Interior Paint Compared
Nippon vs Dulux vs Jotun Premium Ranges (2026)

What each brand's interior range actually claims, and how to choose by room rather than by advert.

Three opened paint tins in sage green, terracotta and off-white on a drop sheet with a wet roller tray

Nippon Paint, Dulux and Jotun all sell several interior wall paints in Malaysia, and their premium ranges are closer to each other than the advertising suggests: all are interior emulsions listed for two coats on their product pages, sold on washability, stain resistance, anti-bacterial or anti-fungal additives and, increasingly, air-quality claims. The useful comparison is not brand against brand but the right range for each room, and how the wall is prepared. ClickBina's guides put interior painting at RM2 – RM5 per sq ft for labour and paint together, or RM400 – RM900 per room (indicative 2026, Klang Valley). A site visit is RM150, waived if you go ahead.

How to compare interior paints without the marketing

Every brand gives its technologies a trademark name, which makes the shelves look more different than they are. Strip the names away and an interior wall paint is judged on a short list of things you can actually check:

  • Finish: matt, low sheen or sheen. Matt hides wall flaws; sheen wipes clean more easily.
  • Washability and stain resistance: whether marks wipe off without leaving a shiny patch.
  • Additives: anti-bacterial, anti-fungal or anti-mould claims, and what they are stated to act on.
  • Odour and air-quality claims: low odour during painting, and claims about absorbing or converting formaldehyde afterwards.
  • Coverage: the area one litre covers per coat, as printed by the maker.
  • Price per tin and how many coats the job really needs.

Where the maker publishes a figure or a claim, it is quoted below from its own Malaysian product page, linked in the sources section. Claims are the manufacturer's; this page reports them, it does not test them. For the basics of emulsion, enamel and sheen levels, start with the paint types guide.

The ranges side by side

These are interior wall ranges from each brand's Malaysian site, with what each product page says about it.

RangeFinish (maker's description)Main claims on the product pageCoverage per coat (maker)

Nippon Odour-less AirCare MattMattConverts formaldehyde into water vapour; minimal paint odour; washability; scuff and scratch resistance9–11 m² per litre
Nippon Vinilex Fresh PlusNot stated in the summarySilver Ion Technology against viruses, bacteria, mould and fungi; good washability9–11 m² per litre

Dulux EasyCleanMattKidProof+ technology so stains wipe away; anti-bacterial; Colourguard colour retentionNot quoted here

Jotun Majestic True Beauty MattMattRich even colour; easy washability; anti-bacterial and anti-fungal; low odourListed as 10.5 sq/m

Every one of these product pages lists two coats; apply them over a properly prepared and primed wall. Coverage figures are the maker's own and assume a smooth, sealed surface; a rough or porous wall takes more paint.

Nippon Paint's interior ranges

Nippon Paint positions Spot-less Plus as a stain repelling paint with a luxurious matt finish, powered by what it calls Silver Ion Technology for anti-microbial performance and AirGuard Technology that absorbs formaldehyde. Odour-less AirCare is described as an eco-friendly interior paint that converts formaldehyde into water vapour, with minimal paint odour, washability and a tougher surface against scuffs. Vinilex Fresh Plus also carries Silver Ion Technology and is sold on washability, so wall stains can be wiped or scrubbed off.

In practice the Nippon choice is mostly about smell during the job and how the room is used: a low-odour paint matters when you are painting an occupied bedroom or a nursery, and a stain-repelling finish matters on a hallway or a child's wall. The paint smell guide explains how long a freshly painted room should be aired before it is slept in.

Dulux's interior ranges

Dulux describes Pentalite as a high quality smooth matt interior paint with Hygiene+ technology against mould and fungus, and Procover+ technology for higher opacity and coverage than its regular interior paint. EasyClean is a premium matt paint with KidProof+ technology that delays stains penetrating the paint film so they wipe away, plus an anti-bacterial property and Colourguard technology to hold colour. Ambiance AirFresh is an all-in-one premium paint with a low sheen finish, PureAir Technology to reduce air pollutants, and anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-mould properties.

