Steam, grease, heat and a hood duct: how to plan a kitchen ceiling that still looks good in five years.

A kitchen ceiling has to survive steam, grease and heat, carry the cooker hood duct and still give bright light over the worktop, so keep it flat and simple, use a moisture-resistant board or calcium silicate in the wet kitchen, box the hood duct and the pipes with an access panel, and put the lights over the counters rather than in grease-catching light channels. ClickBina's plaster ceiling cost guide lists calcium silicate board at RM8 – RM12 per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); a site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.
Every other room asks the ceiling to look good. A kitchen asks it to cope: steam from the rice cooker and the wok, grease that drifts past the hood, heat above the hob, and a cooker hood duct and water pipes that need a route. A ceiling that ignores those loads sags, stains or turns yellow within a few years. The good news is that a practical kitchen ceiling is usually simpler and cheaper than a living room design, not more expensive.
ClickBina's plaster ceiling design guide sums up the kitchen in one line: a flat moisture-resistant board, a bulkhead over the cabinets with task downlights, and no light channels that collect grease. This page explains each of those choices.
Eleven kitchen ceilings built around what a kitchen asks of a ceiling: steam and grease in the wet kitchen, a seamless look in the dry kitchen, a route for the hood duct, access to pipes and light on the worktop. Many Malaysian homes split cooking into a wet kitchen for heavy frying and a dry kitchen that opens to the dining area. They need different ceilings. The wet kitchen gets the steam and grease, so it wants a board that tolerates moisture and a surface that can be wiped. The dry kitchen behaves more like the dining room and can follow the ceiling design of the living hall, as long as the hood is working. ClickBina's wet and dry kitchen guide explains the split itself.
ClickBina's bathroom ceiling board guide explains that ordinary gypsum board is vulnerable to moisture and that moisture-resistant or cement-based boards are used where humidity is high, including kitchens. The three usual choices compare like this:
| Board | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture-resistant (MR) gypsum | Smooth, paintable, looks like the rest of the house | Resistant, not waterproof; a leak above still ruins it |
| Calcium silicate / cement board | Copes with steam and damp, will not sag | Heavier; joints need care to look smooth |
| PVC panels | Wipeable, quick to fit, common in older wet kitchens | Visible joint lines; softens near high heat |
For a wet kitchen with heavy cooking, calcium silicate or PVC is the safer choice; for a dry kitchen open to the dining room, moisture-resistant gypsum gives the same seamless look as the hall.
A ducted cooker hood pushes grease-laden air outside through a duct that usually runs above the ceiling or inside a bulkhead to an external wall. Decide the hood position and the duct route before the ceiling is framed, keep the run short with few bends, and leave access to the duct joints. Recirculating hoods need no duct but return the heat and smell to the room. ClickBina's hood and hob guide compares hood types, and the home cooker-hood section of ClickBina's kitchen exhaust ducting guide covers the duct.
The gap between the top of the wall cabinets and the ceiling collects dust and grease. The neat answer is a bulkhead that drops the ceiling to meet the top of the cabinets, or tall cabinets that run to the ceiling. A bulkhead also hides the hood duct and gives a clean line for downlights along the counter. Agree the cabinet height with the carpenter before the ceiling is built, or the two will not line up.
A kitchen needs brighter, more even light than a living room, aimed at the worktops rather than the middle of the floor. Place downlights in a line above the front edge of the counter so you are not cooking in your own shadow, add under-cabinet strips for the worktop, and keep open light channels and decorative coves out of the wet kitchen, where grease settles in them. If the dry kitchen joins the dining area, a pendant over the island or table can match the hall.
In condos and double-storey houses, the kitchen ceiling often hides water and waste pipes from the floor above as well as your own supply pipes. Fit an access panel under valves and joints so a plumber can reach them without cutting the ceiling. If the ceiling already shows water stains, find and fix the leak first; a new board over a wet slab will stain again.
ClickBina's low-ceiling guide records the by-law minimum room height of 2.25 m for kitchens, so a deep bulkhead in a low kitchen needs checking. In an open kitchen, run the same ceiling height and edge detail into the dining area so the two read as one space, and change the board, not the look, where the wet zone begins. For the hall itself, see ClickBina's living room ceiling design guide.
