Outdoor, Garden & Security Lighting
IP Ratings, Motion Sensors, Solar vs Wired

Lighting a gate, porch or garden? Here is which fittings survive Malaysian weather, where motion sensors actually help, when solar is enough, and the safety rules for outdoor circuits.

Terrace house gate and car porch lit by a sensor floodlight and garden path lights at dusk

Outdoor lights in Malaysia have to survive rain, heat and insects, so start with the rating: Suruhanjaya Tenaga's wiring guideline requires lights outside a house to be weatherproof and waterproof, and our lighting guide suggests at least IP44 for sheltered porches and balconies and IP65 for fittings exposed to rain. For security, a motion-sensor floodlight at the gate and driveway does more than a light left on all night. Solar lights avoid cabling and suit paths and fences, while wired lights are the reliable choice for gates, car porches and anything you depend on. Garden and fence light circuits should be protected by an RCD of not more than 10 mA, and all new wiring belongs to a registered wireman. Indicative Klang Valley prices for 2026: a motion-activated LED floodlight RM150 – RM400 installed, and a new wiring point RM120 – RM250 per point.

The kinds of outdoor light, and what each is for

Most homes need two layers: a few dependable wired lights for security and access, and softer lights for the garden. Our garden landscaping guide covers how lighting fits into a wider garden project.

IP ratings: the number that decides how long it lasts

An IP (ingress protection) rating tells you how well a fitting keeps out dust and water. The first digit is dust, the second is water; the higher, the better protected. In Malaysian rain, humidity and insect life, a fitting with too low a rating fills with water or bugs and fails early.

  • IP44 (splash-proof): the minimum our lighting design guide suggests for balconies, garden areas and porch lights under cover.
  • IP65 (dust-tight and water-jet-proof): for fittings directly exposed to rain or hosing down, and the rating our garden guide recommends for garden fittings in general.
  • Buried and in-ground lights: need a rating made for standing water; check the maker's specification.

Suruhanjaya Tenaga's domestic wiring guideline (GP/ST/No.39/2024) puts the requirement simply: lights installed outside a house must be weatherproof and waterproof. The IP rating is how you check a fitting meets that before you buy it.

Motion sensors: how they work and where they go

Most outdoor motion sensors detect the body heat of a person moving across their field of view and switch the light on for a set time. That makes them good at two things: lighting your way home and surprising someone who should not be there. They are less good at telling a cat from a burglar.

  • Aim across the path, not straight at it. Sensors pick up movement across their view more easily than movement towards them.
  • Keep them away from heat and moving trees. Exhaust vents, aircon outdoor units and swaying branches cause false triggers.
  • Set the timer and sensitivity. Short enough not to annoy the neighbours, long enough to open the gate.
  • Mind the neighbours. Aim floodlights down at your own compound. A light shining into the house opposite causes more trouble than it prevents.

Motion lighting works best alongside the rest of your security. If you have cameras, lights help them see; our home alarm guide explains how alarms and sensors fit together.

Solar or wired?

Solar lightsWired lights
InstallationNo cabling; fix and goNeeds a circuit, cable route and a wireman

After a run of cloudy days a solar light may be dim exactly when you need it, which is why security lighting at the gate is usually wired. For how larger solar lights are built, see our solar street lighting guide.

Safety rules for outdoor circuits

Water and electricity outdoors are a serious combination, and the rules reflect that. Suruhanjaya Tenaga's guideline lists fence lights and garden lights among the installations whose RCD protection should have a sensitivity of not more than 10 mA, the same class as water heaters and pools. In practice that means:

  • Outdoor lighting on a properly protected circuit, not spurred off the nearest socket.
  • Weatherproof junction boxes and glands, with cable run in conduit where it can be damaged.
  • Cable buried or fixed where garden tools and lawnmowers will not find it.
  • All new fixed wiring done by a wireman registered with Suruhanjaya Tenaga.
⚠️ If an outdoor light trips the breaker after rain, flickers in wet weather or has water in its cover, switch that circuit off at the distribution board and have it checked. Do not open a wet fitting with the power on.

Planning the layout

Walk the outside of the house at night before deciding anything. Note where you park, where you fumble for keys, which corners are completely dark and which spots a neighbour's light already covers. A good layout usually needs fewer lights than people expect: one sensor floodlight covering the gate and driveway, a porch light at the door, and low path lights where people actually walk.

If you are renovating, lay conduit for outdoor lights before new paving or a new fence goes in. Our garden guide makes the same point: coordinate garden lighting with the house wiring while the ground is open.

Keeping outdoor lights working

Outdoor fittings need a little attention to keep their rating. Check twice a year that covers and seals are intact and that no water or insects have got inside; clear leaves and soil away from path and spike lights; clean solar panels so they charge properly; and re-aim sensors that have been knocked by gardening or a storm. A fitting whose cover has cracked has lost its IP rating and should be replaced, not taped.

The fittings are rarely the expensive part. Cable runs across a compound, trenching under paving and a new protected circuit at the board are what move the number, which is why outdoor lighting is cheapest to add during a renovation.

Common Questions

What IP rating do I need for outdoor lights in Malaysia?
Our lighting design guide suggests at least IP44 for sheltered porches, balconies and garden areas, and IP65 for fittings directly exposed to rain or hosing down. Suruhanjaya Tenaga's guideline requires outdoor lights to be weatherproof and waterproof.
Are motion sensor lights good for home security?
Yes, as part of a layered approach. A sensor floodlight at the gate and driveway lights your way home and startles intruders, and it helps cameras see. Aim it across the path and down at your own compound.
Solar or wired outdoor lights: which is better?
Solar suits fence tops and path edges far from power. For gates, car porches and security floodlights, wired lights are more reliable because they do not depend on the weather or a battery.
Why does my outdoor light trip the breaker when it rains?
Water is getting into the fitting, a junction box or the cable. Switch the circuit off and have it checked; garden and fence light circuits should have RCD protection of not more than 10 mA.
How much does a motion sensor floodlight cost to install?
Our garden landscaping guide puts a motion-activated LED floodlight for a gate and driveway at RM150 – RM400 installed (indicative Klang Valley range, 2026), more if a new cable run is needed.
Can I plug outdoor lights into an extension cord?
It is not a safe permanent arrangement. Outdoor lighting belongs on a properly protected circuit with weatherproof connections, installed by a registered wireman.
