Scratched floors, muddy walls or a cat on the balcony ledge? Here is how to plan a renovation around your pets.

A pet-friendly home is built around four things: floors that shrug off claws, water and accidents; a lower wall zone that can be scrubbed; windows and balconies a cat cannot fall from; and a place to wash and feed without mess spreading through the house. Porcelain tile is the toughest floor, and a good SPC plank with a thicker wear layer is the usual choice where tiles are not wanted. ClickBina's guides list porcelain at RM18 – RM35 per sq ft supplied and laid, and premium SPC at RM12 – RM18 per sq ft installed (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). In a condo, check the by-laws on pets first.
A pet-friendly renovation is not one product; it is a set of choices that depend on the animal. A large dog is hard on floors, doors and gates; cats climb, scratch and look for high ledges and open windows; small dogs and older pets struggle on slippery floors and steps. Write down what your pets actually do before choosing finishes, and plan for the pets you expect to have over the next several years, not only the ones you have now.
In a condominium or apartment, the building's by-laws come first. ClickBina's condo pet rules guide explains that a JMB or MC can regulate or ban pets through additional by-laws, and that nuisance rules apply even where there is no specific pet by-law. Management approval is also needed for renovation work in a strata unit.
The floor takes most of the punishment. Claws scratch soft surfaces, accidents and water bowls wet the floor, and a polished surface makes pets slide and skid on corners. The best floors for pets are hard, waterproof and not glossy.
| Floor | Claws | Water and accidents | Grip for pets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porcelain or homogeneous tile, matt | Very resistant | Waterproof; grout lines need sealing | Good if matt or textured |
| SPC plank, thicker wear layer | Resistant; wear layer takes the scratches | Water-resistant surface | Fair to good; avoid high gloss |
| Laminate | Scratches on the surface | Joints swell if water sits | Often slippery |
| Solid or engineered timber | Scratches and dents | Sensitive to standing water | Fair |
| Carpet | Snags on claws | Absorbs accidents and odours | Good grip, hard to keep clean |
Porcelain tile is the toughest option, and a matt or lightly textured finish gives paws more grip; ClickBina's floor tile replacement guide covers tile types. Where you want the warmth and quiet of a plank, choose SPC with a thicker wear layer, which ClickBina's SPC flooring guide describes as the most worthwhile upgrade in the specification. Keep laminate and timber out of the rooms where bowls, litter and wet paws are.
Pets mark and scuff walls at their own height: wet noses, muddy shoulders, scratching posts that miss, and cats sharpening claws on corners. A durable lower zone saves repainting every year. Options include a washable scrubbable paint, a tiled or panelled dado in the utility room and pet areas, and corner guards at the corners pets race around. ClickBina supplies and installs wall panels and interior finishes by budget and use case, and for pet zones the choice should favour surfaces that can be wiped with water.
Keep skirting tight to the floor and sealed, so hair and water do not collect behind it.
A pet flap lets a dog or cat reach the yard or a utility area without a door being left open. Fit it in a door that is not a fire door: many condo main doors and doors onto a staircase are fire-rated, and cutting a hole in them destroys the rating. ClickBina's fire-rated door guide explains where these doors are required.
Inside the house, a gate at the top and bottom of the stairs keeps puppies and older pets off them, and a gate to the kitchen keeps pets away from hot surfaces and food. Choose gates that are fixed to the wall, not pressure-fitted, at the top of stairs.
Falls from windows and balconies are the most serious risk for cats in high-rise homes. ClickBina's invisible grille guide notes that invisible grilles are fitted mainly to stop children and pets falling while keeping the view and the breeze, and that cat and dog owners are one of the main groups who ask for them. On landed homes, conventional grilles on windows and a secure gap-free fence keep dogs in and other animals out.
Insect screens also meet claws. ClickBina's mosquito screen guide describes fixed aluminium-frame screens as robust and resistant to pet damage, and warns that magnetic screens are not recommended in homes with pets because pets push through the centre split.
Washing a dog in the family bathroom spreads hair and water through the house. A wash point in the yard, the utility area or the car porch, with a tap, a floor trap and a floor that falls to it, keeps the mess outside. Waterproof the floor as you would a bathroom if it sits over a room or a slab you care about, and use a hair trap on the drain so hair does not block the pipe.
Plan fixed places for bowls, litter trays, beds, leads and food rather than letting them spread around the house. A feeding corner on a tiled or sealed floor, near a wipeable wall, contains spills. Litter trays belong in a ventilated spot with a washable floor, away from where the family eats. A tall cabinet or a section of the utility cabinet for food, medicine and grooming tools keeps them away from pets and children, and a built-in bench or cabinet can hide a litter tray with an opening for the cat.
Puppies and kittens chew. Run cables in trunking or inside walls, keep power points for chargers above the reach of a curious pet where possible, and make sure lower cabinets that hold cleaning products close firmly. Check any indoor or balcony plants for toxicity to pets with a vet, and keep toilet lids and washing machine doors closed.
