Work out why your power keeps tripping — MCB or ELCB, aircon or water heater — and why you must never let anyone ‘fix’ nuisance tripping by bypassing your safety device.

Before you touch anything, look at your distribution board and note which device flicked off — it is the single most useful clue you can give an electrician, and it costs nothing. There are two very different things that can trip. A small individual breaker (MCB) for one circuit dropping means that circuit drew too much current — an overload or a short. The big main earth-leakage switch (the ELCB or RCCB) dropping — which usually takes out the whole house or a large section — means current is leaking to earth somewhere. Those two point at completely different problems, so knowing which one tripped already tells you half the story. Note it, then read on.
Matching the device to the meaning is the heart of a sensible diagnosis:

An RCCB trip is not the device being annoying — it is the device working. The right response is to find the leak, never to silence the device (more on that below).
This is one of the most common complaints we hear, and it has a few honest explanations. If a single MCB drops the moment the aircon starts, the usual causes are an overloaded circuit — the aircon sharing a circuit with too much else — or the compressor drawing a heavy surge as it kicks in, on a circuit that is undersized or protected by a breaker that is too small. If instead the ELCB/RCCB trips when the aircon runs, that strongly suggests the aircon (or its wiring) is leaking current to earth — a genuine fault inside the unit, often in an ageing or water-affected compressor or in damp outdoor wiring. In that case the aircon itself needs attention: an aircon service or repair to find the leakage, not just a reset. A well-maintained unit on a correctly sized, dedicated circuit should not trip your board — if yours does, it is telling you something, whether about the unit (worth checking the unit and its rating) or the circuit feeding it.
When the earth-leakage switch trips repeatedly, current is escaping to earth somewhere and the device is protecting you from it. Sometimes it is one clearly faulty appliance; sometimes it is trickier — several appliances each leaking a tiny amount that together cross the trip threshold, so no single item looks guilty. Damp is a classic trigger: after heavy rain, moisture in an outdoor socket, a garden light, or a water-affected junction can start a leak that a dry day would not. The correct path is always the same: find the source of the leakage and fix it — a faulty appliance, a damaged cable, a damp fitting — or, where the whole house sits on one RCCB, improve the board so the fault can be isolated. What is never correct is to make the tripping stop by weakening or removing the protection.
Most trips trace back to a familiar shortlist. Knowing the usual suspects helps you describe the problem — and spot an electrician who is guessing:

You can do a little safe detective work before an electrician arrives — and only this much. Keep to plugs and switches; do not open the distribution board or touch any wiring. A sensible, safe sequence:
That is the whole of the safe DIY zone. If resetting the breaker does not hold, if you smell burning, or if you see scorching at the board, do not keep resetting it — switch off and call an electrician. Repeatedly forcing a breaker that keeps tripping is exactly what the protection is there to prevent.
This is the most important paragraph on the page. If your power keeps tripping and someone offers to make it stop by bypassing, disabling, jumping out or removing the ELCB/RCCB — or by fitting a “bigger” fuse or breaker so it “stops nagging” — refuse, and do not let them near your board. The earth-leakage device trips because current is leaking to earth, and that leak can flow through a person just as easily as to ground. Disabling the device does not fix the fault; it removes the one thing standing between that fault and an electrocution or a fire. The tripping was the warning light; bypassing it is unscrewing the smoke alarm because it keeps going off. A genuine electrician does the opposite — they hunt down the source of the leakage and repair it, so the RCCB has no reason to trip and stays fully in place, protecting you.
The tell: be very suspicious of anyone who “solves” persistent tripping in five minutes with no fault-finding and it simply never trips again. Ask them plainly what they changed. If the honest answer is that they removed, bypassed or up-rated the protection rather than fixing a fault, have it put right and protected again. Your safety device earning its keep is not a defect to be silenced — it is the cheapest life insurance in the house.
The way someone approaches a tripping problem tells you almost everything. An honest, registered electrician diagnoses before they fix: they ask which device tripped and when, they isolate circuits and appliances to find the leak or overload, and they explain what they found. They will happily tell you the cheap answer when it is a cheap answer — a single faulty appliance, a damp fitting to dry out — rather than reaching for the most expensive one. And they will never propose defeating a safety device. If someone quotes a big fix before they have found the cause, jumps straight to “you need a whole new board” without checking, or offers to make the tripping stop by weakening the protection, that is your cue to get someone else. Two very Malaysian culprits deserve their own mention. Water heaters are a leading cause of earth-leakage trips: a heating element degrades and starts leaking current to earth, so the RCCB trips the moment the heater is switched on. The monsoon is the other: heavy rain drives moisture into outdoor sockets, garden lights and less-than-watertight junctions, starting leaks that vanish once things dry out. Trips that cluster around downpours point straight at a damp fitting to find and seal. If damaged or ageing cable is the underlying issue across the house, the longer-term answer can be partial rewiring rather than chasing one fault after another.

A modest diagnosis fee that finds the real cause is money well spent — it is what stops you paying for the wrong “fix” repeatedly, or worse, accepting a dangerous bypass to save it.
A few habits cut down on the surprise blackouts. Do not overload a single circuit with heaters, kettles and irons at once — spread high-draw appliances around, and give genuinely heavy items (a water heater, an aircon, an EV charger) their own dedicated circuit. Service ageing appliances, water heaters and aircons especially, before their leaks start tripping the board. Keep outdoor sockets and fittings weatherproof for the monsoon. And if your whole house sits on a single earth-leakage device, consider a split-load board upgrade so a future fault isolates to one area instead of blacking out everything. Where the real limit is total capacity — too many heavy loads for the supply — that is the rare case that leads toward a three-phase upgrade, but confirm that with a load assessment first.
