Illustrative concept design: open greige L-shaped kitchen with tall units, a small island and a dining table by a garden window

Kitchen design in Malaysia usually starts with one split: a dry kitchen on show near the dining area for light cooking and serving, and a wet kitchen behind it for wok frying. This gallery shows the dry or open kitchen. Choose the layout that fits the room first (one-wall, L-shape, U-shape or a peninsula), then the door finish and colour, then the worktop. The door finish moves the cabinet price most, so the 14 concept designs below are grouped by style and by the home they usually suit.

How to choose a kitchen design

Work through four decisions in order. Each one narrows the next, and changing an early one late is what makes a kitchen run over budget.

  • Layout. One-wall suits a small condo; an L-shape suits most condos and terrace dry kitchens; a U-shape or an L with a peninsula suits a larger semi-D kitchen. The kitchen layout guide compares them.
  • Door style. Flat slab doors read modern and wipe clean; shaker and glass fronts read classic but hold more grease in their grooves and frames, so they work best in a dry kitchen. See the kitchen cabinet door styles.
  • Colour. Light greys, whites and wood grains keep a small kitchen bright; a dark base run under light wall cabinets grounds an open kitchen without closing it in.
  • Worktop. Quartz suits most kitchens, sintered stone takes heat, solid surface is seamless and repairable, and laminate is the budget option. The kitchen countertop guide compares them.

If your home has a separate wet kitchen, the dry kitchen can be as decorative as you like. If there is only one kitchen, choose finishes that take daily wok cooking: flat doors, a hard worktop and a strong hood.

Practical limits to check before you commit

  • Grease and steam. Grooves, frames and fluted panels hold grease. Keep them away from the hob or keep them in the dry kitchen. A ducted hood matters more than any door finish; the hood and hob cost guide explains the options.
  • Space around a peninsula or island. Both need clear walking space on every open side. Where the room is tight, a peninsula joined to a cabinet run uses less floor than a freestanding island.
  • Moving the sink or hob. A new layout can mean moving water, waste, gas and power points. Price that work before you fall for a layout.
  • Cabinet board. Melamine board is for dry kitchens only. Near water, choose moisture-resistant plywood or a waterproof cabinet material.
  • Timeline. Custom cabinets are measured, drawn, approved and then made. The custom kitchen cabinet process guide explains the stages and the deposit.

What these kitchen designs cost

The door finish moves the cabinet price most. ClickBina's kitchen cabinet design styles guide prices cabinets per running ft by finish: melamine board RM180 – RM300, laminate or HPL doors RM280 – RM420, acrylic or PU / 2K spray doors RM380 – RM600, glass or wood-veneer doors RM500 – RM750, and solid wood door and frame RM600 – RM1,000.

The worktop is priced separately per running ft in the countertop guide: laminate RM60 – RM150, solid surface RM150 – RM350, quartz RM250 – RM600 and sintered stone RM400 – RM900.

For a whole kitchen renovation, the kitchen renovation cost guide gives size tiers: a small apartment or condo kitchen RM12,000 – RM20,000, a medium terrace or standard condo kitchen RM20,000 – RM35,000, and a large semi-D or bungalow kitchen with an island RM35,000 – RM70,000+. If the cabinet boxes are sound, the cabinet door replacement guide puts a respray or reface of the doors only at RM800 – RM2,500 on a typical rental-unit refit. These are indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026.

Common Questions

What is the most popular kitchen design in Malaysia?
Modern flat slab doors with hidden or slim handles in one calm colour are the most common choice, often with a wood-grain accent. Shaker and Japandi kitchens are the main alternatives for people who want warmth or a classic look.
What makes a kitchen look modern?
Flat slab doors, no visible handles or very slim ones, one main colour, a plain worktop and appliances built in or kept out of sight. Clutter on the worktop undoes the look faster than any finish choice.
Which kitchen layout suits a Malaysian home?
One-wall and L-shaped layouts suit most condos, a galley suits a long narrow kitchen, and an L-shape with a peninsula or a U-shape suits a larger terrace or semi-D dry kitchen. Keep the sink, hob and fridge close with nothing blocking the path.
Does the kitchen style change the price?
Yes, mainly through the door finish. Melamine and laminate doors cost the least per running ft, sprayed doors cost more, and glass, veneer and solid timber cost the most. The worktop is priced separately.
Is a Japandi kitchen practical with Malaysian cooking?
Yes, if the hard-working areas use wood-grain laminate rather than real timber and the fluted or slatted accents stay in the dry kitchen or on tall units away from the hob.
Can I change the look without replacing the whole kitchen?
Often yes. If the cabinet boxes are dry and sound, new doors, a respray or new handles change the look for much less than a new kitchen. Swollen or soft boxes usually mean a leak that has to be fixed first.
How much does a whole new kitchen cost?
ClickBina's kitchen renovation cost guide puts a small apartment or condo kitchen at RM12,000 – RM20,000, a medium terrace or standard condo kitchen at RM20,000 – RM35,000 and a large semi-D or bungalow kitchen with an island at RM35,000 – RM70,000+.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your kitchen is planned and quoted to your own space, layout and cooking habits.
