Light grazes across a ceiling and shows every joint and roller mark. Here is how to paint one that looks flat.

A plaster ceiling is painted in a matt finish, over a sealer on new skim or patched areas, with water stains blocked only after the leak is fixed, anti-mould paint in bathrooms and kitchens, and a colour that is usually white or a light tint of the walls; it is rolled in one direction towards the light so joints and roller marks do not show. ClickBina's painting cost guide puts walls plus ceiling with minor crack filling at RM3.00 – RM4.50 per sq ft (indicative 2026, Klang Valley); a site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.
A ceiling is seen from below and lit from the side by windows and wall lights, so light grazes across it and picks out every ripple, board joint and roller mark that a wall would hide. It is also rarely touched, so it does not need the washability of a hallway wall. Those two facts drive most ceiling decisions: a flat, forgiving finish, careful preparation of joints, and a method that keeps a wet edge across the whole surface.
ClickBina's painting contractor guide makes the same point: ceilings can reasonably use a more economical matte series, because they are rarely touched and matte hides unevenness.
A new plaster ceiling is a patchwork of surfaces: board face, taped joints, filled screw heads and skim coat, each absorbing paint differently. Painted straight away, the joints show through as dull or shiny bands. ClickBina's primer, sealer and undercoat guide explains that new and patched plaster needs a sealer to even out porosity and block alkali, and that skipping the first coat is the most common reason cheap paint jobs fail. Let the skim dry fully, sand lightly, dust off, seal, then apply the top coats.
Most repaints need more preparation than people expect. Wipe or vacuum off dust and cobwebs, wash any greasy kitchen ceiling with a mild degreaser, fill hairline cracks and nail pops, sand the patches flush and spot-seal them before the full coats, or they will flash through. If the old paint is flaking or chalky, scrape and seal first; new paint on a weak layer peels with it. ClickBina's bubbling and peeling paint guide explains why coats lift.
A brown ring on the ceiling is a leak symptom, not a paint problem. ClickBina's PU injection ceiling leak guide describes the usual cycle: the stain is scraped, skimmed and repainted, looks perfect for a few weeks, then bleeds back and bubbles because the water was never stopped. Find and fix the source first; ClickBina's ceiling water stain guide explains how to read the stain. Once the slab or board is dry, a stain-blocking primer stops the old mark bleeding through the new paint.
The right finish depends on the room. These are the usual choices for Malaysian ceilings:
| Room or situation | Usual finish | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Living room, bedrooms, corridors | Matt ceiling paint | Hides ripples and joints; ceilings are rarely touched |
| Bathrooms | Anti-mould or anti-fungal paint | Steam and damp air let mould colonise plain emulsion |
| Kitchens near the hob and sink | Anti-mould, wipeable finish | Grease and steam; needs occasional cleaning |
| Air-conditioned bedrooms | Anti-fungal series | Condensation near cold aircon air |
| Feature or dark ceilings | Matt, applied with extra care | Dark colours show every lap and mark |
ClickBina's anti-mould paint guide lists bathroom ceilings and kitchen ceilings near the hob and sink among the places where anti-mould paint earns its keep, and is clear that it does not fix a leak or poor ventilation.
Most ceilings are white for a reason: they bounce light back into the room and make it feel taller. ClickBina's low-ceiling guide recommends white or a very light tint of the wall colour in a matt finish, and painting the cornice the same colour as the ceiling to blur the edge. A soft pastel works well in a kids' room or a Korean-cream style home; carry the tint a little down the wall so it looks intended. A dark ceiling can look dramatic in a room with good height, such as a double-volume hall or a media room, but it lowers a normal room and shows every flaw. ClickBina's house colour palette guide helps pick colours that work together.
Paint the inside of a cove or L-box in bright white, even if the ceiling is tinted: the cove is a reflector, and a colour inside it changes the colour of the light. Paint cornices with the ceiling rather than the wall unless the design calls for a contrast. On a new feature ceiling, paint before the LED strips and fittings go in, or mask them carefully. For the design of the ceiling itself, see ClickBina's living room ceiling design guide.
Two top coats are normal; ClickBina's painting cost guide notes that a colour change from dark to light needs an extra primer coat plus more top coats.
