Something is burning, sparking or shocking and you need someone now. Here is what genuinely counts as an electrical emergency, how to isolate the supply safely, what an after-hours visit does and does not cover, and what the work itself costs in the Klang Valley.

An electrical emergency is not defined by how dark the house is. It is defined by whether something is heating, arcing or leaking current right now, and whether a person could be hurt before morning. That test sorts almost every call we take, and it is worth applying honestly before you pay a premium for speed. The table below is the triage we actually use on the phone.

Knowing what is not an emergency saves you money and keeps the out-of-hours slot free for someone who genuinely needs it. These are the calls we routinely tell people to book for the next working day instead:
The honest question to ask yourself is the same one we ask on the phone: can I isolate it, and can I live without that circuit until the morning? If both answers are yes, paying for now is a convenience purchase. That is a perfectly legitimate choice — just make it deliberately rather than in a panic.
If something is smelling, sparking or hot, switch off first and read afterwards. Almost everything that turns a contained electrical fault into a house fire happens in the minutes when the circuit is still live and somebody is still deciding what to do.
Go to the distribution board — the DB box, what most people call the fuse box. If you know which MCB serves the affected area, switch that one off. If you are not sure which it is, switch off the main switch: the whole house dark is a far better outcome than one circuit cooking inside a wall. Do it properly: dry hands, standing on a dry floor, using one hand only and keeping the other away from anything metal. If the board itself is smoking, buzzing, crackling or hot to stand near, do not go to it at all — leave the building and call Bomba.
While you are at the board, it also answers the question that saves the most wasted money on an emergency call: is this your installation or TNB’s supply? Look outside first. If your neighbours and the street lights are dark too, it is a supply interruption — not yours to repair, and not something a private electrician is permitted to touch. If only your house is dark, go back to the board: if your main switch or ELCB has tripped, the fault is inside your installation and it is an electrician’s job. If everything at the board is still switched on and there is simply no supply, or you can see damage to the incoming cable or the meter, that is TNB’s side of the line. Save it in your phone now, not while the house is dark, and confirm it against your own bill, because the bill is the copy that is guaranteed current.
Then stop. There is a short list of things a householder can safely do, and a much more important list of things nobody should attempt in the dark with adrenaline up:
Work on fixed wiring, on the distribution board and on the incoming supply must be carried out by or under the supervision of a competent person registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga (the Energy Commission) under the Electricity Supply Act 1990 — not by a general handyman, and not by you. That is not a formality: it is the reason the certification exists.
This is the combination that most often turns an ordinary problem into a genuine emergency in Malaysia, simply because heavy rain and leaking roofs are routine here. Water finds a live conductor, the conductor energises whatever the water is touching, and suddenly a damp patch is a shock risk across a whole room.
If water is dripping onto or near the distribution board, a socket, a light fitting or a ceiling fan: switch off the main and leave it off until the installation has been inspected and is genuinely dry. Do not put a bucket under the drip and consider the matter handled — water runs sideways inside a ceiling void and reappears somewhere you are not looking. Do not switch anything back on because the dripping has stopped, either. Wet accessories and wet cabling need to be checked by a competent person before they are re-energised; a soaked light fitting works perfectly the next morning, right up until it does not.
If the floor is holding water and the supply is still live, do not walk into the room. Isolate from a dry position if you can reach the board safely, and if you cannot, keep everyone out and say so clearly when you call, so the risk is known before anybody walks in.
Once the electrical side is safe, the water still has to be dealt with, or you will be doing this again after the next storm. The single most common thing we see in the week after heavy rain is an ELCB tripping repeatedly because moisture has reached one outdoor point — which is protection working, not a nuisance to be switched away.
Do not touch the person while the supply is still live. If you do, you become the second casualty and there is nobody left to help either of you. Kill the supply at the main switch first. If you cannot reach the switch, do not try to pull the person away with your hands.
Get medical advice even if they seem completely recovered. The effect of an electric shock on the heart can appear later, and that is a decision for a doctor rather than for you or for us. Afterwards, do not re-energise that circuit until it has been inspected: a shock means current found a path it should never have had, and that path is still there. If your ELCB did not trip during the incident, say so explicitly when you call — it is a strong indication that the protection itself has failed, and testing it is then the first thing that has to happen.
A mild tingle off a metal appliance case — a washing machine, a fridge, a water heater, a kettle — is the same warning in a quieter voice. It means current is reaching the casing, and the only reasons you are not badly hurt are dry hands, dry floor and luck. Stop using it, switch off the circuit, and have it investigated. Visible sparks when you plug something in are a different fault with the same urgency. A brief blue flash as a high-load appliance connects is not unheard of, but a shower of sparks, a bang, blackening at the socket or a smell afterwards means a damaged socket, a damaged plug or a failing connection behind the faceplate. Switch that circuit off and leave it off; the point needs replacing, not reusing. This is the situation most often talked down, and the one we would most like people to stop talking down. The smell comes and goes, there is no scorching anywhere you can see, everything works normally — so it gets left. The problem is that the source is usually somewhere you were never going to see it: inside a junction box, above a ceiling, behind the distribution board, or in the back of a socket that looks perfectly fine from the front.
What you can usefully do is narrow it down. Switch circuits off one at a time and see whether the smell stops. That single step shrinks the search area enormously and makes the eventual visit shorter and cheaper. If the smell is strongest at or near the distribution board, do not experiment — switch off the main and get a registered electrician there the same day.
Do not wait for something visible to appear. Visible blackening means the process has already been running for a long time, and by then you are usually replacing a section of cable rather than a connection. What an electrician is looking for is a joint that has loosened and started heating, an overloaded circuit, a cable damaged by a nail or a screw at some point in the building’s history, or insulation that has aged past the point of doing its job. The biggest misunderstanding about an emergency electrician is what you have actually bought. An out-of-hours attendance is a make-safe: find the fault, remove the immediate danger, and leave the property safe and as usable as possible. It is not a promise to finish the job that night, and honest operators say so before they set off.

