Gate Materials Compared
Mild Steel, Galvanised, Aluminium or Stainless

Choosing a new main gate? Here is how mild steel, galvanised steel, aluminium and stainless steel compare on rust, weight, upkeep and cost in Malaysian conditions.

Mild steel and aluminium gates side by side at a terrace house entrance, with a rust spot at a weld

For a Malaysian main gate, powder-coated mild steel is the cheapest but needs repainting; galvanised steel is the budget upgrade; aluminium does not rust and is far lighter; stainless steel (SS304) is the premium option. The autogate cost guide on this site puts the premium over mild steel at about 10–20% for galvanised, 20–40% for aluminium and 40–80% for stainless steel, and prices two 12 ft mild steel gate leaves at RM1,800 in its worked example. Why the gate material matters more than the design

A main gate is the largest piece of metalwork on most Malaysian houses, and it lives outdoors in heat, humidity and heavy rain. The design decides how it looks on the first day; the material decides how it looks after five monsoon seasons, how heavy it is on the hinges or rollers, and how much upkeep it asks for. Four materials cover almost every residential gate in the Klang Valley: mild steel, galvanised steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Wrought-iron style gates are usually mild steel with ornamental work.

The choice is really between paying more at the start or paying in maintenance later. The autogate cost guide on this site puts it plainly: aluminium and stainless steel cost 20–80% more than mild steel, but require far less maintenance over a 10–15 year lifespan.

The four materials side by side

This comparison is quoted from the gate-panel material table in the autogate cost guide on this site (indicative Klang Valley, 2026). The cost column is the premium over a powder-coated mild steel gate of the same size and design:

Mild steel: cheapest, heaviest, and only as good as its coating

Mild steel is what most Malaysian gates and grilles are made of, because it is cheap, strong and easy for any fabricator to cut and weld. Its weakness is simple: it rusts as soon as water reaches bare metal. The powder coat or paint is the only thing protecting it, so every chip, scratch from a car door or cracked weld is a starting point.

How long that protection lasts depends on the coating and the upkeep. In the fencing cost guide’s material table, painted mild steel rusts in 3–5 years if the paint fails and lasts 10–15 years with repainting, while powder-coated mild steel lasts 15–20 years if the coating stays undamaged. The metal grille cost guide adds that in high-humidity or salt-air environments, mild steel grilles rust at weld points within 2–3 years.

Mild steel is still a sensible choice for a budget gate, a rental property, or a gate that will be repainted on a schedule. Just budget for that schedule from the start.

Galvanised steel: the budget upgrade

Galvanised steel is steel with a zinc coating. The zinc protects the steel underneath, so a scratch does not immediately turn into a rust spot the way it does on painted mild steel. That is why the autogate guide lists it as the budget upgrade from mild steel, at about 10–20% more.

Two points to check on a galvanised gate. First, is the whole gate galvanised after fabrication, or were galvanised tubes welded together? Welding burns the zinc off at the joint, and those welds need their own protection. Second, most homeowners want a colour, so a galvanised gate is usually powder-coated on top; ask how the coating is prepared so it grips the zinc and does not peel.

Aluminium: light, does not rust, easier on the motor

Aluminium does not rust. It is also far lighter than steel: the autogate guide notes that aluminium is about one-third the density of steel (roughly 2.7 vs 7.85 g/cm³), so an aluminium leaf of similar size puts far less load on the hinges, the pillar and the motor. For an autogate, that means less strain on the operator over its life.

The trade-offs are cost, at about 20–40% over mild steel for a gate, and strength. Aluminium sections are generally thicker for the same stiffness, and a thin aluminium gate can dent or flex if a car nudges it. Ask for the section sizes on the quotation, not just the word “aluminium”.

For houses near the sea, such as Port Klang and Klang town, or in areas prone to flooding, the autogate guide says aluminium or galvanised steel is strongly preferred over mild steel because of salt air and moisture.

Stainless steel: premium, and the grade matters

Stainless steel is the premium option, at about 40–80% over mild steel for a gate, with excellent rust resistance and very low upkeep. It is heavy, like mild steel, so the hinges, pillar and motor must be sized for it.

