated plainly: hardware tier adds the per-hinge upgrade cost over a standard hinge, assuming about 1.3 hinges per foot run (one 18-inch door on two hinges).
Not in the table, and belonging on the quote as their own lines: the wall fixing method, any backing rail or blocking, electrical points, the TV mount, and anything happening to the wall itself.
These two searches lead to the same showroom and to two different budgets. The distinction that matters is whether the wall is part of the job.

A useful test: if you removed the television, would the wall still be a designed thing? If yes, you want a TV feature wall and should budget on that page. If the answer is “it would just be a wall with a cabinet against it”, this page is your budget. Where to spend, in order. Drawer runners first. The drawers in a TV console are opened daily, they are usually wide and shallow, and a wide shallow drawer on cheap roller runners racks and sticks within a year. A ball-bearing runner is the minimum; a metal-box drawer system is the upgrade you will notice every day. Flap and lift-up mechanisms second — if the equipment compartment has a flap door, the mechanism is doing real work and a cheap one sags.
Hinges third, and buy them by count rather than by rating. That is not a preference, it is forced by what the makers publish: There is no published kg-per-hinge rating for a standard cup hinge. Blum, Häfele and Hettich all express capacity as hinge count versus door weight and height. So a cabinet quote promising “cup hinges rated to X kilograms” is citing a figure no cup-hinge maker publishes. (Kilogram ratings do exist for full-height door hinges, which are different hardware — do not let one be quoted as the other.) The makers also disagree with one another. Makers agree only roughly, within about 2×, and Blum is the most permissive: at 2 hinges Blum says 4–6 kg where Häfele says 2–4 kg; at 3 hinges Blum says 6–12 kg where Häfele says 4–6 kg. All three anchor to a 600 mm door width and all say height and narrowness push the count up. Door height also drives the count: a tall narrow door may warrant three hinges even at 6 kg. Space hinges as far apart as possible. Take the conservative end of that spread on a heavy door and add a hinge rather than argue about it — and note that the Häfele chart is published on a page headed “95° mini hinges”, so its applicability to full-size 110° hinges is unconfirmed and its bands are the more cautious of the two.

A custom console is manufactured, not bought, so the calendar runs: site measure with a laser, then a drawing and a written quote; on acceptance a deposit — the market norm quoted across the Malaysian trade is around 50%, which you should confirm in writing with milestones before paying anything; then factory fabrication, commonly quoted at two to four weeks in the trade; then delivery and installation, usually a day for a console.
Two things extend that, and both are avoidable. Electrical points that were not agreed before fabrication mean either a second visit or a compromise you can see. And a wall that turns out to be lightweight block on installation day stops the job dead, because the fixing has to be redesigned. Settle the fixing method and the socket positions on the drawing.
