Burning Smell From a Socket or DB Box
What to Do First, Why It Happens & the Repair (2026)

A smell from the wiring is a warning, not a nuisance. Switch off, find the circuit, and get the hot joint fixed.

A burning or hot-plastic smell from a socket, switch or the DB box almost always means heat at a connection that is loose, overloaded or damaged, and it should be treated as urgent. Switch that circuit off at the DB box, unplug what is on it, and do not use it again until it has been checked. If the smell is at the DB box itself, switch off the main. A registered wireman then finds the hot joint and replaces the damaged part. ClickBina's guides put a fault-finding call-out at RM150 – RM400 and swapping a switch or socket at RM60 – RM200 for labour (market estimate 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

First: switch off, then look

  1. If you can see smoke, flames or sparks, or the smell is at the DB box, switch off the main switch and keep clear.
  2. Otherwise, switch off the circuit you suspect at the DB box and unplug anything plugged into that socket.
  3. Do not touch a socket, plug or switch that is discoloured, hot or melted.
  4. Check whether the smell fades once that circuit is off. If it does, you have found the circuit.
  5. Leave it off until it has been checked. Do not reset a breaker that has tripped with a burning smell.

The emergency electrician guide explains what counts as urgent and what can wait; a burning smell is on the urgent side. The power tripping guide makes the same point: if you smell burning or see scorching at the board, switch off rather than resetting again.

Why electrical parts smell: heat at a bad connection

Copper carries current with little heat when the joint is tight and the cable is sized for the load. A loose screw terminal, a worn socket contact or a plug pin that no longer grips makes a small, high-resistance joint. The current still flows, but the joint heats up, the plastic around it softens and gives off that smell, and the heat loosens the joint further. That is why the smell often comes and goes: it appears under load and fades when the appliance is switched off.

Overload does the same thing more widely. The power points guide warns that quietly adding points or spurring a heavy load onto an unsuitable circuit can push it past what the cable and breaker allow, so it runs warm. An adaptor carrying a kettle, an iron and a heater is the household version of the same mistake.

Sockets and plugs

A socket that has been running warm leaves clues: a brown tint around one hole, a plug that is hot to touch after use, or a plug that falls out because the contacts have lost their grip. Heavy loads such as the kettle, iron, water heater and aircon are where it starts. The emergency electrician guide suggests putting a hand on those sockets occasionally: they should be cool, and a warm one wants looking at.

The portable EV charger guide gives the same rule for car charging: a socket that is scorched, loose or warm to the touch after charging should not be used until it is replaced. A scorched socket is replaced, not cleaned; the wire behind it is checked and cut back to clean copper if the heat has reached it.

The DB box

A smell at the distribution board is the one not to investigate yourself. Switch off the main and keep the door closed. Common causes are a loose terminal on a breaker or the busbar, a breaker that is failing, or a board carrying more load than it was built for. The DB box guide covers when a board needs upgrading rather than repairing. In a condo, a smell from the riser cupboard or main switch room is a matter for management.

Switches, light fittings and LED drivers

The light switch guide explains that a warm or crackling switch is usually a loose terminal or worn contacts arcing inside, and that it does not get better on its own. In the ceiling, a failing LED driver or a loose connector at a downlight can smell before it fails; the flickering lights guide separates harmless flicker from flicker that comes with heat or smell. Rats chewing cables in the ceiling space are another cause worth ruling out; see the rats chewing wiring guide.

Appliances and the aircon

If the smell only appears when one appliance runs, and the socket stays cool, the fault is probably inside the appliance or its own cable. Unplug it and stop using it. For an aircon, a burning smell together with a tripping breaker points to a wiring or compressor fault that needs a technician, not more resets; the aircon repair guide covers the diagnosis. ClickBina's aircon diagnostic is RM120 – RM400.

Tracing a smell you cannot see

Sometimes there is a smell and nothing to see. Do not leave it. Work through the house methodically:

  • Note when the smell appears: always, or only when something heavy is running.
  • Switch circuits off one at a time at the DB box and see when the smell stops.
  • Feel the faceplates of sockets and switches on that circuit with the back of your hand.
  • Write down what you found, which circuit, which rooms, and what was running. It shortens the visit.

An electrician can then open the suspect points and test the circuit. Where the source is still hidden, a thermal scan of the board and heavy circuits shows hot joints the eye cannot; the electrical safety inspection guide lists it as an add-on quoted per job.

What not to do

  • Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips with a smell.
  • Do not tape over a scorched socket or keep using it with a different plug.
  • Do not swap a breaker for a bigger one to stop it tripping; the breaker protects the cable.
  • Do not open the DB box cover or work on live wiring yourself.
  • Do not move the load to another socket on the same circuit and carry on.

What the repair usually involves

Most burning-smell repairs are small once the source is found: a socket or switch replaced, a terminal remade, a damaged length of cable cut back or replaced, or a heavy appliance moved onto its own circuit. A faulty breaker is replaced only once testing shows the device itself is the fault. A board that keeps overheating may need an upgrade. Any of this is wiring work on the fixed installation and must be done by a registered wireman.

Common Questions

Is a burning smell from a socket dangerous?
Yes. It means something is overheating. Switch the circuit off, unplug what is on it and have it checked before using it again.
What should I do if the DB box smells of burning?
Switch off the main switch, keep the cover closed and call an electrician. Do not reset breakers.
Why does the smell come and go?
A loose or worn connection heats up under load and cools when the load stops, so the smell appears when a heavy appliance runs.
My socket has brown marks. Can I keep using it?
No. A scorched socket should be replaced and the wire behind it checked.
Can a light switch cause a burning smell?
Yes. A loose terminal or worn contacts can arc inside the switch; a warm or crackling switch should be replaced.
How much does it cost to find the source of a burning smell?
ClickBina's guides put a fault-finding call-out at RM150 – RM400 (market estimate 2026, Klang Valley); the repair is quoted after that.
Is it safe to use an adaptor for the kettle and iron together?
It is a common cause of overheated sockets. Heavy appliances should not share one socket through an adaptor.
