Ceiling Fan for High Ceilings
Downrod Length Guide (2026)

Choosing the right downrod for double-volume halls, voids and high porches, and what it costs to fit.

Ceiling fan on a long downrod in a double-volume living hall

On a high ceiling, a ceiling fan hangs on a longer downrod so the blades sit at a useful height instead of stirring air near the roof. A common US rule of thumb pairs a 12 feet ceiling with a 24 inches downrod and a 15 feet ceiling with a 60 inches rod, aiming for blades about 9 feet above the floor; the fan maker's manual always wins. Longer rods need a solid slab fixing, a remote rather than a pull-chain, and safe access for installation. ClickBina's ceiling fan installation guide adds RM50 – RM150 per fan for ceilings of 12 ft and above.

Why high ceilings need a longer rod

A fan works by pushing air down onto people. Mounted close to a high ceiling, it moves air in the top of the room where nobody is sitting, and the hall still feels still. The downrod, the metal pipe between the ceiling bracket and the motor, brings the blades down to where they do some good.

Malaysian homes with double-volume living halls, staircase voids, semi-D and bungalow porches and shophouse ground floors are where this comes up. ClickBina's ceiling fan installation cost guide notes that standard 9 to 10 ft ceilings are straightforward, while high ceilings of 12 ft and above need extension rods, taller ladders and extra time.

Downrod length by ceiling height

This chart comes from a US ceiling fan downrod guide (PickHVAC downrod guide). It is a rule of thumb for flat ceilings; your fan's manual and its blade-to-mount distance take precedence.

Ceiling heightDownrod lengthBlade height above floor
8 feet3 inches7 feet
9 feet6 inches7.5 feet
10 feet12 inches8 feet
11 feet18 inches8.5 feet
12 feet24 inches9 feet
13 feet36 inches9 feet
14 feet48 inches9 feet
15 feet60 inches9 feet

The same guide notes that the shortest downrod is 2 inches, that 6 inches is the most common because so many ceilings are 9 feet, and that extension downrods are available up to 72 inches but usually have to be ordered rather than coming in the box.

How to measure before you buy

  1. Measure the ceiling height at the fan point, from the floor to the slab or ceiling board the bracket will fix to.
  2. Check the fan's manual for the distance from the mount to the blades, and the downrod lengths the maker sells for that model.
  3. Subtract to find the rod length that puts the blades at the height you want, then pick the nearest length the maker offers.
  4. On a sloped porch or roof ceiling, make sure the blades clear the slope at their closest point, not just at the centre.

Buy the rod from the fan's own maker. Downrods differ in diameter and thread, and a rod from another brand may not lock properly into the motor yoke or the canopy.

Double-volume halls, voids and porches

A double-volume hall or a staircase void is where most of the extra cost sits, for fans as much as for lights. Our chandelier and pendant light guide explains that the installer needs a safe working platform, a longer drop and a fixing into the slab or beam above, and that scaffolding for a very high void is quoted on top.

Think about the second visit too. The same guide warns that a fitting reachable only with scaffolding gets left dirty. A fan on a long rod collects dust on its blades like any other, so plan how it will be cleaned and serviced.

Covered porches add weather. Outdoor fans should be rated for outdoor use, and a porch fan on a long rod catches more wind, which is one more reason to keep the rod no longer than it needs to be.

Wobble, balance and long rods

A longer rod makes any imbalance more visible: a small wobble at the motor becomes a large sway at the blade tips. Our noisy and wobbling fan guide explains that wobble alone will not bring a fan down, because fans are secured by pins locked with clips; the real danger is the fixing above the fan.

  • Balance the blades after installation; long rods magnify small differences in blade weight.
  • Check that the downrod's pin and locking clip are both in place, and that the grub screws are tight.
  • Fit the canopy flush against the ceiling so it does not rattle.
  • If a long-rod fan sways badly, switch it off and have the fixing checked before using it again.

The fixing above matters more

A fan on a long rod puts the same weight and more leverage on its fixing. It must hang from the concrete slab or a beam, or from a reinforced bracket fixed to them, never from the ceiling board alone. Our ceiling fan hook guide covers cast-in hooks, anchor bolts and mounting plates under plaster ceilings.

Remote, not pull-chain

ClickBina's ceiling fan installation guide lists a pull-chain fan on a high ceiling as a classic mistake: fans on 12 ft and higher ceilings need a remote or a wall-switch control, because the chain is out of reach. If the fan is a DC model with its own remote, check how the wall switch and regulator should be wired; our ceiling fan wiring guide explains the options.

Fan size for a large hall

High ceilings usually come with large rooms. A fan too small for the space will not move enough air however well it is hung, and the installation guide lists large-blade designer fans as a separate price class. In a long hall, two fans on matching rods often work better than one oversized fan. If an existing fan already feels weak, our slow ceiling fan guide helps tell a fault from a fan that is simply undersized.

The total depends on the ceiling height, whether the fixing above is sound or needs reinforcing, whether a fan point exists at the right spot, and how the installer reaches it safely.

How ClickBina can help

WhatsApp us your job details for a quote: the ceiling height in feet, the room, the fan model if you have bought it, and whether there is already a fan point. ClickBina is an experienced KL & Selangor contractor for whole-house refurbishment and trade coordination, so a fan point and slab fixing in a void can be planned while the ceiling is open. We reply within the hour, and the price we agree is a flat price with no hidden charges.

Common Questions

What downrod length do I need for a 12 feet ceiling?
A common US rule of thumb pairs a 12 feet ceiling with a 24 inches downrod, putting the blades about 9 feet above the floor. Check the fan's manual for its own blade-to-mount distance.
How high should ceiling fan blades be above the floor?
The chart used here aims for 7 feet on low ceilings rising to 9 feet on high ones. On high ceilings the rod brings the blades down to where people are, not all the way to the minimum.
Can I join two downrods for a very high ceiling?
The US guide notes rods can be joined with a coupler, and extension downrods go up to 72 inches. Use the fan maker's own rods and coupler so the parts lock together properly.
Does a longer downrod make a fan wobble more?
It makes any imbalance more visible at the blade tips. Balance the blades, check the pin and clip, and have the fixing checked if the fan sways badly.
Can I use a pull-chain fan on a high ceiling?
Not practically. ClickBina's installation guide says fans on 12 ft and higher ceilings need a remote or wall-switch control because the chain is out of reach.
How much extra does a high-ceiling fan cost to install?
ClickBina's installation guide adds RM50 to RM150 per fan for ceilings of 12 ft and above. Reinforcing a fan point to the slab is RM150 to RM480, and scaffolding for a very high void is quoted separately.
