Illustrative concept design: open japandi condo kitchen with off-white wall cabinets, a fluted light oak island and an oak dining table under a linen dome pendant

Japandi and Muji kitchens share a palette of light wood, off-white and beige, matt surfaces and very little on show, but they are not the same. Japandi leans on joinery: oak-look slab doors with recessed pulls, a fluted island or a slatted screen, a pale stone-look worktop. Muji style is plainer and more practical: white flat doors, a light timber worktop, one open shelf and utensils on a rail. Both need closed storage and, for wok cooking, a separate wet kitchen so the pale finishes stay clean. These 13 concept designs show both styles, storage details and the wet kitchen. Use the filters to narrow them by style or by home.

Japandi or Muji: what is the difference?

The kitchen styles guide puts Japandi and Muji-style kitchens in one section because they share a palette. In practice they lead to different kitchens, and it helps to choose one before talking to a carpenter.

  • Japandi is joinery-led: oak or ash-look slab doors, recessed pulls, one fluted or slatted feature, a pale stone-look worktop, very little on display.
  • Muji style is plainer and more practical: white or off-white flat doors, a light timber worktop, one open shelf of plain white dishes and everyday tools on a rail.
  • Both use matt surfaces, warm light and closed storage for everything else.
  • Neither uses gloss, chrome or strong colour.

If you like the plain Muji look across the house, the Muji-style interior guide explains how it carries into living rooms and bedrooms.

Light wood in a humid kitchen

Real oak and ash veneer are beautiful but move and stain in a humid kitchen. That is why most Malaysian Japandi kitchens use a wood-grain laminate with a textured surface: it gives a consistent colour and tolerates splashes far better. The wood kitchen cabinet guide compares laminate, veneer and solid timber and where each belongs.

Keep fluted fronts, slats and real timber worktops in the dry kitchen. Around the sink, use sealed edges and a moisture-resistant box, and leave the wok cooking to a wet kitchen behind a frosted or clear glass slider.

Keeping a Japandi or Muji kitchen calm

Both styles look calm only when nearly everything is behind doors. Give the rice cooker and kettle a worktop-height nook with a socket inside, closed by a pocket door or a lift-up door; the hidden door cabinetry guide covers concealed doors. Tall pantry walls in oak-look laminate swallow dry goods and the broom.

What stays on show should be chosen: a few handmade ceramics in one niche, plain white dishes on a Muji shelf, wooden spoons on a rail. The organisers guide covers drawer inserts and rails that keep the rest in order.

Common Japandi and Muji kitchen mistakes

  • Flat wood prints. A smooth, printed wood look reads as fake; choose a textured grain.
  • Too many wood tones. Keep to one wood tone, or two that are clearly different, plus off-white.
  • Open shelving everywhere. One shelf is Muji; a wall of shelves is clutter.
  • Fluting by the sink. Grooves hold water and grease; keep them on the island or dry side.
  • Cold lighting. Warm white light suits light wood; cold light turns it grey.

What a Japandi or Muji kitchen costs

The style sets the finish, and the finish sets the price. ClickBina's kitchen styles guide lists melamine board at RM180 – RM300, laminate doors at RM280 – RM420 and glass or wood-veneer doors at RM500 – RM750 per foot run. Most Japandi kitchens use wood-grain laminate; real veneer sits in the higher band, and fluted facings are an extra line on the quote. A Muji-style run in white melamine or laminate is usually the lower-cost route.

For the worktop, the countertop guide puts quartz at RM250 – RM600 and solid surface at RM150 – RM350 per foot run. The kitchen layout guide lists a moisture-resistant plywood box with laminate doors for the wet kitchen at RM350 – RM600 per foot run. Ceramic tiles are RM10 – RM18 per sq ft supplied and laid, and a fixed base-cabinet island with no plumbing or electrical is RM5,000 – RM15,000. These are indicative Klang Valley figures for 2026.

Common Questions

What is the difference between a Japandi and a Muji kitchen?
Japandi is joinery-led, with oak-look slab doors, recessed pulls and a fluted or slatted feature. Muji style is plainer, with white flat doors, a light timber worktop and one open shelf.
Is a Japandi kitchen practical in Malaysia?
Yes, with textured wood-grain laminate instead of real veneer near water, fluted fronts kept to the dry side, and wok cooking in a separate wet kitchen.
What colours suit a Muji-style kitchen?
White or off-white doors, light ash or birch-tone timber, soft grey and plain white ceramics.
Can a small condo kitchen be Japandi or Muji?
Yes. A compact one-wall run in white and light wood with a two-burner induction hob suits most small condos.
What worktop suits a Japandi kitchen?
A pale speckled or stone-look worktop, or light timber in a Muji kitchen kept away from the sink.
How do I hide appliances in a Japandi kitchen?
Build a worktop-height nook with a socket inside and close it with pocket doors or a lift-up door.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show Japandi and Muji kitchen options. Your kitchen is measured and quoted to its own walls and appliances.
