Making the small WC-and-basin room downstairs comfortable, easy to clean and good enough for visitors.

A guest toilet, or powder room, is the small room with a WC and a basin but no shower, usually near the living area on the ground floor. Renovating one is mostly about fitting a comfortable toilet, a compact basin and a door into very little space, keeping it ventilated, and finishing it well because visitors see it. ClickBina's guides list a new WC supplied and installed at RM350 – RM1,200, a counter-top basin with a PVC cabinet at RM600 – RM1,200 and an exhaust fan at RM150 – RM400 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.
Many double-storey terraces, semi-Ds and bungalows have a small toilet downstairs, near the living room or the kitchen, used by visitors and by the family during the day. In older terraces it is often a squat toilet with a tap and a small basin; in newer homes it is a compact room with a sitting WC and a vanity. Estate agents and magazines call it a powder room or a half bath.
It differs from a full bathroom in three ways that shape the renovation: there is no shower, so the room stays mostly dry; it is very small, so every fitting fights for space; and it is the one bathroom guests use, so it is worth finishing more carefully than its size suggests. Full bathrooms are planned differently, and the bathroom renovation cost guide covers those.
Most guest toilets are long and narrow, with the door on the short side. The usual arrangements are:
| Layout | Where it works | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| WC at the far end, basin on a side wall | Long, narrow rooms; the most common layout | Leave knee room in front of the WC and space to pass the basin |
| Basin at the far end, WC on a side wall | Rooms slightly wider than a door | The basin becomes the view from the door, so it should look good |
| Corner basin beside the door | Very small rooms | A small corner basin splashes more; keep the spout over the bowl |
| Basin outside the room, in the corridor | Tiny toilets where a basin will not fit | Guests wash hands in a shared space; plan a mirror and light there |
Keep the toilet where its drain already is if you can. The toilet bowl types guide explains that moving a toilet drain means core-drilling and adds RM2,000 – RM5,000, which in a small guest toilet can cost more than the fittings themselves.
In a small toilet the door decides whether the room feels usable. A door that swings inwards eats the space in front of the WC; a door that swings outwards can hit people in a corridor. Many small guest toilets use a bi-fold door, which folds into half the width, or a sliding door where a wall pocket or track is possible.
Pick a door that tolerates damp even though there is no shower, because the floor is still washed and the room is humid. The bathroom door types guide compares aluminium bi-fold, WPC, PVC and ABS doors, and lists a new bi-fold at RM250 – RM800 installed and a WPC or fibreglass door at RM400 – RM900.
A short-projection WC, one that sticks out less from the wall, leaves more knee room in a narrow toilet. A wall-hung toilet with a concealed cistern frees the floor and makes the room easier to clean, but it needs a wall or frame that can hold it and an access panel for the cistern. Either way, check the distance from the wall to the drain before buying, so the pan fits the existing outlet.
Older terraces often still have a squat toilet downstairs. Converting it to a sitting WC is one of the most common guest-toilet jobs, especially for older parents; the squat-to-sitting conversion guide explains the step, the drain position and the floor work involved.
A guest-toilet basin is used for handwashing only, so it can be smaller and shallower than a master bathroom basin. A small wall-hung basin keeps the floor clear; a slim vanity adds a little storage for spare toilet rolls and cleaning products. The bathroom basin types guide compares wall-hung, counter-top and semi-recessed basins and lists a counter-top basin with a PVC cabinet at RM600 – RM1,200.
Choose a tap whose spout reaches well into the bowl. In small basins a short spout sends water onto the counter and the floor, which is the main source of mess in a guest toilet.
Most Malaysian toilets have a bidet spray beside the WC, which means water on the floor even without a shower. The floor should fall gently to a floor trap, and the wall and floor around the WC should be waterproofed and properly grouted. The bidet spray guide covers hoses, holders and the power point needed for a smart seat; replacing a bidet spray is listed at RM40 – RM100.
If the guest toilet sits above a room (for example on the first floor of a semi-D), treat the floor as a wet area and waterproof it fully, because a leak there shows up on the ceiling below.
Guest toilets are often internal rooms with no window, or with only a small louvre. Without air movement they smell, stay damp and grow mould on the ceiling. An exhaust fan ducted to the outside, switched with the light or on a timer, is the usual answer. The exhaust fan guide explains wall versus ceiling fans and ducting routes, and lists a domestic fan at RM150 – RM400 installed where a power point already exists.
Because a guest toilet has no shower, its walls stay mostly dry above the splash zone. That allows finishes you might avoid in a full bathroom: a dark or patterned feature wall, a statement mirror, a pendant or wall light, or decorative panels above a tiled dado. Keep the lower wall behind the WC and basin tiled or otherwise washable.
Light is the other half of the finish. A single ceiling light in a narrow room casts shadows on the face at the mirror; a light above or beside the mirror, with a softer ceiling light, makes the room feel larger and more welcoming.
The guest toilet is often the one that older relatives use during a visit. Small changes help: a sitting WC at a comfortable height, a grab rail fixed into solid wall beside it, a non-slip floor, a door that opens outwards or slides so it cannot be blocked if someone falls, and a lever tap. None of these add much cost if they are planned into the renovation rather than added later.
A guest toilet is smaller than a full bathroom, but the fixed costs of a WC, basin, door, fan and tiling still apply. These are ClickBina's published indicative prices (2026, Klang Valley):

💬 WhatsApp for a quoteThe basic bathroom tier includes a shower set that a guest toilet does not need, so price a guest toilet from the lines for the fittings you are actually changing rather than from that tier. Moving the WC, converting a squat pan, adding a fan where there is no power point, or upgrading to a wall-hung toilet and custom vanity move the price up.
