Wall Light & Sconce Installation
Points, Switching, Feature Walls & Cost (2026)

Getting light onto the walls: where the point goes, how it is switched and what it costs.

A wall light needs its own wiring point on the wall and a switch, fed from a lighting circuit; in a finished room that means chasing the wall and patching it, running surface trunking, or choosing a plug-in wall lamp. Plan bedside lights with a switch at the bed, and fix every wall light before feature panels or tiles go up. ClickBina's guides list a wall sconce fitting at RM80 – RM400+ and a new wiring point at RM120 – RM250 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

Types of indoor wall light

TypeWhat it doesWhere it works
Sconce (up, down or both)Soft light washed onto the wall above or belowBeside a bed, along a corridor, either side of a mirror
Up-down cylinderTwo beams, one up and one down, drawing two lines of lightLiving rooms, feature walls, entrances
Wall washerEven light spread across a whole wall surfaceTextured, fluted or panelled walls, artwork walls
Swing-arm or bedside reading lightAdjustable task light aimed at a bookHeadboard walls, reading corners
Low-level or step lightLight near the floor for night-time movementCorridors, beside stairs, children's rooms

Wall lights rarely light a room on their own. The home lighting design guide explains the three layers — ambient, task and accent — and wall lights usually sit in the task and accent layers, with ceiling lights doing the general work.

Every wall light needs a point

Unlike a table lamp, a hard-wired wall light is part of the fixed installation. It needs a cable from a lighting circuit, a back box in the wall at the right height, and a switch cable to wherever you want to switch it. If the room was not wired for wall lights, each one is a new wiring point, listed at RM120 – RM250 per point in the lighting design guide. Adding points to a circuit, and testing it after, is work for a registered wireman; the electrician services guide explains what that person does and signs off.

Decide the positions with the furniture in mind. A sconce beside a bed is placed from the bedside table and the headboard, not from the centre of the wall; a pair either side of a mirror is placed from the mirror.

Adding wall lights to a finished room

In a room that is already plastered and painted, there are four ways to get a cable to a new wall light:

MethodLookTrade-off
Chase the wall and patchInvisible once repaintedDust and patching; the wall needs a touch-up or repaint
Surface trunkingA visible channel on the wallQuick and clean; hard to hide on a feature wall
Plug-in wall lampA visible cord to a socketNo wiring work at all; only suits a nearby socket
From the ceiling voidCable drops inside the wall from aboveWorks on some drywall and panelled walls; not on solid brick

The wall chasing guide explains how chases are cut, filled and made good, and why a chase often shows through thin paint unless it is skimmed. Its repaint touch-up line for a condo is RM400 – RM900, which is worth adding to a wall-light budget if the walls are already finished.

Bedside reading lights and switching

The most common request is a pair of reading lights in the master bedroom. The details that make them work: each light switched at its own side of the bed, so one person can read while the other sleeps; the main ceiling light switchable from both the door and the bed with two-way switching; and a socket or USB outlet beside each bedside table. The light switch types guide explains two-way switching.

Living rooms, TV walls and feature walls

On a living room wall, up-down lights and wall washers do something ceiling lights cannot: they light the vertical surface, which makes a room feel larger and brings out texture. A textured paint, fluted panel or stone wall looks flat under downlights and comes alive with light grazing across it.

If the wall will be panelled or clad, the wall-light points must go in before the panels. Mark the positions on the panel drawings, run the cables and back boxes first, and make sure the panel installer cuts the openings in the right place. The living room wall panels guide covers the panel side of that job.

Corridors, stairs and night lights

Low-level wall lights in a corridor or beside a staircase give enough light to walk at night without switching on the main lights. They can be on a switch, a timer or a motion sensor. The staircase renovation guide lists recessed wall step lights among the staircase lighting options.

Bathrooms and mirrors

Lights either side of a bathroom mirror give even light on the face without the shadows a single ceiling light makes. In a bathroom the fitting must be suitable for a damp room, kept clear of the shower spray, and on a circuit protected by an RCD. Mirror lights with built-in LED are common; they still need a proper point behind the mirror, not an extension cord from a socket. Plan the mirror size first, then set the point so the fitting sits centred behind or beside it, and keep the switch outside the wet zone near the door.

Common wall-light mistakes

  • Positions chosen before the bed or sofa is placed, so the lights end up off-centre.
  • A wall light with no switch of its own, only a plug-in cord or a remote.
  • Panels, tiles or wallpaper installed first, then cut again for the points.
  • Heavy fittings screwed into a hollow drywall without proper fixings.
  • Glare: an exposed bulb at eye level in a seating area.

The number of new points, the distance from the nearest lighting circuit, and whether walls are open or finished decide most of the price. Where walls are already open for a renovation, the chasing and patching cost mostly disappears.

Common Questions

Can I add wall lights without wiring?
Yes, with a plug-in wall lamp whose cord runs to a nearby socket. A hard-wired wall light needs its own wiring point and switch.
How are wall lights added to a finished wall?
By chasing the wall and patching it, by running surface trunking, or sometimes by dropping the cable from the ceiling void inside a drywall or panelled wall.
How much does it cost to install a wall light in Malaysia?
A new wiring point is listed at RM120 – RM250 and a sconce fitting at RM80 – RM400+ (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); patching and repainting are extra.
Should bedside lights have their own switches?
Yes. Each side should switch its own light so one person can read while the other sleeps.
Can wall lights go on a panelled feature wall?
Yes, but the points and cables must go in before the panels, with openings cut in the right place.
Can I put wall lights in a bathroom?
Use fittings suitable for a damp room, keep them clear of the shower, and make sure the circuit is protected by an RCD.
What is an up-down wall light?
A cylinder that throws one beam up and one down, drawing two lines of light on the wall; common on living room and entrance walls.
