Illustrative concept design: long white-topped kitchen island with an oak-look front, a sink and four bar stools under black pendants in an open condo kitchen

A good kitchen island design starts with two choices: a plain island of base cabinets with a worktop, or a working island with a sink or hob built in. A plain island needs only carpentry and a top, so it is the simplest to build and to change later; a working island also needs water, waste or power run across the floor. After that, the space around the island, the top material and any seating decide the design. Use the filters below to narrow the 12 concept designs by style or home type.

How to choose a kitchen island design

Start with the space, not the style. An island needs a clear walkway on every side, so measure the room with the cabinets and appliance doors open, not closed. Then decide whether the island will hold a sink or hob, and whether people will sit at it. Those three facts decide most of the kitchen island design.

  • Plain island of drawers and doors if you want more worktop and storage. It needs only carpentry and a top, and suits most dry kitchens.
  • Sink or hob island if you want to face the room while you cook or wash up. It also needs plumbing or electrical work by those trades, and the points are planned before the cabinet is built.
  • Peninsula if the room is too narrow for walkways on all four sides. It joins the end of a cabinet run and gives most of the benefit in less space.
  • Mobile trolley if you rent, or want to test where an island works before building one.

If your home has a wet and dry kitchen split, the island almost always belongs in the dry kitchen. The kitchen layout types guide compares islands, peninsulas and the common L and U layouts.

Practical limits to check before you commit

  • Walkways. Measure the clear space on every side with drawers and appliance doors open. An island that leaves a tight walkway is the most common regret.
  • Services. A sink or hob means running water, waste or power across the floor. That is easiest during a full renovation and needs the plumbing or electrical trade, not just the carpenter.
  • Smoke and smell. A hob on an island in an open kitchen needs a hood or extraction plan, or the cooking smell spreads into the living area.
  • Seating overhang. A worktop that sticks out for stools needs hidden brackets or legs under it, especially with a heavy stone top.
  • Lighting. Pendants over an island need a ceiling point in the right place; the pendant light guide explains how high to hang them so they do not block the view.

What these kitchen island designs cost

Island prices follow the type. ClickBina's kitchen island cost guide puts a portable trolley at RM800 – RM3,000, a fixed base-cabinet island with no plumbing or electrical at RM5,000 – RM15,000, and a full custom island with a quartz or stone top, seating and a sink or hob at RM18,000 – RM40,000+ in the Klang Valley.

The same guide's breakdown by configuration shows how features move the price: an island with a seating overhang at RM8,000 – RM15,000, with a built-in induction hob at RM12,000 – RM22,000, with a sink at RM14,000 – RM25,000, and a full custom waterfall quartz island at RM20,000 – RM40,000+. The top is a big part of the total; the kitchen countertop guide compares the materials.

A site visit to measure is RM150, waived if you go ahead with the job.

Common Questions

Is my kitchen big enough for an island?
Measure the clear walkway on every side of where the island would go, with cabinet and appliance doors open. If one side becomes tight, a peninsula or a mobile trolley usually works better than a full island.
Should I put the sink or the hob on the island?
Only if you want to face the room while you work and you are renovating anyway. Both need services run across the floor, and a hob also needs a hood or extraction plan. A plain island is simpler and more useful as a prep surface.
What is the difference between a kitchen island and a peninsula?
An island stands on its own with access from every side. A peninsula is joined to the end of a cabinet run, so it needs less floor space and suits smaller condo kitchens.
Which top is most practical for a kitchen island?
Engineered quartz is the usual all-rounder because it is non-porous and hard-wearing. Sintered stone takes heat well, laminate keeps the cost down, and butcher-block timber looks warm but needs regular oiling.
How much does a kitchen island cost in Malaysia?
ClickBina's kitchen island cost guide puts a portable trolley at RM800 – RM3,000, a fixed base-cabinet island at RM5,000 – RM15,000 and a full custom island at RM18,000 – RM40,000+ in the Klang Valley.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your island is designed and quoted to your own kitchen, walkways and storage needs.
