Pebble Wash (Washed Stone) Finish
How It Is Laid, Where It Works and How to Care for It (2026)

Thinking of pebble wash for the porch, pool deck or garden path, or fixing an old one? Here is how it is made and what to watch for.

Pebble wash, also called washed stone or exposed aggregate, is a cement finish with small pebbles mixed in; before it fully sets, the top film of cement is washed or brushed off so the stones show. It grips well when wet, hides dirt, suits porches, pool surrounds, paths and walls, and needs no tiles. Its weak points are cracks, stains in the pores and patches that are hard to match. No ClickBina guide publishes a pebble wash rate, so it is quoted after measuring; for comparison, porcelain tiles are RM18 – RM35 per sq ft supplied and laid on our guides.

What pebble wash is

Pebble wash is one of the oldest outdoor finishes in Malaysian homes: the speckled grey, beige or multicolour porch or pool deck made of thousands of small rounded stones set in cement. The stones are mixed into a cement topping, spread and levelled over a sound base, and then, at the right moment, the thin skin of cement on top is washed off with water and a brush so the stones stand slightly proud. The texture that results is what gives the finish its grip.

The same idea is used on walls, planter boxes, steps and boundary walls, where it is sometimes called granite wash or stone wash depending on the aggregate used.

Where it works, and where it does not

PlaceGood fit?Why
Car porch and driveway apronYesGrips when wet, hides tyre marks and dirt
Pool surround and garden pathsYesTextured and non-slip underfoot; stays cooler with light stones
Balconies and terraces over roomsWith careOnly over sound waterproofing; cracks let water through
External walls and planter boxesYesDurable, low-maintenance texture
Indoor living areasRarelyRough to clean and hard on bare feet and furniture
Wet kitchens and bathroomsRarelyPores hold grease and soap; hard to keep clean

Our car porch flooring guide frames the choice well: a porch floor has to grip when wet, take the load of a turning car, drain, and be repairable.

How pebble wash is laid

  1. Check and prepare the base: the slab must be sound, clean, and laid to fall towards a drain.
  2. Plan joints so cracking happens where you want it, especially on large areas.
  3. Mix the pebbles with cement to a stiff topping, sometimes with a bonding agent on the base.
  4. Spread and trowel the topping level, pressing the stones down so they are well embedded.
  5. Wait for the right set, then wash and brush off the surface cement to expose the stones evenly.
  6. Keep it damp while it cures, clean off any remaining cement haze, and seal if agreed.

Timing the wash is the skill. Wash too early and stones loosen and fall out; too late and the cement skin will not come off evenly. That is why pebble wash quality varies so much between crews.

Choosing the stones and the colour

The look depends on the stone: size, colour and whether it is river-rounded or crushed. Smaller, rounded stones feel smoother underfoot and suit pool decks and paths; mixed colours hide dirt best on a porch; a single light colour looks cleaner but shows stains sooner. Pigment can be added to the cement to warm or darken the background. Ask to see a sample panel made with the actual stones before the job starts, because a brochure never matches.

Grip, comfort and heat

Exposed stones make a textured surface that stays grippy in the rain, which is why pebble wash is popular round pools and on sloping driveways. The trade-off is comfort: coarse, angular stones are hard on bare feet and knees. For a pool deck, ask for smaller rounded stones and a lighter colour, which also stays cooler in the sun. Our anti-slip tiles guide explains how grip is rated for tiles if you are comparing the two.

Common problems and their causes

ProblemUsual causeWhat can be done
Cracks across the surfaceBase movement, no planned joints, shrinkageCut joints; fill cracks; patches will show
Stones coming looseWashed too early, weak mix or poor bondRe-set loose areas; a sealer helps hold stones
Dark stains and mould in the poresDamp, shade, leaves and oilScrub, pressure-wash carefully, then seal
White powder or blotchesEfflorescence: salts coming out of the cementUsually fades; clean and let it dry
Cement haze over the stonesSurface not washed or cleaned enoughSpecialist cleaning
Uneven, patchy lookInconsistent washing or mixesHard to fix without redoing the area

Pebble wash laid on a porch that is damp from below will keep showing salts and damp patches; our guide to water coming up through porch tiles explains the moisture problem that affects any porch finish.

Cleaning and sealing

  • Sweep leaves and soil off regularly; organic matter in the pores feeds mould.
  • Scrub with a stiff brush and a mild cleaner; wipe oil drips up before they soak in.
  • Pressure-wash with care: a strong jet held close can loosen stones.
  • A penetrating or film-forming sealer reduces staining and helps hold stones; it needs renewing over time.
  • Avoid strong acid cleaners, which attack the cement between the stones.

Repairing old pebble wash

Small cracks can be filled and loose stones re-set, but new pebble wash rarely matches old exactly, because stones and cement weather over the years. For a tired porch, the choices are to clean, repair and seal what is there; to lay a new topping over a sound base; or to hack it out and change the finish. If the old surface is cracked because the base below is sinking, fix the base first; our guide to sinking porches and aprons explains why.

Pebble wash compared with other porch finishes

Against tiles, pebble wash has no grout lines to crack or tiles to loosen, and it grips better when wet, but it is harder to clean and to patch invisibly. Against plain concrete, it looks more finished and hides dirt. Against stamped concrete, it is textured rather than patterned. Against pavers, it is one continuous surface that cannot be lifted and relaid. Choose it for grip and a natural stone look, and plan the joints and the base so it lasts.

What it costs

No ClickBina guide publishes a pebble wash rate: the area, the stone chosen, the condition of the base, joints, access and whether the old finish must be hacked out all move the price, so it is quoted after measuring. Common Questions

What is pebble wash?
A cement finish with small pebbles mixed in, washed before it fully sets so the stones show. It is also called washed stone or exposed aggregate.
Is pebble wash slippery?
No, the exposed stones give good grip when wet, which is why it is used round pools and on porches.
Is pebble wash good for a car porch?
Yes, over a sound, sloped base with planned joints. It hides dirt and grips well, but cracks are hard to patch invisibly.
Why are stones coming off my pebble wash?
Usually it was washed too early, the mix was weak, or it did not bond to the base. Loose areas can be re-set and sealed.
How do I clean pebble wash?
Sweep regularly, scrub with a stiff brush and mild cleaner, and pressure-wash carefully. Avoid strong acids.
Should pebble wash be sealed?
A sealer reduces staining and helps hold the stones. It needs renewing over time.
How much does pebble wash cost?