“Stainless” is not one material. The table on this page is for SS304, the grade the autogate guide lists. Lower grades cost less and can show rust spots in Malaysian humidity, so ask for the grade in writing on the quotation and on the invoice. The autogate guide notes that a gate panel in aluminium or stainless steel can last the lifetime of the house.

Weight, the motor and the pillar

Material choice changes more than rust. A heavier leaf loads the hinges and the pillar on a swing gate, and the rollers and track on a sliding gate. It also decides how large the autogate motor needs to be. The autogate motor replacement guide warns that solid infill also adds weight the original operator may never have been sized for; the same applies when a light gate is swapped for a heavy one.

  • Swing gates: check the pillar is sound before hanging a heavier leaf. A cracked or leaning pillar needs repair first.
  • Sliding gates: a heavier gate needs rollers and a track rated for it, and the track must stay clean.
  • Existing autogate: tell the fabricator which motor you have, so the new leaf does not overload it. The autogate motor replacement guide explains how operators are sized.

Matching the fence matters too. If the front fence is powder-coated mild steel, a stainless gate will look different from it. The fencing cost guide compares fence materials and prices per metre, and the grille and fence cost calculator gives a rough figure for a whole frontage.

What a gate costs: the worked example

Gate prices depend on width, design and material, so a quote is always measured. As one reference point, the autogate cost guide’s worked example prices the two leaves of a 12 ft double-leaf, powder-coated mild steel swing gate of mid-range design at RM1,800, before the motor and installation. Apply the premiums in the table above for other materials.

Keeping any gate from rusting

  • Touch up chips on mild steel straight away. The autogate repair guide is blunt: rust spots need touching up immediately, because once a leaf is structurally rusted no motor repair will save it.
  • Avoid hollow-section mild steel posts in direct soil contact; they rust from the inside out.
  • Keep the bottom rail and the track clear of wet leaves and sand.
  • Wash salt and dust off after the dry spells, especially near the coast.
  • Where the gate meets a fence or grille, the same care applies to the whole frontage. For fences with climbing concerns, see anti-climb fencing.

What the gate quotation should say

  • Material and grade: mild steel, galvanised (and whether galvanised after fabrication), aluminium, or stainless steel with its grade.
  • Section sizes for the frame and the infill, not just the material name.
  • Coating: powder coat or paint, the colour, and the preparation underneath.
  • Gate type and width: swing, sliding or folding, single or double leaf.
  • Hinges, rollers, track and lock, and whether they match the gate’s weight.
  • Motor compatibility if an autogate is fitted or planned.
  • Pillar and footing work if the pillar needs repair.

Common Questions

Which gate material costs the least?
Powder-coated mild steel. In the autogate cost guide’s worked example, the two leaves of a 12 ft double-leaf mild steel swing gate come to RM1,800 before the motor. Other materials cost more: galvanised about 10–20%, aluminium about 20–40% and stainless steel (SS304) about 40–80% over mild steel.
Is an aluminium gate better than a mild steel gate?
It does not rust and it is much lighter, which is easier on the hinges, pillar and autogate motor. It costs about 20–40% more and needs adequate section sizes to stay stiff. Mild steel is cheaper but needs repainting.
How long does a mild steel gate last before rusting?
It depends on the coating. The fencing cost guide puts painted mild steel at rust in 3–5 years if the paint fails, and powder-coated mild steel at 15–20 years if the coating stays undamaged.
Is galvanised steel worth it for a gate?
For a budget gate that should need less upkeep, usually yes. The zinc coating protects scratches, and the cost is about 10–20% more than mild steel. Check how the welds are protected.
Which gate material suits a house near the sea?
Aluminium or galvanised steel. Salt air and moisture attack mild steel, and mild steel grilles in salt air can rust at weld points within 2–3 years.
Does a heavier gate need a bigger autogate motor?
Yes. Weight loads the hinges, pillar, rollers and motor. Tell the fabricator which motor you have before changing to a heavier material.
