Ceiling Light Installation
Round, Panel & Linear LED (2026)

Fitting or replacing surface ceiling lights: the type, the point, the fixing and what it costs.

📍 We serve KL, Selangor & Putrajaya.

Round surface-mounted LED ceiling lamp on a painted concrete ceiling in a bedroom

A surface ceiling light, whether a round LED ceiling lamp, a flat panel or a long linear batten, fixes straight onto the ceiling, so it needs no false ceiling and is usually a simple swap on an existing light point. The cost rises when the light goes somewhere new and a wiring point has to be run, when a heavy fitting needs fixing into the slab, or when old marks on the ceiling have to be made good. ClickBina's handyman price list puts a light fitting or downlight swap on an existing point at RM40 – RM100 per point (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

Types of surface ceiling light

Shops sell these under many names: round ceiling lamp, oyster light, flush light, LED panel, batten or linear light. For the installer they fall into a few groups, and the group decides how it is fixed and wired.

TypeWhat it looks likeTypical useInstaller's note
Round or square ceiling lamp (oyster / flush)A shallow disc or box with a diffuserBedrooms, corridors, toiletsLight; usually one point and a base plate

Pendants and chandeliers that hang on a rod or chain are a different job; see our chandelier and pendant light guide.

Do you need a false ceiling for them?

No. Our false ceiling guide explains the difference: recessed downlights need the cavity above the board for the fitting and its driver, while surface-mounted downlights, ceiling lights and many track systems fix straight to a skimmed and painted slab, with the wiring run in neat surface conduit or chased where the building allows it.

That makes surface lights the usual choice for a bare concrete ceiling, a rented unit, or a room where the ceiling height is already low. For spotlights without a false ceiling, our magnetic track light guide compares recessed and surface-mounted track.

Choosing ceiling lights room by room

Our home lighting design guide suggests warm white for living rooms and bedrooms and a cooler white for kitchens, bathrooms and study areas, and warns that a room lit by only one ceiling light feels flat. A central ceiling light works best with one more layer, such as a wall light or a cove strip.

RoomCommon choiceWhat to check
Living roomDecorative ceiling light or surface downlightsEven spread; add a second layer for evenings
BedroomRound ceiling lamp, warm whiteGlare when lying down; a dimmable fitting helps
KitchenSurface panel or linear battenA closed diffuser that is easy to wipe
Bathroom or toiletEnclosed round ceiling lampA sealed, damp-rated fitting with a gasket
Corridor, store, utilitySmall round lamp or battenSwitching from both ends of a corridor

Our bathroom lighting guide lists a surface ceiling light as the usual answer for toilets with a concrete ceiling, and advises an enclosed fitting with a gasket. The fluorescent replacement guide adds that kitchens and bathrooms suit a batten or panel with a closed diffuser that is easy to wipe.

Using the existing light point, or adding one

The biggest cost question is not the lamp but the point it hangs from.

  • Same position, existing point: the old fitting comes down and the new one is connected to the same cable. This is the cheap case.
  • New position on a plaster ceiling: the cable can usually be run above the board to the new spot.
  • New position on a bare concrete ceiling: the cable is run in surface conduit or cut into the slab and plastered over, which is more labour than a run above a board ceiling.
  • One lamp becoming several surface downlights: the existing point can feed the group, but each light needs its own position and connection.

Adding points, changing switches or running new cable is electrical work with its own scope. WhatsApp us your job details for a quote and say which lights stay on existing points.

Fixing to a concrete slab or a plaster ceiling

Most round lamps and panels are light, but the fixing still matters. On a concrete slab the base plate is screwed into plugs in the concrete. On a plaster ceiling, light fittings can be held by fixings made for board: our TV cabinet guide quotes one anchor maker rating a dedicated plasterboard fixing at a maximum of 8 kg in 12.5 mm board, and lists lighting among its uses.

Heavier decorative fittings are different. Our chandelier guide warns that the most common failure is a heavy fitting screwed into the gypsum board alone: the holes widen, the ceiling cracks around the canopy and the fitting tilts. Check the weight on the box before the installer arrives, and if it is heavy, have it fixed to the frame or to the slab above.

Replacing old tube lights and ceiling lamps

Many homes still have long fluorescent fittings in the kitchen, store or porch. Our fluorescent to LED guide explains when to change only the tube and when to replace the whole fitting:

  1. A fitting in good condition with only a few lights: a retrofit tube matched to the ballast is the quickest change.
  2. Many fittings, or ballasts already failing: bypass tubes or new battens remove the weak part.
  3. Rusty, yellowed or cracked diffusers: replace the fitting, because a new tube will not fix the look.
  4. Ceiling being redone anyway: plan recessed panels or downlights with the new ceiling instead.

Old tubes contain mercury and should not be broken or thrown out with household rubbish; the same guide explains disposal.

When the new light does not cover the old marks

A new round lamp is often smaller than the old fitting, which leaves screw holes, a paint outline or a cut-out showing around it. Our ceiling hole patching guide explains the repair: old cables are made safe first, small holes are filled, and a large cut-out in board is patched from behind before the ceiling is repainted. Choosing a fitting with a base large enough to cover the old marks is the cheaper alternative.

Flicker, glow and early failure

Common Questions

How much does it cost to install a ceiling light in Malaysia?
ClickBina's handyman price list puts a light fitting swap on an existing point at RM40 to RM100 per point. A new wiring point is listed at RM120 to RM250 per point (indicative 2026, Klang Valley), with the fitting extra.
Do I need a false ceiling to install ceiling lights?
Not for surface lights. Round ceiling lamps, panels, battens and surface downlights fix straight to a skimmed and painted slab. Only recessed downlights need the cavity of a false ceiling.
Can a ceiling light be fixed to a plaster ceiling?
A light fitting can be held by fixings made for board. A heavy decorative light should be fixed to the ceiling frame or the slab above, not to the gypsum board alone.
Which ceiling light suits a bathroom?
An enclosed, sealed fitting with a gasket, such as a round surface ceiling lamp rated for damp rooms.
Should I change the tube or the whole fluorescent fitting?
Change the tube if the fitting is sound and there are only a few; replace the fitting if it is rusty, yellowed or the ballasts are failing.
Why does my new LED ceiling light flicker or glow when switched off?
Often the switch, dimmer or wiring does not suit LED. ClickBina's flickering lights and glowing LED guides explain the usual causes.
Will the new light cover the old marks on the ceiling?
Only if its base is larger than the old fitting. Otherwise the holes are filled or patched and the ceiling repainted.
