Wardrobe Internal Fittings
Rails, Pull-Down Rails, Drawers & Racks

Getting a new wardrobe built? Here is how to plan the inside: which fittings go where, which are worth paying for, and how to keep the clothes fresh in Malaysian humidity.

Open wardrobe with double hanging rails, a pull-down rail, shelves, a trouser rack and drawers

A wardrobe’s inside is built from a few standard fittings: hanging rails (long and double hang), a pull-down rail for the high section, shelves, drawers on runners, and accessories such as trouser racks, tie and belt racks, pull-out baskets and jewellery trays. Plan it by counting what you hang and what you fold, then give the most-used items the space between waist and shoulder height. Spend on the moving parts: our guides put ball-bearing drawer runners at RM25 – RM60 per pair and branded soft-close hinges at RM18 – RM40 per hinge. In a Malaysian bedroom, leave room for air to move, or the best layout still smells musty.

Plan the inside before the doors

Most wardrobe regrets are about the inside, not the colour of the doors: not enough hanging space, drawers where shelves would do, and a top section nobody can reach. Before anyone draws the wardrobe, count what goes in it: how many long items (dresses, baju kurung, coats), how many short hanging items (shirts, blouses, folded trousers on hangers), how much is folded, and how many shoes, bags and accessories.

In Malaysia most working clothes are hung rather than folded, so many households need more hanging rail and fewer drawers than a showroom layout suggests. Put what you wear every week between waist and shoulder height, and send seasonal items, luggage and spare bedding to the top.

The zones of a wardrobe

ZoneFittingWhat goes there
Long hangSingle high railDresses, baju kurung, coats, long skirts
Double hangTwo rails, one above the otherShirts, blouses, jackets, trousers folded over hangers
ShelvesAdjustable shelvesFolded T-shirts, jumpers, jeans, towels
DrawersDrawers on runners, sometimes with dividersUnderwear, socks, accessories, small items
AccessoriesTrouser, tie and belt racks; pull-out baskets; traysTrousers, ties, belts, jewellery, watches

Double hang is the most space-efficient zone for most people: two rows of shirts in the height of one long dress. Keep one long-hang bay, not three.

Hanging rails: shape, support and direction

An oval rail is stiffer than a thin round rod of the same weight and lets hangers slide easily. Whatever the rail, the fixings carry the load. Our wardrobe repair guide notes that a hanging rail pulled out of the side panel is the same problem as a torn-out hinge, and that a long rail carrying heavy coats may need a centre support. Ask for one on any long bay.

Depth decides the direction. Our wardrobe door guide explains that a forward-facing rail lets a 40 cm deep frame hang clothes at all, whereas the conventional side-to-side rail is sold only for the 58 cm frame. A forward-facing rail turns a shallow alcove into usable hanging space, at the cost of seeing one garment face-on instead of a row of shoulders.

Pull-down rails for the high section

Full-height wardrobes are common in Malaysian condos because every bit of wall counts, but the top section is out of reach. A pull-down rail, sometimes called a wardrobe lift, is a hanging rail on a hinged arm: you pull a handle, the rail swings down and forward to a reachable height, and it returns up when released. It turns the top of a tall wardrobe into everyday hanging space.

Pull-down rails are rated for a maximum load and fit a range of cabinet widths, so the bay has to be designed around the mechanism. They suit lighter items such as shirts; heavy coats and long dresses belong on a fixed rail lower down.

Drawers and runners

Drawers are the most expensive zone per foot, so use them for small things that genuinely need them. The quality is in the runners. Side-mounted ball-bearing runners are the sturdy standard; soft-close and full-extension versions stop drawers slamming and let you reach the back. Metal drawer box systems cost more again but run smoother and carry more. Inside the drawer, dividers and velvet trays keep socks, ties and jewellery from turning into one pile.

Put drawers at waist height where you can see into them, and keep them clear of the door swing: a drawer that hits a half-open hinged door is a daily irritation.

Trouser racks, tie racks and pull-out baskets

  • Trouser racks: pull-out frames that hang trousers by the leg, keeping creases sharp without taking a hanging rail.
  • Tie and belt racks: slim pull-outs fixed to a side panel; useful where there is a narrow gap left in the layout.
  • Pull-out baskets: wire or fabric baskets on runners for folded knitwear, sportswear or laundry; they let air through, which helps in humid rooms.
  • Jewellery and watch trays: shallow drawers with fitted inserts; lockable versions exist for valuables.
  • Shoe racks: angled or pull-out racks at the base; ventilated fronts stop shoe smells spreading into the clothes.

Every pull-out needs its own depth and clearance, so choose the accessories at design stage. Adding them later often means the door, a hinge or a handle is in the way.

Shelves and adjustability

Shelves are the cheapest fitting and the most flexible. Ask for adjustable shelves on shelf pins in at least one bay, so the layout can change as your clothes do. Keep shelf spacing tight enough that folded stacks do not topple, and do not make shelves so deep that the back row is lost; a pull-out basket is better than a deep fixed shelf.

Lighting and mirrors

A light inside the wardrobe makes dark clothes easy to find. LED strips along the rail or the front edge of the shelves, switched by a door sensor, are the usual choice, with the power point planned before the wardrobe is built. A pull-out or door-mounted mirror saves wall space in a small bedroom. Our bedroom design guide covers lighting the rest of the room.

Humidity, musty smells and mould

Malaysian bedrooms that are air-conditioned at night and warm by day cycle through humidity, and a tightly packed wardrobe holds it in. Leave a small air gap behind the wardrobe, especially against an outside wall or a bathroom wall; do not pack it solid; use moisture absorbers and change them when full; and never put clothes away damp. Open fittings such as wire baskets and slatted shoe racks help air move. If the wall itself is damp, fix that first, because no fitting will stop mould on a wet wall.

Adding fittings to an existing wardrobe

Many fittings can be added to a sound wardrobe: extra rails, a second hanging level, drawers inside a bay, a pull-down rail or trouser rack, as long as the side panels are in good condition and the new part fits the internal width. If the carcass has swollen or the panels are crumbling around the old fixings, the repair comes first. Our wardrobe repair guide covers what can be saved.

Common Questions

How should I plan the inside of a wardrobe?
Count what you hang long, hang short and fold. Give most space to double hang (two rails) and shelves, keep one long bay, use drawers only for small items, and put everyday things between waist and shoulder height.
What is a pull-down wardrobe rail?
A hanging rail on a hinged arm that swings down to a reachable height when you pull its handle, and returns up when released. It makes the top of a tall wardrobe usable; it suits lighter items such as shirts.
How deep does a wardrobe need to be for hanging clothes?
Our wardrobe door guide explains that a forward-facing rail lets a 40 cm deep frame hang clothes, whereas the conventional side-to-side rail is sold only for the 58 cm frame.
Why does my wardrobe rail sag or pull out?
The fixings in the side panel have failed, or a long rail is carrying too much. The fix is fresh fixing material or a longer support, and a centre support on long rails with heavy coats.
Are soft-close drawers worth it?
For drawers you use daily, yes. Ball-bearing runners are RM25 – RM60 per pair on our guides; metal drawer box systems cost more but run smoother and carry more weight.
How do I stop my wardrobe smelling musty?
Leave an air gap behind it, especially on outside or bathroom walls, do not overpack it, use moisture absorbers, never put clothes away damp, and fix any wall damp first.
Can I add fittings to my existing wardrobe?
Usually, if the panels are sound: extra rails, drawers, a pull-down rail or a trouser rack can go into an existing bay that has the right internal width. Swollen or crumbling panels need repair first.
