Limewash Wall Design
Room-by-Room Ideas for Malaysian Homes

Browse 12 limewash and mineral-paint wall looks by colour and home type, then check where the finish works, where it does not, and how it is quoted.

Illustrative concept design: living room with a deep clay-rust cloudy limewash wall in warm low sun behind a cream linen sofa and a round timber table

Limewash is a lime-based mineral wash brushed onto a porous wall in thin passes. It dries to a soft, cloudy, chalky matt finish with gentle movement in the colour, which is why it suits feature walls, bedrooms, dining rooms and calm natural interiors. It works on dry, sound, absorbent plaster; it is not a finish for showers, kitchen splash zones or a damp wall. Use the filters below to narrow the 12 concept designs by colour family or home type.

What limewash is, and what it is not

True limewash is slaked lime thinned with water and tinted with mineral pigments. Brushed on in several thin passes, it soaks into a porous wall rather than forming a plastic film on top, so the colour dries with soft variation where each brush stroke landed. Many shops also sell limewash-effect or mineral paints that imitate the look with a different binder; they behave differently on the wall, so ask which one a quote is for.

ClickBina's texture paint and decorative finishes guide treats limewash as one of four decorative families: relief textures, thin mineral washes such as limewash, trowelled Venetian plaster and microcement, and metallic glazes. It describes limewash as breathable and the most forgiving to repair, because its natural variation absorbs a recoat, and it is clear that breathable is not the same as waterproof.

Choosing a limewash colour by room

Limewash reads lighter and softer than the same colour in an ordinary emulsion, and it changes through the day as the light moves across the wall. Pick from a sample panel on the real wall, in daylight and at night, rather than from a small chip.

Where limewash works, and where it does not

  • Wet zones. Showers, the wall behind a basin and the kitchen splash zone need tiles or a purpose-designed wet-area system. A decorative coating is not one.
  • Damp walls. A breathable finish does not cure a leak or rising damp. Find and fix the source first; anti-mould paint only resists mould on the surface.
  • Glossy or sealed walls. Limewash needs a porous, absorbent surface. Over an old glossy or sealed paint it may need a mineral primer, or the old coat taken back first.
  • High-knock walls. Corridors, foyers and the wall beside a dining table get touched. Limewash marks more easily than a washable paint, although a recoat blends in.
  • Exterior walls. Rain and splash-back wear an exterior wash. Keep it to sheltered walls under a roof and ask for an exterior-rated system.
  • Flat walls first. Side light across a wall shows every bump and patch, so uneven walls are skim coated before the finish goes on.

Living with a limewash wall

Limewash is a matt, mineral surface, so it is cleaned gently: dust it, and dab marks with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing. Because the colour is naturally uneven, a scuffed patch can usually be blended with a light recoat of the same mix, which is easier than patching a flat emulsion or a polished plaster. Keep a little of the tinted mix after the job for that reason.

Light makes or breaks the look. Up-down wall lights or a wall washer grazing across a limewash wall bring out the cloudy movement; a single downlight in front of it flattens it. If you plan wall lights, fix their positions before the wall is finished so no cable chase is cut through it later.

What a limewash wall costs

No ClickBina guide publishes a limewash-specific price. The texture paint guide deliberately leaves limewash on a whole room unpriced, because it depends on the walls. As a reference only, the same guide publishes RM500 – RM1,500 for a textured or special-effect paint finish on a standard accent wall of roughly 80 – 120 sq ft, or RM8 – RM20 per sq ft, against RM1.80 – RM3.00 per sq ft for an ordinary repaint (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026). Treat that band as context, not a limewash quote.

Preparation is often the real first line: if the wall needs flattening, internal skim coat is a separate trade at RM1.50 – RM4.00 per sq ft. Ask for the quote to name the product and whether it is true lime or a limewash-effect paint, the number of passes, the preparation and the wall areas measured.

About the images: every image on this page is an illustrative concept design generated to show a colour and room option. Captions describe what each render shows. RM figures are quoted unchanged from the ClickBina texture paint guide, indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026; ClickBina guides give different figures for a limewash wall, so no limewash-specific price is shown.

Common Questions

What is limewash paint?
A lime-based mineral wash, tinted with pigments and brushed on in thin passes. It soaks into a porous wall and dries to a soft, cloudy, chalky matt finish. Limewash-effect paints imitate the look with a different binder.
Can I use limewash in a bathroom?
Only on dry walls away from water, such as a guest toilet's upper walls or the vanity wall in a dry zone. Showers and splash zones need tiles or a purpose-designed wet-area system.
Can limewash go over my existing painted wall?
It needs a porous surface. Over an old glossy or sealed paint it may need a mineral primer, or the old coat taken back first, so ask for the wall to be checked before a quote.
Is limewash good for a damp wall?
No. It is breathable, which helps a masonry wall dry outward, but it is not waterproof and does not cure a leak or rising damp. Fix the source first.
Does a limewash wall mark easily?
It marks more easily than a washable paint, but it is the easiest decorative finish to touch up, because its natural variation absorbs a light recoat.
Can limewash be used outside?
On sheltered walls under a roof, with an exterior-rated system. Walls that take driving rain wear faster.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show colour and room options. Your wall is assessed and quoted on its own size, condition and finish system.
