Shower Niche
Placement, Waterproofing & Cost

Planning a recessed shelf in the shower? Here is where to put it, how the niche must be waterproofed, why the sill should slope, and what it costs.

Tiled shower niche with a stone sill and mosaic back panel in a condo bathroom

A shower niche is a recessed shelf in the shower wall, and its waterproofing matters more than its tiles. The membrane must run continuously into the niche, the sill should slope back into the shower, and it should sit out of the direct spray and clear of concealed pipes. It is usually priced inside the bathroom job: mosaic niche work at RM20 – RM45 per sq ft, or a built-in false wall with a niche at RM4,000 – RM10,000+ (indicative Klang Valley, 2026). What a shower niche is, and why it leaks

A shower niche is a recessed shelf built into the bathroom wall, usually inside the shower area, so shampoo bottles sit in the wall instead of on a rack or on the floor. It looks simple, but it is one of the few places where a tiled shower wall is deliberately opened up, and every opening in a wet wall is a place where water can get behind the tiles.

A niche that leaks rarely shows it at the niche itself. The water runs down inside the wall and appears as damp paint on the other side, a stain at skirting level or, in a condo, a patch on the neighbour’s ceiling. That is why the waterproofing of the niche matters more than its size or its tiles. For how bathrooms fail in general, see bathroom waterproofing.

Three ways to build a niche

Most niches in Klang Valley homes are built in one of three ways. Which one suits your bathroom depends on what the wall is made of and what is inside it:

TypeHow it is madeSuitsWatch out for
Cut into a brick wallAn opening is hacked into an existing brick partition, then rendered, waterproofed and tiledNon-structural brick walls with no pipes in the wayConcealed pipes and wiring; the depth left behind the niche
Built out with a false wallA new stud or board wall is built in front of the old one, with the niche framed into itWalls you cannot cut; hiding pipes at the same timeBoard type and every joint and screw must be sealed before the membrane
Ready-made niche insertA pre-formed box is set into the opening and tiled aroundQuick installs on a new or rebuilt wallThe joint between the insert and the membrane

A built-out niche is often the cleaner answer in an older bathroom, because nothing has to be cut out of a wall whose contents are unknown. The false wall cost guide prices a built-in false wall with a niche at RM4,000 – RM10,000+, which usually covers more than one shelf.

Where to put it

  • Out of the direct spray. A niche on the wall the shower head faces is soaked every time. The side wall, or the wall behind the shower head, stays drier and cleaner.
  • At a comfortable height for the people who use the shower, not only for the tile layout. Check the height standing and sitting.
  • Away from concealed pipes and wiring. The mixer and shower pipes often run in the same wall. Locate them before any cutting starts.
  • Not in a structural wall. Cutting into a reinforced concrete wall or column is a structural matter; the wall hacking guide notes that structural changes need PE-stamped drawings and council approval.
  • Lined up with the tile joints, so the top, bottom and sides of the niche fall on grout lines rather than on awkward cut slivers.

Waterproofing the niche: the part that matters

The waterproofing membrane has to run continuously into the niche, across its back, sides, top and sill, and join the membrane on the surrounding wall with no gaps. A niche that is tiled over bare render with only the main wall membraned is a hole in the system.

Manufacturer instructions set the details. The Davco K10 Plus datasheet, as one example of a liquid membrane used under tiles, calls for a minimum 2 coat application to achieve a 1 mm dry film thickness, and says all sheeting joints need to be covered with a 50 mm wide tape. Where the niche is framed in board, the same datasheet lists plasterboard, fibre cement sheeting, marine grade ply and wet area composition board, tells you to check with the board manufacturer for suitability, and says screw or nail heads must be treated before the membrane goes on.

Corners are the weak point. The internal corners of a niche are small and awkward to brush, which is exactly where a rushed membrane goes thin. Ask how the corners will be reinforced, and whether the membrane will be allowed to dry before tiling: the K10 Plus datasheet gives 6-8 hours before tiling and 3 days before flood testing.

