This is the single question that sorts almost every flickering-light complaint, so answer it before anything else. If it’s one bulb or one fixture, the cause is almost always local to that fitting — the bulb itself, its driver (for LEDs), or a dimmer switch that doesn’t match it. If it’s a whole room or the whole house flickering together, the cause is upstream of any individual fitting — a loose connection somewhere shared, an overloaded circuit, or fluctuation in the incoming supply. Knowing which one you have before you call anyone saves time and points straight at the right section below.

This is one of the most common causes of a single flickering light and one of the easiest to fix once you know to look for it. Older dimmer switches were built for incandescent bulbs, which draw current in a way that suits the simple dimming technology of the time. LED bulbs draw and respond to current very differently, and a driver-equipped LED paired with an incompatible old dimmer can flicker, buzz, or fail to dim smoothly — especially at the low end of the dial. The fix is not a different LED bulb; it’s an LED-rated (or “trailing-edge”) dimmer switch matched to the wattage and type of bulb actually installed. If you’ve switched a room over to LED bulbs and only then started seeing flicker on a dimmer, this is very likely the cause.
When flickering shows up across multiple rooms or the entire house at the same time, rather than one fixture, the cause has moved from “this bulb” to “this house’s supply”. Two things are worth distinguishing: a loose connection somewhere shared — at the meter, the main switch, or inside the distribution board — which is an internal fault that needs finding and tightening or replacing; and voltage fluctuation coming from the utility supply itself, which shows up more often during storms, heavy neighbourhood demand, or grid switching, and is outside the property. A competent electrician can usually tell the two apart with a voltage reading at the DB board during an episode of flickering, which is why describing exactly when it happens (time of day, weather, whether neighbours are affected too) is genuinely useful information to give them.
Do not open the distribution board or touch any wiring yourself — keep any investigation to plugs, bulbs and switches. Do not ignore flickering that comes with warmth, a smell, or sparking, and do not keep using a circuit you’ve identified as the source of any of those. And do not simply replace a tripping or flickering circuit’s protection with a bigger breaker to make the symptom stop — that removes the safety margin the breaker exists to provide, rather than fixing the overload or fault behind it.
A proper fault-finding visit works through the same list a careful DIY check does, but with the tools and access to go further: tightening or replacing a loose connection at the switch, fixture or distribution board; checking the load on the affected circuit and redistributing it if it’s genuinely overloaded; confirming whether an LED-incompatible dimmer is the cause and fitting the correct one; and, for whole-house flickering, taking a voltage reading at the board to distinguish an internal fault from a utility-side fluctuation.
