Wood Kitchen Cabinet Design
Ideas for Malaysian Homes

Browse 14 wood kitchen cabinet looks by style and home, then compare solid timber, wood veneer, wood-look laminate and plywood, the practical limits and the per-foot price of each.

Illustrative concept design: L-shaped kitchen with light oak flat doors, a white quartz island and a long window splashback

A “wood” kitchen in Malaysia is usually one of four builds: solid timber doors such as nyatoh, meranti or rubberwood; wood veneer, a thin real-wood skin on a board; wood-grain laminate, a printed and textured sheet that only looks like wood; or a plywood box with any of those doors on it. The look can be almost the same, but the price, the care and how each one copes with a humid, wok-heavy kitchen are not. Use the filters below to narrow the 14 concept designs by style or home type, then read the comparison before you choose a finish.

Solid timber, veneer, laminate or plywood?

Solid timber is real wood all the way through. Nyatoh and meranti are the usual choices for doors and frames, and the solid wood kitchen cabinet guide explains why a Malaysian quotation for “solid wood” nearly always means solid doors and frames on an engineered box rather than a solid timber carcass. Solid timber can be sanded and refinished, but it moves with humidity and needs termite treatment.

Wood veneer is a thin slice of real oak or walnut pressed onto a stable board. It gives real grain with far less movement than solid timber, which is why most walnut and oak slab kitchens use it. Wood-grain laminate is a decorative sheet with a printed and textured grain; it is the budget and hard-wearing option, and a good textured one is convincing from a normal distance. The melamine vs laminate guide compares it with thinner melamine.

Plywood is the box, not the look. A moisture-resistant plywood carcass with a laminate door is the sensible build for the sink run and the wet kitchen; the plywood kitchen cabinet guide explains the grades and why “waterproof plywood” is still not waterproof.

Practical limits to check before you commit

  • Humidity. Solid timber swells and shrinks through the year, so wide solid panels need room to move. Veneer and laminate on a stable board stay flatter.
  • Termites. Ask for the treatment to be named on the quote for any solid timber or plywood part, especially on the ground floor of a landed house.
  • Water at the sink. The base under the sink and the dishwasher sees the most water. A moisture-resistant plywood box with sealed edges lasts far longer there than particleboard.
  • Heat and oil. Doors beside the hob take steam and grease. Matt and textured finishes hide marks; deep grooves, flutes and shaker corners hold grease and need more cleaning.
  • Edges. On veneer and laminate, the edge banding fails before the face does. See how edge banding is chosen.
  • Colour match. Real wood varies from batch to batch and darkens or fades in sunlight; ask to see a sample door in your own kitchen light before the full order.

What these wood kitchen designs cost

ClickBina's cabinet guides price kitchens per foot run (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026). A melamine build runs RM180 – RM300 per ft run, laminate doors RM280 – RM420, wood-veneer doors RM500 – RM750 and solid nyatoh or meranti doors and frames RM600 – RM1,000, according to the solid wood kitchen cabinet guide.

For the wet side, the plywood kitchen cabinet guide puts a laminate door on a moisture-resistant plywood box at RM350 – RM600 per ft run, and upgrading an ordinary carcass to moisture-resistant plywood at about RM30 – RM60 per ft run. Teak and rubberwood are not priced on their own here, because two ClickBina guides give different bands for them; they are quoted on the timber and door you choose. Worktops, appliances, handles, lighting and the plinth are separate lines on a proper quote.

Common Questions

Are solid wood kitchen cabinets good in Malaysia?
They suit dry kitchens and owners who like real timber that can be refinished. Solid wood moves with humidity and needs termite treatment, so most homes keep it to the doors and use a stable board or plywood for the box.
What is the difference between wood veneer and wood-grain laminate?
Veneer is a thin slice of real wood, so the grain is genuine and each panel differs. Laminate is a printed and textured sheet that copies wood; it is cheaper and tougher on the surface, and a textured one looks convincing.
Can I have wood cabinets in a wet kitchen?
Yes, as a wood look. A wood-grain laminate door on a moisture-resistant plywood box, with every cut edge sealed and a raised base, copes with a wet kitchen far better than solid timber or particleboard.
Is plywood better than solid wood for kitchen cabinets?
They do different jobs. Plywood is a stable, moisture-resistant box; solid wood is mainly used for doors and frames. Many good kitchens use a plywood carcass with veneer, laminate or solid timber doors.
Which wood colour suits a small condo kitchen?
Light oak or pale ash tones keep a small kitchen bright, especially with handleless doors and a pale worktop. Save dark walnut for a tall wall or an open-plan kitchen with plenty of daylight.
Do wood cabinets attract termites?
Solid timber and untreated board can. Ask for termite-treated material and a raised plinth, and keep the cabinets off a damp floor, especially on the ground floor of a landed house.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your kitchen is measured and quoted on its own layout, board and finish.
