Main Door Design Ideas
for Landed & Condo Homes

Browse 14 main door designs by style and home, then check the material, the security, the approval rules and the cost of each.

Illustrative concept design: terrace porch with a honey-stained panelled timber main door and timber-framed glass doors beside it

A main door design comes down to three choices: the material (solid or engineered timber, steel, wrought iron or a fire-rated door set), the layout (single leaf, double leaf, pivot, sidelights, or a grille door in front) and the exposure: a door under a deep porch can be timber, while a door in sun and rain needs a tougher material. In a condo the unit door is often a fire door, so the design follows the rules. Use the filters below to narrow the 14 concept designs by style or home type.

How to choose a main door design

A main door does more jobs than any other door in the house: it keeps out rain, heat and intruders, and it is the first thing visitors see. Start with how exposed the door is and what kind of home it belongs to, then pick the look.

  • Sheltered terrace or semi-D porch: solid or engineered timber, a painted panel door, or a double-leaf pair.
  • Exposed to sun and rain: powder-coated steel with a woodgrain finish, or a composite door, which cope better than timber.
  • Security first: a steel door with multi-point locking, a grille or trellis in front, and a good lock.
  • Statement entrance: wrought iron over glass, or an oversized pivot door, on a bigger landed home.
  • Condo unit door: usually a fire-rated door set, replaced like for like with management approval.

Choose the lock with the door, not after it. A digital lock needs the right door thickness, and a fire door needs hardware that keeps its rating.

Practical limits to check before you commit

  • Condo fire doors. The unit door that opens onto the common corridor is often a fire door. A replacement must be a like-for-like rated door set, and it normally needs management approval; see fire-rated doors explained.
  • Corridor rules. Some condos restrict changes to doors and grilles that can be seen from the common corridor; check the strata renovation rules first.
  • Timber needs cover. Confirm the species and moisture content; kiln-dried timber is far less likely to warp.
  • Heavy leaves. Solid doors and pairs need enough hinges of the right grade, and a closer sized for the leaf.
  • Security is a system. The lock, the frame and any grille matter as much as the door; see the burglar-proofing checklist.

What these main door designs cost

ClickBina's main door materials guide gives indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026, door and installation: RM1,000 – RM3,500 to replace a solid timber main door, RM800 – RM1,500 for a basic non-branded steel security door, RM1,500 – RM3,000 for a mid-range powder-coated steel door, and RM3,000 – RM6,000+ for a premium wrought iron or stainless steel door. Frame repairs, new locks and making good around the door are priced on top.

A mild steel grille for the main door is RM120 – RM180 per sq ft supplied and installed, according to the grille door price guide, and adding a digital smart lock costs RM400 – RM2,500 extra. Pivot doors and fire-rated condo doors are quoted after the opening, the existing frame and the approval needed have been checked.

Common Questions

Timber or steel: which main door is better for a Malaysian home?
It depends on exposure. Timber suits a door under a deep porch and can be refinished. A powder-coated steel door copes better with sun, rain and security needs, and a woodgrain finish keeps a timber look.
Can I change my condo main door to a timber door?
Usually only to another fire-rated door set, like for like, with management approval. The unit door onto the common corridor is often a fire door, and a decorative timber door would not keep the rating.
Why does my timber main door warp or stick?
Sun and driving rain dry and wet the timber unevenly. Doors in exposed positions need refinishing more often, and kiln-dried timber is far less likely to warp than air-dried wood.
Do I need a grille door as well as a main door?
Many Klang Valley terraces have both: the solid door and a grille outside it, so air and light can come in while the house stays locked. The grille is priced separately, per sq ft.
Is a digital lock worth adding?
It removes the need for keys and suits families and rentals, at RM400 – RM2,500 extra. Check that the door thickness suits the lock, and keep the backup key and spare batteries.
Is a pivot door worth it?
It gives a striking entrance for a wide opening, but needs floor work, good weather-sealing and a sheltered position. It is quoted after measuring.
Are the designs on this page real ClickBina projects?
No. They are illustrative concept designs that show style options. Your door is measured and quoted on its own opening, frame and building rules.
