Cabinet & Wardrobe LED Lighting
Strips, Sensors, Drivers & Cost (2026)

Light where the task is: inside wardrobes, under wall cabinets and on display shelves.

An LED profile under green kitchen wall cabinets washing light onto a terrazzo worktop

Cabinet and wardrobe lighting is usually an LED strip in an aluminium profile, or small puck lights, run from a low-voltage driver and switched by a door sensor, a motion sensor or a wall switch. The decisions that make it look built-in — where the driver sits, how the cable reaches it, and where the switch goes — have to be made with the carpenter before the panels are closed. ClickBina's guides list LED strip inside a wardrobe at RM50 – RM120 per metre installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

Why cabinets need their own light

A ceiling light behind you throws your own shadow onto the kitchen worktop and into the wardrobe. Deep wardrobes, tall shoe cabinets and the back of a display unit stay dark however bright the room is. A line of light inside or under the cabinet puts light exactly where the task is: the chopping board, the row of shirts, the objects on a glass shelf.

It is also a detail that is cheap to plan and expensive to add later. Once a wardrobe is built and its back panel is fixed, running a cable through it means drilling finished boards and hiding wires in corners.

Strips, pucks and profiles

The LED strip guide explains COB versus SMD strips, 12 V versus 24 V, and why a profile matters. For cabinetry the short version is: a strip in a recessed profile with a diffuser looks built-in; a bare strip stuck to the board looks like an afterthought and peels in the heat.

Under the kitchen wall cabinets

This is the most useful cabinet light in any home. Set the strip towards the front edge of the wall cabinet so light falls on the worktop, not the backsplash, and recess it or add a small pelmet so the strip cannot be seen from a seated position. Choose a warm or neutral white that matches the rest of the kitchen. In a wet kitchen, keep the strip and its joints away from direct splash and steam from the hob.

The wet and dry kitchen guide notes under-cabinet LEDs as one of the things that make a dry kitchen work as the showpiece of an open plan.

Inside wardrobes and walk-in wardrobes

A strip under each shelf and above each hanging rail removes the shadows inside deep sections. The walk-in wardrobe guide lists this at RM50 – RM120 per metre installed and recommends motion-activated lighting at the entry, so the lights come on as you walk in.

For hinged or sliding wardrobe doors, a door sensor turns the light on when the door opens and off when it closes. Sensors are small and cheap, but they must be positioned where the door reaches them, and sliding doors need a motion sensor instead because there is no hinge side to trigger.

Display cabinets and glass shelves

In a display cabinet the light is part of the look. Vertical strips in the front corners, or a COB strip under each glass shelf, light the objects without glare. The dining room design guide prices a full-height display cabinet with glazed doors and LED strip lighting inside at RM2,500 – RM6,000 custom-made, and the display cabinet cost guide covers the cabinet itself.

Dressing tables and mirrors

A dressing table needs light on the face, not above the head. Vertical strips either side of the mirror, or a strip in a profile along the underside of a wall unit, give even light without the downward shadows of a single ceiling light. The dressing table cost guide covers the table and mirror.

Where the power and the driver go

Every strip needs a driver, and every driver needs a mains supply. Three decisions, made with the carpenter before the panels close:

  • The driver's home: inside a ventilated wall cabinet, on top of a wardrobe, or in a service void, reachable without dismantling the unit.
  • The cable route: grooves or holes through the carcass, planned so the low-voltage cable is hidden and does not rub on moving parts.
  • The supply: a new point behind or above the cabinet, fed from a nearby circuit. The mains side is fixed electrical work for a registered wireman.

The electrician services guide explains what a registered wireman does and signs off. Where there is no point nearby, a concealed socket inside the cabinet is one option; the power points guide lists a concealed (chased-in) socket at RM200 – RM400.

Switching: sensors or a switch

  • Door sensors for wardrobes and shoe cabinets with hinged doors.
  • Motion sensors for walk-in wardrobes and sliding doors.
  • A wall switch, or a touch or hand-wave switch on the cabinet, for under-cabinet kitchen lights.
  • One control for a whole run of cabinets, rather than a switch per door.

Heat, damp and safety

LED strips run cool compared with old halogen cabinet lights, but the driver gets warm. A driver shut inside a closed cabinet with clothes packed around it has nowhere to shed that heat, so give it ventilation or put it outside the storage space. Keep strips and joints away from the sink cabinet and anywhere water can reach, and use proper connectors rather than twisted and taped wires.

The length of strip, the number of drivers and sensors, and whether the cabinetry is new or already built decide most of the cost. Lighting planned into new cabinetry costs far less than lighting retrofitted into finished units.

Common Questions

What is the best light for under kitchen cabinets?
An LED strip in a recessed aluminium profile with a diffuser, set towards the front edge of the wall cabinet. Puck lights are the easier retrofit but leave visible pools of light.
How much does wardrobe LED lighting cost?
ClickBina's walk-in wardrobe guide lists LED strip inside a wardrobe at RM50 – RM120 per metre installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Can wardrobe lights turn on when the door opens?
Yes, with a door sensor for hinged doors, or a motion sensor for sliding doors and walk-in wardrobes.
Where does the LED driver go in a cabinet?
Somewhere ventilated and reachable, such as a wall cabinet or the top of a wardrobe, never packed in with clothes.
Can I add lighting to an existing wardrobe?
Yes, with surface profiles and a new point or a nearby socket, but it is neater and cheaper to plan it while the cabinetry is built.
Does cabinet lighting need a wireman?
The mains side — the supply and any new point for the driver — is fixed electrical work for a registered wireman.
Are LED strips safe inside wooden cabinets?
The strips run cool; give the driver ventilation, keep joints away from water, and use proper connectors.
