Outdoor Tap & Garden Sink
Installation Guide for Malaysian Homes (2026)

A tap where the hose reaches and a sink that drains to the right place: how an outdoor water point is planned and installed.

An outdoor tap is a branch taken from the house's cold-water supply to a tap on an outside wall or a post, with its own isolating valve so it can be shut off without turning off the house. A garden or wash-up sink adds a drain, which is the part that needs the most thought: the waste water has to go to a proper drain point with enough fall, not onto the lawn or a neighbour's side. Use pipe and fittings made for outdoor use, protect exposed pipe from sun and knocks, and put the tap where a hose will actually reach. On ClickBina guides, replacing a tap is RM80 – RM200 in labour; adding a new point depends on the pipe run and is quoted after a look.

What an outdoor tap or garden sink is for

SetupTypical useWhat it needs

Tap on a garden postWatering far corners, filling a pond or bucketsBuried pipe run, a firm post, valve at the house end

Decide the main job first. A tap for a hose is simple; a sink with a drain is a small plumbing project.

Choosing the position

  • Close to where the water is used: the porch, the garden bed, the back door.
  • Near an existing cold-water pipe, so the new branch is short.
  • Where a hose can reach the far corners without crossing the driveway.
  • Away from power points; outdoor sockets and taps should not share the same wet spot.
  • Where splashing and overflow drain away from the house wall.

Our garden path guide makes the point that the route people already walk to the tap is the one a path should follow.

Taking the water supply

The outdoor tap is usually teed off the nearest cold-water pipe, often the pipe feeding the kitchen or the porch area. Fit an isolating valve on the new branch inside or close to the house, so the outdoor tap can be shut off for repairs or while you are away without affecting the rest of the home. In a house with a roof tank, decide whether the tap runs from the mains (stronger pressure, good for a hose) or from the tank.

The main valve for the house should be easy to find before any work starts; our stop valve and ball valve guide explains the types.

Pipes and fittings for outdoor use

  • Use pipe suited to outdoor or buried runs, and protect any exposed plastic pipe from direct sun with a cover or paint suited to it.
  • Clip exposed pipe firmly to the wall so it does not sag or get knocked by cars and bikes.
  • Bury garden pipe runs deep enough to avoid garden forks and mower damage, and mark the route.
  • Choose a solid brass or stainless tap with a hose connector; cheap plastic taps crack in the sun.

How an outdoor tap is installed, step by step

  1. Agree the tap position, the pipe route and, for a sink, the drain point, before any wall is drilled.
  2. Shut the water at the main valve and drain the section of pipe being cut into.
  3. Fit a tee on the chosen cold-water pipe and an isolating valve on the new branch.
  4. Run the new pipe to the tap position, clipped to the wall or laid in a trench, with a sleeve where it passes through a wall.
  5. Fix the tap to a solid backing plate or post so it does not twist when a hose is pulled.
  6. Turn the water back on slowly, check every joint for weeps, and run the tap to clear air and debris.
  7. Make good any hacked plaster or trench, and seal the wall penetration against rain.

A tidy job leaves the pipe straight, clipped and protected, and the isolating valve somewhere you can reach without a ladder.

The sink drain: where the water goes

A garden sink needs somewhere to send its water. Connect the waste to an existing floor trap or drain point with enough fall, or to a gully built for the purpose. Do not let it run onto the lawn, into a neighbour's yard or across a footpath. For sinks used to wash fish, meat or oily pans, a simple strainer keeps solids out of the drain, and a grease problem later is much harder to clear. Check with the management first in a gated or strata scheme.

Choosing a garden or wash-up sink

  • Stainless steel: tough, easy to clean and does not rot; the usual choice outdoors.
  • Concrete or terrazzo-look basin: heavy and durable, good on a masonry stand.
  • Ceramic utility sink: fine under a roof, but chips if knocked.

Put the sink on a stand or counter that will not rot: masonry, stainless steel or aluminium, not raw timber or chipboard. Our outdoor kitchen guide covers weatherproof cabinets and tops if you want more than a simple sink.

Protecting the tap and pipes

Sun, knocks and slow leaks are the enemies outdoors. A small cover or box over an exposed tap keeps the sun off plastic parts. Fit the tap at a height that suits a bucket but is out of the way of car doors. Check the joint behind the tap now and then; a slow drip behind a wall can dampen the plaster for months before anyone notices. If you travel, shut the isolating valve.

Useful extras

  • A double outlet: one side for a permanent hose, one side for filling buckets.
  • A tap with a lockable handle if the tap faces the street.
  • A drip line or timer for garden beds and green walls; our vertical garden guide explains why hand-watering rarely lasts.
  • A hose reel on the wall so the hose does not lie in the sun.

Common Questions

Can I add an outdoor tap to my house?
Usually, yes. A branch is teed off the nearest cold-water pipe and run to a tap on an outside wall or post, with its own isolating valve.
Should the outdoor tap run from the mains or the roof tank?
Mains pressure is better for a hose and car washing. A tank-fed tap works but gives lower pressure. Decide before the pipe is run.
Where should a garden sink drain to?
To an existing floor trap or drain point with enough fall, or a gully built for it, never onto the lawn or a neighbour's side. Use a strainer if you wash fish or oily items.
How much does it cost to replace an outdoor tap?
ClickBina's plumbing guide lists replacing a tap at RM80 – RM200 in labour, with the tap itself extra (market estimate 2026).
What tap is best outdoors?
A solid brass or stainless steel tap with a hose connector. Cheap plastic taps crack in the sun.
Why is the wall behind my outdoor tap damp?
Usually a slow leak at the joint behind the tap. Shut the isolating valve and have the joint repaired before the plaster is damaged.
Do I need approval to install a garden sink?
In a landed home, usually not for a simple tap or sink. In gated or strata schemes, ask the management first, especially about where the drain goes.
