Main Entrance Door Materials
Timber, Steel, Fire-Rated or WPC? (2026)

Replacing the front door? Here is how solid timber, steel security doors, fire-rated condo doors and WPC compare on security, weather, upkeep and price.

Solid timber main door behind an open steel grille gate at a terrace house entrance

For a Malaysian landed home the main door is usually solid timber, a steel security door, or timber behind a steel grille; in a condo, the door onto the common corridor is often a fire-rated door that must be replaced like for like. Solid timber looks warm and feels solid but needs a sheltered position and periodic refinishing; steel gives the most security for the money; WPC and fibreglass shrug off water but are mainly used for bathroom doors. Indicative Klang Valley prices on our guides: a solid timber main door replacement RM1,000 – RM3,500, a basic steel security door RM800 – RM1,500 and a mid-range powder-coated steel door RM1,500 – RM3,000. Choose by exposure, security and building rules, then by looks.

What a main door has to do

A main door does more jobs than any other door in the house. It has to keep people out, keep rain out, survive afternoon sun, carry a heavy lock, open thousands of times a year without sagging, and make the first impression of the house. In a condo it may also have to hold back fire and smoke from the corridor.

No material wins on every one of those. That is why so many terrace houses in the Klang Valley have two layers at the entrance: a solid door that looks good and seals the house, and a grille or steel gate in front of it that does most of the security work. Deciding which layer does which job is the real decision; the material follows from it.

WPC / fibreglassDoes not swell or rot; low maintenanceLess common as a main door; check the lock and frame strengthWet or very exposed positions, back doors

Most people end up choosing between two combinations: a timber door with a steel grille in front, or a steel security door on its own. Our doors and windows guide covers the other doors in the house.

Solid timber: the look, and the upkeep

Solid timber is still the default for landed homes because nothing else looks quite like it. The catch is movement. Timber takes up moisture in the wet season and dries out in the heat, and a door that faces the afternoon sun or catches driving rain will warp, crack or stick sooner. Our doors guide advises confirming the species and moisture content for a solid timber main door, since kiln-dried timber is far less likely to warp than air-dried wood.

A heavy leaf also works its hinges loose. Our hinges and closers guide explains why solid timber main doors need enough hinges of the right grade, fixed into sound timber, rather than longer screws into a crumbling hole. Plan to refinish the outside face regularly; our wood finishes guide compares the coatings.

Steel security doors

A steel security door is a steel leaf in a steel frame, usually powder-coated and fitted with a multi-point lock that throws bolts into the frame at several places. It is the choice when security comes first, or when the entrance is exposed and a timber door would suffer.

The frame matters as much as the leaf. A strong door in a weak frame is only as strong as the frame fixings, which is why our security door cost guide lists frame reinforcement, a steel frame bolted to the reinforced concrete column, as a separate line. Ask how the frame is fixed, what gauge the leaf is, how many locking points it has and what finish protects it from rust.

Condo doors: often a fire door first

In a condo or apartment the door that opens onto the common corridor is not simply your choice. Our fire-rated door guide explains that, in practice, the main door of many condo and apartment units, the one that opens onto the common corridor, is a fire door. On a rated door the hardware and frame are part of what the rating depends on, so a replacement must be a like-for-like certified door, not a heavier-looking decorative timber door.

The door also faces common property and forms part of the building’s appearance, so replacing it normally needs management approval under the house rules. Read our strata renovation rules guide before ordering, and get the approval in writing.

WPC and fibreglass doors

Wood-plastic composite (WPC) and fibreglass doors do not swell, rot or attract termites, which is why they have become the standard for bathrooms. Our doors guide prices a WPC or fibreglass bathroom door at RM400 – RM900. As a main door they are less common: before choosing one for the entrance, check that the leaf and frame are made to take a proper main-door lockset and that the surface finish is rated for outdoor sun.

The grille in front of the door

A steel grille or grille gate in front of the main door lets air and light in while the house stays locked, and it takes most of the burden of resisting forced entry. That lets you choose the solid door mainly for looks and weather sealing. The trade-off is that the grille becomes the part a burglar attacks first, so its lock, hinges and fixings deserve the same attention as the door’s.

Sun, rain and which way the door faces

The same door can last a lifetime in one house and fail in a few years in another, and the difference is usually exposure. A door under a deep porch roof, facing away from the afternoon sun, is an easy life for timber. A door flush with the façade, facing west, with no overhang, is a hard life for any material.

  • Exposed and west-facing: steel, WPC or a well-protected engineered door, or add a canopy.
  • Sheltered under a porch: solid or engineered timber performs well with regular refinishing.
  • Rain driving under the door: fix the threshold and seals; our door seal guide covers bottom seals and weatherstrips.

Locks and hardware

Choose the lock with the door, not after it. A mortise lock needs a pocket cut into the edge of the leaf; a digital lock needs the right door thickness and a leaf that can take its body; a fire door needs hardware that keeps its rating. Our locksmith guide covers lock types and replacement. Heavy doors also need good hinges and, where you want the door to close itself, a closer sized for the leaf.

A fire-rated condo door is priced as a certified door set and depends on the rating and the approval your management requires, so it is quoted after the existing door and frame have been checked.

Common Questions

What is the best material for a main door in Malaysia?
It depends on exposure and security. Solid or engineered timber suits a sheltered entrance and looks the part; steel security doors give the most protection for the money and handle exposed positions; condo corridor doors are often fire-rated and must stay that way.
Is a solid wood main door or a steel door more secure?
A steel security door with a multi-point lock in a properly fixed frame resists forced entry better. Many landed homes get similar protection by keeping a timber door and adding a steel grille or gate in front of it.
How much does a new main door cost?
Indicative Klang Valley prices on our guides: a solid timber main door replacement RM1,000 – RM3,500, a basic steel security door RM800 – RM1,500, and a mid-range powder-coated steel door RM1,500 – RM3,000.
Can I change my condo main door to a timber door?
Only with management approval, and often only to another fire-rated door. The main door of many condo units opens onto the common corridor and is a fire door, so a replacement must be a like-for-like certified door.
Why does my timber main door warp or stick?
Timber takes up moisture in the wet season and dries in the heat, especially when the door faces the sun or rain. Kiln-dried timber, a sheltered position, good hinges and regular refinishing all reduce it.
Is a WPC door suitable as a main door?
WPC does not swell or rot, so it is the standard for bathrooms. As a main door it is less common; check that the leaf and frame can take a proper main-door lock and that the finish is rated for outdoor sun.
Do I need a grille if I have a steel security door?
Not for security alone, but many owners keep one so the door can stay open for air and light while the house is locked. If you rely on a grille, give its lock, hinges and fixings the same attention as the door.