The making-good line is the one that surprises people. Reaching a concealed fault means opening a wall or a ceiling, and closing that opening properly is a separate trade and a separate quotation. Expect it, ask about it up front, and it stops being an argument afterwards.

We do not publish a fixed rate for an emergency or after-hours callout, because it genuinely depends on the hour, the distance and the scope — and any site handing you one round number for “emergency” is guessing. What we will say plainly is that after-hours and emergency rates are higher than ordinary-hours rates, and that you should have the figure before anyone sets off. Ask for it, and ask for it in writing or on WhatsApp.

Read the second and third rows together, because the difference between them is the difference between two jobs that get confused constantly. A basic callout and minor repair at RM80 – RM250 is someone attending and putting right a faulty switch, socket or simple fitting. Replacing a protective device at the board — an RCCB or an MCB that has genuinely failed — is a different job at RM250 – RM600, and it is only the right job once testing has shown the device itself is the fault rather than the circuit it is protecting. The one shortcut to refuse, flatly. If anyone offers to stop repeated tripping by bypassing, disabling, jumping out or removing the ELCB/RCCB — or by fitting a larger, less sensitive breaker so it “stops nagging” — say no and do not let them near your board. The earth-leakage device trips because current is escaping to earth, and current that can reach earth can reach a person just as easily. Disabling it does not fix the fault; it removes the only thing standing between that fault and an electrocution or a fire. The tripping was the warning. Three practical points on the money, all of them cheaper to settle before the visit than after. Ask whether the callout charge includes any labour or is purely for attending. Ask what happens if the repair cannot be completed that night — is there a second callout charge for the return visit? And get the figure in a message before work starts; a price agreed verbally while you are frightened is a price you were in no position to negotiate.
In a rented property the emergency still has to be made safe first — nobody should be negotiating responsibility with a socket smoking — but who pays matters, and it is usually clearer than people expect.
A landlord must hand the property over with its major systems, electrical included, in working order, and deteriorating wiring is a latent defect rather than tenant damage. So an electrical wiring fault in an ageing installation is the landlord’s, as is a failed distribution board, a failed ELCB and anything in the fixed wiring. A socket damaged by the tenant overloading it, or an appliance the tenant brought in, is the tenant’s. Two practical points for tenants. Report it in writing immediately, even if you also phone — a tenancy agreement that requires prompt notice usually makes you liable for the extra damage that delay causes. In a strata building there is a second line to find: the boundary between your parcel and common property. Everything downstream of your unit’s distribution board is yours — your points, your fittings, the wiring that serves only your unit. The main risers, the landlord supply and the building’s own infrastructure belong to the management, and a private electrician you call in may not be permitted to work on them at all. On emergency work we try to be honest in both directions: we come quickly when it really is an emergency, and we tell you when it is not — so you are not paying an after-hours rate for something that would be cheaper, calmer and better done tomorrow morning. Most of the emergencies we attend gave weeks of warning first, and three habits catch nearly all of them. Press the test button on your ELCB/RCCB once a month — if it does not trip, you have no earth-leakage protection even though everything appears to work. Put a hand on the sockets carrying heavy loads (kettle, iron, water heater, aircon) occasionally; they should be cool, and a warm one wants looking at. And do not leave a roof or pipe leak near electrics unrepaired, because prolonged damp is the most common single cause of repeat tripping and insulation failure.
