Booster pump faults announce themselves clearly if you know what you are listening for. Almost every call falls into one of five patterns:

These checks need no tools and no covers removed. They resolve a useful share of call-outs and, when they do not, they give the plumber a much better starting point:
What not to do: do not open the pressure vessel, adjust its charge, or dismantle the pressure switch. Those are the parts people get wrong, and the pressure vessel in particular is a component that should be checked and serviced by the pump technician rather than by the householder. This guide gives no procedure for it deliberately.
If you take one thing from this page, take this. A booster pump is meant to start, build pressure, and stop. If it starts and stops repeatedly — every few seconds while a tap runs steadily, or repeatedly in the night when nothing is running — every one of those starts is wear on the motor, the switch and the electrical contacts. A pump left cycling will fail far sooner than one that is repaired.
There are two families of cause, and telling them apart is what the plumber does first:
A quick way to separate the two at home: with everything closed, does the pump still start by itself? If yes, look for a leak first — you may be about to fix a plumbing problem rather than a pump problem. If the pump is quiet when everything is closed but cycles the moment a single tap runs, the vessel or the switch is the likelier culprit. Either way, do not leave it cycling while you decide. A pump left in this state for weeks is how a repairable fault becomes a replacement.
A humming pump is drawing current and producing nothing, which is both a fire risk and a fast route to a burnt-out motor. Switch it off at its isolator.
The usual explanations are a seized impeller — common where a pump has stood unused, or where debris has entered from a tank — a failed starting component, or a fault on the supply side. A pump that does nothing at all when called usually points to the supply, the protective device, or the control rather than the motor: check whether the breaker or RCCB has tripped, and if it has, treat that as information rather than an inconvenience. A protective device that trips repeatedly on a wet-area circuit is doing exactly what it exists to do.
Two things are worth knowing before you call. First, whether the pump has been standing unused — a holiday home or a rarely used line seizes far more often than a daily-use pump. Second, whether anything upstream has been worked on recently, because debris disturbed during other plumbing work is a classic cause of a suddenly seized pump.
A pump that runs and runs while the shower stays weak is either not getting water, not moving it, or moving it somewhere else.
Pumps are never silent, but a change in the noise is worth acting on. Three distinct sounds mean three different things.
A pump that has become louder and rattles the mounting has usually worked loose, or its anti-vibration mounts have perished. Left alone, the vibration transfers into the pipework and starts loosening joints — a noise problem becoming a leak problem.
A pump making a gravelly or grinding noise is generally not getting a clean, full flow of water. That points back to the supply side: tank level, a partly closed valve, or a blocked strainer.
A bang in the pipes when the pump stops is water hammer. It is hard on joints and fittings throughout the house, and it is a control and installation matter rather than a fault in the pump itself. In a condo, it is also the fastest route to a complaint from a neighbour, because the noise travels through the structure.
Water around a pump has three usual origins, and they are not equally serious. A weeping fitting is often a straightforward re-make. A failed seal on the pump itself is a component repair whose economics depend on the age of the unit. A cracked housing ends the conversation — that is a replacement.
What raises the urgency in every case is proximity to electrical equipment. A pump is an electrical device sitting in a wet location, which is exactly why the circuit protection described in the next section exists. If water is reaching the electrical side, isolate it and get it looked at rather than mopping around it.

A booster pump is a fixed electrical appliance in a wet location, and its connection is licensed work. How to use that table honestly. The bottom row is the one you are actually asking about, and it has no published figure — so the way to judge a repair quotation is against the replacement bands above it. A component repair on a pump with years of life left is usually worth doing. The same repair on a pump that is old, has already been repaired once, or is a size the household has outgrown is money spent on a machine that will be replaced anyway.
