Illustrative concept design: bright scandinavian kitchen with white slab cabinets, a light oak worktop and open oak wall shelves, beside a round oak dining table with white chairs

A Scandinavian kitchen is built around light: white or soft-coloured slab doors, light oak or birch, simple handles and a few open shelves, with a plant and some textiles to keep it warm rather than clinical. In Malaysia the trick is making that look survive humidity and wok cooking: use wood-grain laminate rather than real oak near the sink, keep open shelves away from the hob, and put the heavy cooking in a wet kitchen behind glass. These 13 concept designs show white-and-wood, soft-colour, layout and storage ideas for condos and landed homes; use the filters below to narrow them by type or by home.

How a Scandinavian kitchen is put together

Scandinavian design came from long, dark Nordic winters, so every choice is about bouncing light around. In a kitchen that comes down to five decisions:

  • Doors. Flat slab doors in white, warm white or a soft colour such as sage or blue-grey, in a matt finish.
  • Wood. Light oak, birch or ash tones on the worktop, shelves or a few doors; usually wood-grain laminate in a humid kitchen.
  • Handles. Small oak knobs, tab pulls, finger pulls or slim black bars, simple and few.
  • Walls. White square or subway tiles, often with one or two open shelves.
  • Warmth. A plant, a woven basket, a linen blind and a globe pendant so the room is not cold.

The hub kitchen cabinet design styles guide has no Scandinavian section, and ClickBina's Scandinavian interior design guide covers the whole home; this page goes into the kitchen itself.

Making light wood last in a humid kitchen

Real oak, ash and birch are kiln-dried for drier climates and can move, stain and swell in a Malaysian kitchen. That is why most Scandinavian kitchens here use wood-grain laminate on the doors and worktop, and keep real timber to a dry-kitchen top, shelves or knobs. Near the sink, a laminate door on a moisture-resistant plywood carcass lasts longer than ordinary board; ClickBina's wood kitchen cabinet guide explains the builds, and the rubberwood guide covers the local hardwood that suits a butcher-block top.

White doors also need care: choose a wipeable matt laminate rather than a chalky paint finish, and expect the area around the hob to need regular cleaning.

The wet kitchen behind the white one

A pale Scandinavian dry kitchen is easy to keep looking fresh when the frying and wok cooking happen elsewhere. A glass sliding door with a white or black frame lets the dry kitchen borrow light from the back while holding smoke in the wet kitchen, where grey tiles, plain cabinets and a strong ducted hood do the hard work. ClickBina's wet kitchen design guide covers that room, and the condo kitchen guide shows how a glass partition fits a smaller unit.

Practical limits

  • Open shelves. Lovely in the catalogue, greasy beside a wok burner. Keep them on a wall away from the hob.
  • White grout. Pale grout behind the cooking area stains; a stain-resistant or darker grout is easier to live with.
  • Too much white. A white box with grey appliances is not Scandinavian; add wood, a plant and warm light.
  • Timber tops. Real wood needs oiling and must be dried after spills, especially around the sink.
  • Daylight. Sage, blue-grey and warm whites change with the light; test samples in your own kitchen.

What a Scandinavian kitchen costs

ClickBina's kitchen styles guide puts melamine board at RM180 – RM300 per foot run for budget modern and minimalist dry kitchens and laminate doors at RM280 – RM420, the band most Scandinavian kitchens use. On the wet side, the wood kitchen cabinet guide quotes the plywood guide's laminate door on a moisture-resistant plywood box at RM350 – RM600 per ft run.

The countertop guide lists quartz at RM250 – RM600 per foot run, and the tile design guide puts ceramic wall tiles at RM10 – RM18 per sq ft supplied and laid. For a whole condo kitchen, ClickBina's condo kitchen guide puts a compact refresh with new cabinets, worktop and backsplash at RM12,000 – RM22,000, and a wet-and-dry glass partition alone at RM2,000 – RM5,000. These are indicative Klang Valley figures for 2026.

Common Questions

What is a Scandinavian kitchen?
A light kitchen with white or soft-coloured slab doors, light oak or birch, simple handles, a few open shelves and warm touches such as plants, baskets and a globe pendant.
Is a Scandinavian kitchen practical in Malaysia?
Yes, if the timber look is wood-grain laminate near the sink, open shelves stay away from the hob and the wok cooking happens in a wet kitchen.
Which colours work besides white?
Pale sage, soft blue-grey and warm whites. Keep the worktop white or light oak so the kitchen stays bright.
Can I use a real wood worktop?
In a dry kitchen, yes. An oiled rubberwood or oak top needs regular oiling and must be kept dry around the sink.
How is Scandinavian different from Japandi?
Scandinavian is brighter and more playful, with white, soft colours and open shelves. Japandi is calmer and more closed, with fluted timber and very little on display.
Will a white kitchen stain easily?
White matt laminate wipes clean; the problem areas are grout and open shelves near the hob, so plan those carefully.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show Scandinavian kitchen options. Your kitchen is measured and quoted to its own walls, services and finishes.