The sill: slope it into the shower

Water that lands on a flat niche shelf sits there, soaks the grout and eventually finds its way into the wall. The sill should slope slightly back into the shower so that water runs off it, the same principle as the falls to the floor trap that membrane makers insist on for wet areas.

A single piece of stone, a porcelain slab or a solid-surface strip for the sill avoids a grout line where the water collects. If the sill is tiled, the grout joint should face the shower, not the back of the niche. See grouting vs waterproofing for why grout on its own does not keep water out.

Tiling and trims

Niches are usually tiled in the wall tile or in a contrasting mosaic. Mosaic is priced higher per sq ft because of the labour: the tiling contractor guide lists mosaic at RM20 – RM45 per sq ft, and names niche and border work as one of the reasons.

  • Edges: a mitred tile edge, a metal or PVC trim, or a bullnose tile. Mitred edges look clean but chip if the tile is thin.
  • Back panel: a single tile or slab on the back looks neater than several cut pieces.
  • Grout: a wet-area grout, sealed where the product calls for it, and a flexible sealant at internal corners where tiles meet at an angle.

Common niche failures and what they point to

What you seeLikely causeUsual fix
Damp paint on the other side of the wallMembrane missing or broken inside the nicheOpen the niche and re-waterproof; sometimes the shower wall
Black grout on the niche sillFlat or back-sloping sill holding waterRegrout short term; rebuild the sill with a fall
Cracked tiles or grout at the niche cornersMovement in a board-framed niche; unsealed board jointsRemove, seal joints and screws, re-membrane, retile
Hollow-sounding niche tilesTiles over a wet or poorly bonded bedLift and relay after the bed has dried

If the leak is already showing downstairs, work from the least invasive fix upwards. The shower floor leak repair guide explains that ladder: regrout and reseal first where the membrane is still sound, a full hack and retile only where it has failed.

What a niche costs

A niche is rarely priced as a standalone job. It is part of a wall that is being retiled or rebuilt, so its cost sits inside the bathroom quote. These indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026 are quoted unchanged from the guides named:

Adding a niche during a full re-waterproof costs far less than cutting one into a finished wall later, because the membrane and tiles are being redone anyway. For the whole room, see the bathroom renovation cost guide. Above the basin, storage usually goes into a mirror cabinet instead, covered in the bathroom vanity cabinet guide.

What to ask before the niche is built

  1. Which wall, and have the concealed pipes and wiring in it been located?
  2. Cut into the wall, built out with a false wall, or a ready-made insert?
  3. Which membrane product, how many coats, and how are the niche corners reinforced?
  4. If the niche is framed in board: which board, and how are the joints and screw heads sealed?
  5. Does the sill slope back into the shower, and what is it made of?
  6. Is there a ponding or flood test before the tiles go on the floor?

A membrane turned up every wall 150–300mm and a 24–48 hour ponding test are part of a proper bathroom re-waterproof; the niche waterproofing is extra detail on top of that, not a replacement for it. The bathroom renovation waterproofing requirements guide covers what the rest of the room needs.

Common Questions

How much does a shower niche cost in Malaysia?
It is usually priced inside the bathroom job. For reference: mosaic tiling with niche and border work runs RM20 – RM45 per sq ft, and a built-in false wall with a niche RM4,000 – RM10,000+ (indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026).
Does a shower niche need waterproofing?
Yes. The membrane has to run continuously into the niche, over its back, sides, top and sill, and join the wall membrane. An unwaterproofed niche is an opening in the shower wall.
Where is the right place for a shower niche?
Out of the direct spray, at a comfortable height, clear of concealed pipes and wiring, and never cut into a structural wall.
Can a niche be added to an existing tiled bathroom?
It can, but it means cutting into a finished, waterproofed wall and redoing the membrane around the opening. It is far simpler during a full re-waterproof or retile.
Why is the grout on my niche sill always black?
The sill is probably flat or sloping backwards, so water sits on it. Regrouting helps for a while; the lasting fix is a sill that falls back into the shower.
Is a board-built niche as good as one cut into brick?
It can be, if the board is suitable for wet areas and every joint and screw head is sealed before the membrane, as the membrane maker’s instructions require.
