Garden Fish Pond & Water Feature
Small Ponds, Fountains & Pondless Features

The sound of water without a mosquito farm. Here is how to choose, build and keep a small pond or water feature in a Malaysian garden.

Small garden fish pond with a stone wall fountain and water plants

A small garden fish pond or water feature needs three things to work in Malaysia: moving water, so mosquitoes cannot breed; a watertight lining or basin, so it does not leak into the garden or the house wall; and a safe, weatherproof power point for the pump. Wall fountains, bowls and pondless features give the sound of water with the least upkeep; a small fish pond adds life but needs filtration, shade and regular cleaning. ClickBina’s koi pond guide puts a basic decorative pond under 2,000 litres at RM8,000–RM15,000, and a weatherproof outdoor power point at RM250–RM500.

Koi need deep water and serious filtration, and our koi pond cost guide covers them in detail. This page is about everything smaller: guppies, goldfish and local fish in a small pond, and features that are about sound and movement rather than fish.

Mosquitoes: the first design rule

Still water in a warm climate breeds mosquitoes. Wikipedia’s garden pond article notes that in tropical climates garden ponds may become breeding sites for mosquitoes and increase the spread of diseases they carry, and also that ornamental fish are often stocked for algae control and pest control against mosquito larvae. In Malaysia that makes two rules non-negotiable:

  • Keep the water moving with a pump that runs continuously, so larvae cannot settle.
  • In a fish pond, keep fish that eat larvae, and avoid dead corners where water stands still.
  • Do not leave saucers, empty basins or a switched-off fountain holding water.
  • Clear leaves so the surface stays open.

Our mosquito control guide explains why removing standing water matters more than fogging.

Keeping the water in

Wikipedia describes pond liners as PVC or EPDM sheets laid between the soil and the water, and notes that ponds can also be built with other sealing layers. In Malaysian gardens the common choices are a flexible liner, a preformed fibreglass or plastic shell, or a concrete or brick basin waterproofed on the inside. The key details:

  • Protect a flexible liner from stones and roots with an underlay.
  • Waterproof a concrete basin fully before tiling or rendering over it.
  • Seal every pipe that passes through the basin wall.
  • Build the edge a little higher than the ground so rain runoff and soil do not wash in.
  • Keep ponds and fountains away from the house wall, or waterproof that wall properly, so water does not track into it.

Pump, filter and oxygen

The Wikipedia article explains that people often install pumps in garden ponds to keep dissolved oxygen higher, which may be essential for keeping fish, and that filters are used to reduce algae where nutrient-rich water is added. For a small fish pond, that means a pump sized for the volume, a filter the pump feeds through, and a fountain or waterfall that stirs the surface. For a wall fountain or bowl, a small submersible pump is usually enough. Keep the pump intake clear of leaves and clean it regularly; a blocked pump is the most common failure. Choose a pump that can be lifted out easily for cleaning, and keep a spare impeller or a second small pump if the pond holds fish, so the water keeps moving while one is being fixed.

Power: safety first

A pump runs day and night outdoors, often in the water itself. Our outdoor power socket guide explains that an outdoor point should be a proper weatherproof socket on a circuit protected by an RCD of no more than 30 mA, with the cable in conduit, and that heavy continuous loads such as pond pumps should be kept on their own circuit. Never run an extension lead across the garden to a pond. Fixed wiring outdoors is a job for a competent wireman.

Fish, plants and shade

  • Choose hardy, small fish suited to warm water, and do not overstock.
  • Add aquatic plants for shade and to compete with algae.
  • Place the pond where it gets partial shade; full afternoon sun heats small ponds and feeds algae.
  • Keep chlorinated water changes small, or let tap water stand before adding it.
  • Net the pond if birds or monitor lizards take the fish.

Where to put it

Put the feature where you will see and hear it, near a window or a seating area, but think about maintenance and safety too. It needs a power point nearby, a hose tap for topping up, and a way to drain it. Keep it away from overhanging trees that drop leaves, and from the base of the house wall. Our garden path guide covers the paths that lead to it, and damp, shaded paths near water are where algae makes surfaces slippery.

Children and safety

Even shallow water is a drowning risk for small children. If toddlers use the garden, choose a pondless feature, a wall fountain or a bowl with no open depth, or fit a strong grid just below the surface of a pond. Keep electrical parts out of reach and out of the water except for pumps designed for submersion.

Upkeep through the year

  • Weekly: remove leaves, check the pump is running and the water is moving.
  • Monthly: clean the pump intake and filter; top up with rested water.
  • Before the monsoon: clear the surrounding drains and check the edge so runoff cannot wash in.
  • When away: a pond pump must keep running; a fountain can be drained so it holds no standing water.

Wall fountains, bowls and pondless features are usually quoted per job, because the feature itself, the stone or tiles and the plumbing vary so widely.

Common Questions

Will a garden pond breed mosquitoes?
Still water can. Keep the water moving with a pump that runs continuously, keep fish that eat larvae, and avoid dead corners and switched-off fountains holding water.
What is a pondless water feature?
A stream or cascade that drains into a hidden reservoir, so there is no open water. It is the safest choice with small children.
How much does a small garden pond cost?
ClickBina’s koi pond guide puts a basic decorative pond under 2,000 litres at RM8,000–RM15,000.
Does a fountain pump need a special socket?
It needs a weatherproof outdoor point on a circuit protected by an RCD of no more than 30 mA, ideally on its own circuit.
What fish are easy in a small pond?
Small, hardy fish suited to warm water, not too many of them, with plants and partial shade.
How do I stop pond water turning green?
Shade, plants, a filter and not overfeeding the fish. Algae grows fastest in full sun with nutrient-rich water.
Can a water feature damage my house wall?
Yes, if it sits against the wall and leaks or splashes. Keep it away from the wall or waterproof the wall properly.
