Tiling Over Existing Tiles
Without Hacking: When It Works (2026)

Want new tiles without the hacking noise, dust and debris? Here is when laying over the old tiles works, and when it only hides a problem.

New porcelain tile being laid over old ceramic floor tiles in a condo living room

You can lay new tiles directly over old tiles, without hacking, when the old tiles are firmly bonded, flat, dry and not leaking, and when the extra height will not foul doors, thresholds or the floor trap. It saves the hacking and debris line and much of the dust. It is the wrong answer on a leaking bathroom, balcony or wet-kitchen floor, where a second layer traps the water and doubles the next hacking bill. ClickBina's floor tile guide puts tiling on an existing substrate at RM12 – RM30 per sq ft supplied and laid, and hacking the old floor at a further RM1.50 – RM3 per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

What tiling over tiles actually means

Tile-on-tile, overlay tiling or “no-hack” tiling all describe the same job: the old tiles stay where they are and become the base for the new ones. The tiler cleans and prepares the old surface, spreads an adhesive made for bonding to a dense, glazed surface, and sets the new tiles on top. Nothing is broken out, so there is no hacking noise, far less dust and no debris to carry down the lift or out through the house.

It is a real, sound technique on the right surface. The trouble is that it is also the easiest way to hide a problem. The new layer is only as good as the old one underneath it, so the whole decision comes down to checking the old tiles honestly before anyone opens a bag of adhesive.

When it works, and when it does not

Our floor tile replacement cost guide explains why two quotations for the same floor can be far apart: one has priced hacking and disposal, the other assumes the new tiles go over the existing floor.

The tap test: is the old floor sound?

Before anything else, tap every old tile with the handle of a screwdriver or a small rubber mallet. A firmly bonded tile gives a sharp, solid knock. A hollow one sounds drummy, because the mortar or adhesive behind it has let go. Mark each hollow tile with tape. A few scattered hollow tiles can be lifted and re-fixed first; whole areas that sound hollow, cracks that run in a line across several tiles, or tiles that have already lifted mean the base is moving, and a new layer on top will fail the same way.

Our guide to popped and hollow floor tiles explains what causes tiles to debond, and the wall panels over tiles guide uses the same tap test before anything is fixed to an old tiled wall.

The wet-area trap: never tile over a leak

The most common bad “fix” in Malaysian homes is a leaking bathroom or balcony that gets a new layer of tiles on top. It looks new for a while, but tiles and grout are not the waterproofing; the membrane underneath is. Water keeps finding its way down, now collects between two tile beds, and eventually stains the ceiling below again. When it does, both layers have to be hacked off, so you pay for demolition twice.

If a wet floor already leaks, fix the waterproofing first. ClickBina's published ranges put a non-hacking bathroom re-waterproof, a surface system over the existing tiles, at RM1,500 – RM3,500, and a full hack and new membrane at RM4,500 – RM9,000 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). Our bathroom waterproofing guide explains how to tell which route fits.

Height, doors and the floor trap

A second layer of tiles raises the floor. ClickBina's flooring guide puts new tile over old tile at 10–12 mm of extra height, which does not sound like much until it meets a door. Interior doors are commonly hung with about 5 mm of clearance above the floor, so a door that swings over the new tiles often has to be trimmed at the bottom. Check these points before you commit:

  • Doors: every door that swings over the new floor, including wardrobe and cabinet doors at floor level.
  • Thresholds: where the new floor meets a room you are not tiling, you need a neat transition strip or a small step.
  • Floor traps: the trap grating must be raised to the new level so water still runs into it.
  • Sliding tracks and built-ins: kitchen plinths, wardrobes and sliding-door tracks may sit too low afterwards.
  • Skirting: old skirting tiles usually come off, or the new floor will look sunk into them.

How a tile-over-tile job should be prepared

  1. Tap test every tile, then lift and re-fix hollow ones; replace cracked ones.
  2. Degrease and clean thoroughly; kitchen and bathroom tiles carry films that stop adhesion.
  3. Roughen or prime the glazed face as the adhesive maker specifies, so the new adhesive can grip.
  4. Use an adhesive the maker states is suitable for tiling over existing tiles; ordinary sand-cement will not bond to glaze.
  5. Plan the layout so new grout joints do not sit right over old ones or over movement joints.
  6. Keep movement joints at walls and across large areas, as on any tiled floor.

Large tiles need a flat base and full adhesive cover; our large-format tile installation guide explains lippage and back-buttering, which matter even more over an old floor.

Tiling over old wall tiles

Walls are often easier than floors, because they carry no foot traffic and have no door to clear. Kitchen backsplashes and dated bathroom walls are the usual candidates. The checks change a little: the wall has to carry the weight of two layers, so any tiles that sound hollow must be dealt with first, and the new layer sits proud of the old one around sockets, switches, window frames and the edge of the tiled area. Socket and switch plates usually need spacers or re-setting, and the top and side edges need a trim.

Inside a shower, the same wet-area rule applies: tiling over old wall tiles does nothing for a failed membrane, and water behind the old tiles stays there.

On top of the tiling, allow for door trimming, a raised floor trap and threshold strips where they apply.

Other no-hack options for an old tiled floor

If the height, the weight or the look of new tiles does not suit, several finishes can also go over sound old tiles. Vinyl or SPC planks are listed at RM6 – RM14 per sq ft installed in the same floor tile guide and click together as a floating floor; our SPC flooring guide covers them. Epoxy flake coatings and microcement are thinner still, and our epoxy flake versus re-tiling guide compares a coating with a new tiled floor in a toilet.

What the quotation should say

  • Whether the job is over the old tiles or includes hacking, written as separate lines.
  • How hollow tiles found in the tap test will be handled and priced.
  • The adhesive product and the surface preparation the maker requires.
  • Tile grade and size, and who supplies the tiles.
  • Door trimming, threshold strips, trap raising and skirting, included or excluded.
  • What happens if the old floor turns out to be unsound once work starts.

Common Questions

Can you lay new tiles over old tiles?
Yes, when the old tiles are firmly bonded, flat, dry and not leaking, and the extra height suits the doors, thresholds and floor trap. Tap-test every tile first.
Is tiling over tiles cheaper than hacking?
It saves the hacking and disposal line, which ClickBina's floor tile guide puts at RM1.50–RM3 per sq ft on top of RM12–RM30 per sq ft for supply and lay (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
How much higher will the floor be?
ClickBina's flooring guide puts new tile over old tile at 10–12 mm of extra height, so doors and thresholds often need adjusting.
Can I tile over my bathroom floor to stop a leak?
No. Tiles are not the waterproofing. A new layer traps water between the two tile beds and the leak returns; fix the membrane first.
What adhesive is used for tile over tile?
One the maker states is suitable for bonding to existing tiles, applied after degreasing and the preparation the maker specifies. Plain sand-cement does not grip a glazed surface.
Can I tile over old wall tiles?
Often, if they are firmly bonded. Deal with hollow tiles, plan trims at the edges and reset socket and switch plates for the new thickness.
What if some old tiles sound hollow?
Lift and re-fix scattered ones first. If whole areas are hollow or cracked in a line, the base is moving and it is usually better to hack and start again.
