Two ways to stop a window being a display case. Here is how film and frosted glass differ, where each one works best, and what they cost.

Frosted window film is a self-adhesive layer stuck onto existing clear glass; frosted glass is glass that has been acid-etched or sandblasted so the privacy is part of the pane. Film is the quicker, cheaper and reversible way to add privacy to a window, partition or cabinet door you already have. Frosted glass is the better choice when the glass is being replaced anyway, in a shower or other wet, heavily cleaned spot, or where you want the finish to last the life of the pane. On our guides, privacy film is RM8–RM20 per sq ft against a RM20–RM80 per sq ft premium for frosted glass.
Both options do the same job: they let light through while blurring the view, so a bathroom window, a glass partition or a street-facing window stops being a display case. The difference is where the frosting lives.
Frosted film is a thin plastic layer with an adhesive back. It is cut to size and smoothed onto the inside face of the glass you already have. It can be a plain frosted sheet, a band at eye level, a pattern or a printed design, and it can be peeled off later.
Frosted glass has had its surface treated, usually by acid-etching or sandblasting, so the translucent finish is in the glass itself. There is nothing to peel, lift or yellow, but the only way to change it is to change the pane.
| Point | Frosted film | Frosted glass |
|---|---|---|
| How it is done | Adhesive film applied to existing glass | Surface of the pane etched or sandblasted |
| Disruption | Applied in place; glass stays | Pane replaced, or ordered frosted from the start |
| Reversible? | Yes; film can be peeled off | No; change means a new pane |
| Designs | Plain, bands, patterns, printed logos | Plain or patterned; custom designs cost more |
| Durability | Edges can lift; adhesive can yellow with age | Finish lasts as long as the glass |
| Wet areas | Edges exposed to water and scrubbing | Suited to showers when the glass is tempered |
| Best for | Rentals, existing windows, partitions, cabinet doors | New builds, full replacements, showers |
Frosted film is the most common privacy fix for glass that is already installed. It suits a condo bathroom window facing the next block, a ground-floor window on a terrace row, the glass panels of an office meeting room, or glass cabinet doors that show more clutter than you would like. Because it goes onto the inside face, the glass stays smooth and easy to clean on the outside.
Our tinting guide notes that frosted films typically last 3–7 years before adhesive yellowing becomes visible, with better vinyl-based films lasting longer. The edges are the weak point: where a film is scrubbed, splashed or picked at, it lifts first. A film that is trimmed neatly a little short of the frame and applied on clean glass lasts noticeably longer than one pushed hard into the corners.
Film also comes in more than a plain frost. Graduated films fade from clear to frosted, dot and line patterns keep some view out, and printed films can carry a logo or a feature pattern. For offices, a band of film at eye level on a glass wall also makes the glass visible so people do not walk into it.
Frosted glass is made, not added. Acid-etched glass has an even, silky finish; sandblasted glass can be masked to create patterns, clear stripes or lettering. Because the finish is part of the pane, there are no edges to lift and nothing to yellow.
Two practical points. First, the etched side is slightly rough, so it is usually installed facing the inside of a shower or room, and it shows greasy fingerprints until wiped. Second, frosted glass is still glass: in a door, a shower or anywhere a person could fall against it, it must be safety glass. Our glass guides are clear that any door or shower application should be tempered frosted glass, not ordinary annealed glass with a frosted finish.
A common surprise is reflective or mirror film. It gives privacy by day because the outside is brighter than the inside, but at night, with the lights on indoors, the effect reverses and people outside can see in. If the goal is privacy after dark, you need a frosted or opaque effect, or blinds and curtains as well; our curtains and blinds guide covers those.
Frosting also spreads light rather than blocking it. Silhouettes can still show through when there is a bright light directly behind someone. For a bathroom window at eye level from a neighbour, test a sample at night before committing to the whole window.
Frosted film is a privacy product first. Some frosted films also cut glare and a little heat, but if heat is the main complaint, a solar-control tint is the product for that job, and a frosted film is not a substitute. It is also worth asking the film supplier whether a particular film suits the glass it is going onto, especially large sunny panes, tinted glass or double glazing, before it is applied.
These are indicative Klang Valley ranges for 2026, quoted from the ClickBina guides named in the sources section. Two of our guides price film slightly differently: plain decorative film on a tinting job at the low end, and privacy film on partition glass higher.
| Option | Indicative price | Source guide |
|---|---|---|
| Decorative / frosted film | RM4 – RM10 per sq ft | Window tinting cost guide |
| Frosted or decorative privacy film on glass partitions | RM8–RM20 per sq ft | Glass partition cost guide |
| Frosted glass premium over clear | RM20–RM80 per sq ft | Glass partition cost guide |
| Frosted tempered glass, 8 mm (supply) | RM22–RM35 per sq ft | Glass types guide |
