Fibrous Plaster Ceiling vs Gypsum Board
What Each Is, How to Tell Them Apart & Repair (2026)

Old cast plaster or modern plasterboard? How the two ceiling materials differ, and what that means when one cracks, sags or gets wet.

Ornate cast plaster cornice and ceiling rose on a high ceiling in an older Malaysian home

Fibrous plaster is plaster cast over a fabric backing such as jute or canvas, made in a workshop and fixed in place; gypsum plasterboard is a factory-made gypsum core between paper facings, screwed to a frame and taped at the joints. Fibrous plaster is heavier and is now used mostly for cornices, mouldings and period ceilings; flat ceilings in most Malaysian homes today are gypsum board. On ClickBina's guides a new flat gypsum ceiling is RM6 – RM10 per sq ft and an ornate fibrous plaster cornice RM18 – RM40+ per linear ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

What fibrous plaster is

Plasterers call fibrous plaster “stick and rag”, which describes it well: plaster laid on a backing of fabric, traditionally canvas, stretched on timber. ClickBina's cornice guide describes the cast cornices used today as cast plaster with jute reinforcement. The fabric holds the plaster together, so a thin cast can span a gap or carry a deep profile without cracking apart.

Because it is cast in a mould, fibrous plaster is the natural choice for shapes: ornate cornices, ceiling roses, column casings and enriched panels. These are made in a workshop and then fixed in position on site, rather than formed on the ceiling.

What gypsum plasterboard is

Gypsum plasterboard, also called drywall, wallboard or simply “siling kapur” in many Malaysian quotes, is a flat factory board: a gypsum core between paper facings. Sheets are screwed to a metal or timber frame, and the joints are covered with tape and joint compound, then skimmed and painted so the ceiling reads as one smooth surface.

ClickBina's ceiling board price per sheet guide explains that “siling kapur” can mean either small boards in a visible grid or large jointed plasterboard sheets, and how each is bought and replaced.

Neither material likes water. Plain gypsum board softens and sags once it gets wet, and its paper facing can feed mould; ClickBina's BM guide to wet plaster ceilings notes that older non-gypsum plaster is a little more tolerant, but the rule is the same: fix the leak first.

How to tell which ceiling you have

  • Look at a broken edge or an access hole: paper layers on both faces mean gypsum board; strands of fabric in the plaster point to fibrous plaster.
  • Check for a grid: straight lines in a regular pattern usually mean small grid boards, not one jointed ceiling.
  • Feel the weight: a loose fibrous piece is noticeably heavier than gypsum of a similar size.
  • Look at the decoration: deep, crisp ornate cornices and roses are usually cast fibrous work.

Old ceiling boards should be checked before anyone cuts or sands them, because some older boards contain asbestos; the ceiling board price per sheet guide explains what to look for and why to test first.

Water, sagging and mould

A water stain on either ceiling is a symptom, not the problem. Find and fix the source first: a roof leak, a bathroom above, an aircon drain or a pipe. ClickBina's ceiling water stains guide walks through the usual causes.

Once dry, a small stain on sound board can be sealed and repainted. A board that has sagged, crumbled or grown mould is replaced, because wet gypsum does not regain its strength. Heavy fibrous pieces that have come loose need proper support before anyone works under them; ClickBina's guide to why ceilings fall explains how hangers and fixings fail.

Repair in kind or replace?

SituationUsual approach
Hairline or joint crack on gypsumRe-tape or fill the joint and repaint
Small stain, board dry and firmSeal the stain and repaint
Sagging or soft gypsum sectionRe-support and re-board that section
Damaged length of fibrous corniceCast a matching piece, or replace the run with a similar profile
Whole old fibrous flat ceiling failingUsually replaced with a new framed gypsum ceiling

Matching an old ornate fibrous profile means taking a mould from a sound piece, which suits heritage or period homes where the detail matters. For an ordinary flat ceiling, a new gypsum ceiling on a proper frame is the usual answer, with a new cornice chosen to suit the room.

Fibrous cornices on a gypsum ceiling

Many homes now combine the two: a flat gypsum ceiling with a cast fibrous cornice or rose for the decoration. That gives a smooth, easy-to-repair ceiling plus the deep classical profile only casting can give. Deep ornate casts suit high ceilings and formal rooms; under a low ceiling they can look heavy. ClickBina's modern classic interior design guide shows how cornices fit a classic scheme, and the ceiling painting guide covers painting the cornice with the ceiling.

Which to choose for a renovation

  • Flat ceilings, downlights, L-box or cove lighting: gypsum board on a frame.
  • Classic cornices, roses and mouldings: cast fibrous plaster, sized to the ceiling height.
  • Heritage or period home: repair fibrous work in kind where the detail is worth keeping.
  • Wet areas: neither plain gypsum nor fibrous plaster; use moisture-resistant or cement board.

Common Questions

What is a fibrous plaster ceiling?
Plaster cast over a fabric backing such as jute or canvas, made in a workshop and fixed in place. It is used mostly for cornices and period ceilings.
Is fibrous plaster the same as gypsum board?
No. Gypsum board is a gypsum core between paper facings, screwed to a frame and taped. Fibrous plaster is cast plaster on fabric.
How can I tell if my ceiling is fibrous plaster?
Look at a broken edge or access hole: paper facings mean gypsum board, fabric strands mean fibrous plaster. Test old boards for asbestos before cutting.
Is fibrous plaster heavier than gypsum board?
Yes, cast fibrous pieces are heavier, which is why loose ones need proper support before anyone works under them.
Can a fibrous plaster cornice be repaired?
Often, by casting a matching piece from a sound section, or by replacing the run with a similar profile.
How much does a fibrous plaster cornice cost?
On ClickBina's guides an ornate fibrous plaster cornice is RM18–RM40+ per linear ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Should I replace an old fibrous ceiling with gypsum?
For an ordinary flat ceiling that is failing, usually yes; keep or repair fibrous work where the decoration is worth it.