The Dulux line-up spreads across finishes as well as features: a low sheen finish such as AirFresh is easier to wipe than a flat matt, but it shows bumps and patching more. That matters on long corridor walls and ceilings lit from the side.

Jotun's interior range

Jotun describes Majestic True Beauty Matt as a premium acrylic paint with a smooth, elegant finish, formulated with True Colour Technology for rich, even colour and easy washability. Its product page lists anti-bacterial and anti-fungal protection, low odour, two coats on concrete or masonry, and Majestic Primer as the matching primer. Jotun's Malaysian range is smaller on the shelf than the other two, so colour choice and the local stockist often decide whether it is practical.

Reading the technology claims

Three groups of claims appear on almost every premium tin, and each deserves a sensible reading.

  • Anti-bacterial and anti-viral. These describe what happens on the painted surface, under the maker's test conditions. They do not replace cleaning, and they do not treat a damp wall.
  • Anti-mould and anti-fungal. The additive slows growth on the paint film. If the wall is wet from a leak or condensation, mould returns whatever the tin says; the anti-mould paint guide explains what such paint can and cannot do.
  • Formaldehyde and air-quality. Paints that absorb or convert formaldehyde are sold for bedrooms and nurseries, often alongside new cabinets. They are a sensible extra, not a reason to skip ventilation or to accept high-emission boards.

If one wall keeps blistering or peeling, the paint brand is rarely the cause; the peeling paint guide walks through moisture and preparation first.

Which kind of paint for which room

RoomWhat matters mostLook for
Bedrooms and nurseryLow odour during the job, calm matt finishLow-odour or formaldehyde-claim ranges, matt
Living and diningEven colour on large walls, hides flawsSmooth matt with good opacity
Corridors and kids' wallsMarks wiped off without shiny patchesStain-resistant or washable ranges
Kitchen (dry side)Grease spots, frequent wipingWashable finish, low sheen if the wall is flat
Bathroom ceilings and damp-prone roomsMould on the filmAnti-fungal additive, plus ventilation

Preparation matters more than the brand

A premium paint over a poorly prepared wall looks worse than a mid-range paint over a good one. Fill holes and cracks, sand the patches, prime bare plaster and patched areas, and let new plaster dry before painting. The guide to patching walls before repainting covers the fillers and primers. Colour changes from dark to light need an extra primer coat and usually more top coats, whichever brand you choose.

Because labour and preparation are most of a repaint, the brand changes the total less than people expect. If you are buying the paint yourself and paying for labour only, the labour-only vs supply-and-apply guide explains how to compare the two kinds of quote.

Common Questions

Which is better for interior walls, Nippon, Dulux or Jotun?
Their premium interior ranges are similar water-based emulsions sold on washability, additives and air-quality claims. Choose by room and finish, and spend on preparation; the brand matters less than the wall underneath.
How much does it cost to repaint a room?
ClickBina's guides put interior painting at RM400 – RM900 per room, or RM2 – RM5 per sq ft for labour and paint (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
How many coats of interior paint do I need?
The product pages compared here recommend two coats over a prepared, primed wall. Dark-to-light colour changes usually need an extra primer coat and often more top coats.
Do anti-bacterial paints really work?
They are the manufacturer's claims about the paint surface under test conditions. They do not replace cleaning and will not stop mould on a wall that stays damp.
What is the difference between matt and low sheen?
Matt hides wall flaws but marks more easily; low sheen wipes clean more easily but shows patching and bumps.
Is premium paint worth it?
On busy walls and in rooms you sleep in, often yes. ClickBina's guides list premium emulsion at RM120 – RM250 per 5L against RM70 – RM130 for mid-range; labour is the larger part of a repaint.
Which paint suits a bedroom?
A low-odour matt range, applied with the room well ventilated, and aired before anyone sleeps in it.
