Solid Surface Countertops
Corian, Seamless Joins & Cost (2026)

Want a seamless top with a moulded sink? Here is how solid surface compares with quartz and granite, and where it belongs in a Malaysian kitchen.

Seamless white solid surface kitchen countertop with an integrated moulded sink

Solid surface is a man-made countertop material of acrylic resin and mineral filler, sold under names such as Corian. Its strengths are joins you cannot see, sinks moulded into the top and scratches that sand out; its weakness is heat, so a hot wok needs a trivet. ClickBina's countertop guide puts it at RM150 – RM350 per foot run (indicative 2026, Klang Valley), below quartz and sintered stone. It suits dry kitchens, vanities and curved counters better than the wok station of a wet kitchen.

What solid surface actually is

Solid surface is a cast sheet of resin and mineral powder. Corian, the original brand, is described as acrylic polymer with alumina trihydrate, a filler made from bauxite. The colour and pattern run through the full thickness of the sheet, which is where the name comes from: cut it anywhere and the inside looks like the face.

That single fact explains most of its behaviour. There is no printed layer to wear through, so a worn or scratched area can be sanded and polished back to the same colour. Pieces can be glued with a colour-matched adhesive and polished until the join disappears. And because it is a plastic-based material, it softens with heat, which is both how curved shapes are made and why a hot pan can mark it.

The table is the whole argument in one view: solid surface is the cheapest of the non-laminate tops and the only one you can repair to an invisible finish, but it is the least heat-tolerant of the four.

Seamless joins and integrated sinks

A stone top longer than a slab has a visible seam, and an L-shape usually has one at the corner. Solid surface is joined with its own colour-matched two-part adhesive, then sanded and polished, so a long L or U can read as one continuous piece. The same trick lets a fabricator bond a solid surface sink or basin under the top so there is no rim or silicone line for grime to collect in.

That is the main reason people choose it. If you want a sink bowl that flows into the counter, or a long breakfast counter with no line across it, solid surface does it for less than stone. Our kitchen sink and tap guide covers the undermount and topmount alternatives if you prefer a stainless or granite bowl.

Heat: the one rule you cannot skip

Corian's own figures put its heat resistance at up to 100°C, and the maker recommends trivets in kitchens. For comparison, engineered quartz is described as unaffected below 150 °C, and sintered stone is the heat-proof option. A wok or claypot straight off a high flame is hotter than any of those limits for the first minutes, so the habit matters more than the material.

  • Keep a trivet or a heat mat permanently beside the hob.
  • Do not rest a hot pot on the top “just for a second”.
  • Keep the hob cut-out clear of the edge of a join where heat can stress the adhesive line.
  • In a heavy-frying wet kitchen, consider granite or sintered stone at the hob and solid surface elsewhere.

Scratches, stains and repairs

Solid surface is softer than stone and it will scratch; the Corian article notes scratches are particularly noticeable on darker colours. The upside is that cuts and scratches can be abraded and buffed back to the original finish, which no quartz or sintered top allows. ClickBina's countertop guide describes light sanding with fine paper as a genuine DIY repair for minor marks.

It is non-porous, so oil, turmeric and coffee wipe off rather than soaking in, and it needs no sealing. Use a non-abrasive cream cleaner for daily care and keep scouring pads away from a gloss finish. A matt finish hides fine scratches far better than gloss, which is worth knowing before you choose.

Where it works in a Malaysian home

LocationGood fit?Why
Dry kitchen and pantry counterYesLittle direct heat; seamless look; easy to clean
Wet kitchen beside a high-output burnerUsually notHeat is its weak point; a trivet habit is essential
Bathroom vanity with moulded basinYesNo rim or silicone line around the basin
Curved counter, reception or barYesCan be heat-formed into curves
Outdoor kitchenNoChoose a UV-stable material such as sintered stone

Vanities are a natural home for it; our bathroom vanity guide prices the cabinet that sits underneath. For an outdoor bench, the sintered stone guide explains why a fired slab copes with sun.

Humidity, joints and the wet kitchen

ClickBina's countertop guide notes that laminate and solid surface can expand slightly in very humid conditions, so joints need adequate gaps where the top meets a wall, a window or a tall unit in a wet kitchen. The top itself does not swell like a board, but the cabinet under it can: a solid surface top over a particleboard sink cabinet still fails if water gets into the carcass.

Specify a moisture-resistant carcass under the sink and hob, and a sealed upstand or backsplash where the top meets the wall. Our wet and dry kitchen guide explains which zone gets which surfaces.

Thickness, edges and fabrication

Corian is made in 6, 12 and 19 mm sheets. A kitchen top is built up with a thicker front edge glued under the sheet, so the edge you see can look chunky without the whole top being solid. Because the edge is bonded and polished, a rounded or bevelled profile costs little extra, unlike stone where every profile is machine time.

Solid surface can be cut with ordinary woodworking saws, while engineered stone needs a water jet or diamond blade. That makes on-site adjustments and cut-outs simpler, and it is why curved and moulded shapes are practical. The top still needs continuous support from the cabinets below, especially over a dishwasher gap or an overhang.

Choosing a colour and finish

  • Light, speckled colours hide scratches and water marks best.
  • Dark, plain colours look dramatic but show every scratch.
  • Matt finishes are the practical choice for a kitchen; gloss suits a vanity or reception counter.
  • Marble-look patterns exist, but if the look matters most, compare them with quartz and sintered stone.
  • See a full sheet or a large sample, not a thumbnail chip, before you commit.

If the marble look is what you want, our marble vs marble-look quartz guide compares the materials that do it most convincingly.

What the quotation should say

  • The brand and colour name of the sheet, and its thickness.
  • The edge build-up and profile.
  • Every cut-out: sink, hob, tap holes, and whether the sink is integrated or undermounted.
  • Joins: where they fall, and confirmation that they are bonded and polished.
  • The upstand or backsplash strip, and how the wall junction is sealed.
  • Price per foot run and the total run measured, so you can compare like with like.

Countertops are priced separately from the cabinets, so check whether the top is in the cabinet quote or a separate line. Our compact laminate guide is the one to read if the budget is tighter still.

Common Questions

What is a solid surface countertop?
A cast sheet of acrylic or polyester resin and mineral filler, such as Corian. The colour runs right through, so joins can be polished invisible and scratches can be sanded out.
Is solid surface better than quartz?
Not better, different. Solid surface is cheaper, seamless and repairable; quartz is harder and more scratch-resistant. Both need a trivet for hot pots.
How much does a solid surface countertop cost in Malaysia?
ClickBina's countertop guide puts it at RM150–RM350 per foot run (indicative 2026, Klang Valley), before extras such as an integrated sink.
Can I put a hot pot on solid surface?
No. Corian's published heat resistance is up to 100°C and the maker recommends trivets. Keep a heat mat beside the hob.
Can solid surface scratches be repaired?
Yes. Minor scratches can be sanded with fine paper and polished; deeper damage can be cut out and patched with a matching piece.
Is solid surface suitable for a wet kitchen?
For the sink area, yes. Beside a high-output wok burner, granite or sintered stone copes better with heat.
Does solid surface need sealing?
No. It is non-porous, so spills wipe off. Use a non-abrasive cream cleaner and avoid scouring pads on gloss finishes.
