Aluminium vs uPVC Windows
Which Frame Suits a Malaysian Home (2026)

Replacing windows and torn between aluminium and uPVC? Here is how they compare on heat, noise, climate, repair and cost.

Black aluminium casement window beside a white uPVC casement window on a terrace house wall

Aluminium is the default window frame in Malaysia: strong, rust-free, slim and available in almost any powder-coated colour. uPVC insulates better against heat and noise and does not corrode, but costs more and is less common locally. For most homes aluminium is enough; uPVC earns its price where traffic noise or a hot west-facing room is the real problem. ClickBina's doors and windows guide lists an aluminium casement window at RM250 – RM600 per panel and a uPVC casement at RM500 – RM1,200 per panel (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

The two frame materials in brief

Aluminium windows are made from extruded aluminium sections, usually powder-coated, with the glass held in by rubber gaskets. They are what most Malaysian terraces and condos already have. uPVC windows are made from hollow, multi-chamber plastic profiles, usually white or with a foil finish, and often reinforced with steel inside for stiffness. They are common in Europe and increasingly offered here for premium homes and high-rise units where noise matters.

ClickBina's doors and windows guide sums up the trade-off: aluminium does not rust, is strong and low-maintenance, comes in a wide colour range and has slim sightlines, but conducts heat, though thermally broken versions exist; uPVC has excellent thermal and acoustic insulation and does not corrode or warp, but costs more, comes in limited colours and is less common locally.

Heat: does uPVC make a room cooler?

In a hot room, most of the heat comes through the glass, not the frame. A west-facing bedroom with plain single glass will stay hot whether the frame is aluminium or uPVC. The frame matters more once the glass has been upgraded: with laminated or double glazing, an aluminium frame that is not thermally broken becomes the weak line around the pane, and a uPVC frame helps.

  • If heat is the main complaint, look at the glass first: tinted, laminated or double glazing, or a good window film.
  • Add shading outside where possible: an awning, a canopy or a deeper overhang stops sun before it reaches the glass.
  • Only then weigh the frame; uPVC or thermally broken aluminium adds a smaller further gain.

Noise: where uPVC earns its price

Noise is where the difference is clearest. ClickBina's soundproof windows guide explains that sound leaks through gaps first, so a casement that closes onto compressed seals beats a sliding window almost regardless of material. The doors and windows guide lists a uPVC frame over aluminium as an acoustic upgrade — a better seal, with a hollow-chamber frame that absorbs vibration — at a cost premium of about +50–100% over aluminium.

For a bedroom facing a highway or a busy road, a well-sealed uPVC casement with laminated glass is one of the strongest upgrades available. For a quiet street, a good aluminium casement with fresh seals may be all you need.

Rain, sun and the Malaysian climate

Heavy rain tests the seals and drainage, not the frame material. Both types need proper drainage slots, sloped sills and a sealed joint between frame and wall. Sun is a different matter: uPVC must be a profile stabilised for strong UV, or white frames can yellow and become brittle over time. Ask the supplier which profile system is used and where it has been installed in Malaysia. Aluminium's powder coating can chalk and fade in strong sun and pit near the sea, which is why the coating quality matters; our aluminium powder coating guide explains what to check.

Casement, sliding and fixed windows

The opening type often matters as much as the material. Sliding windows are compact and cheap, but their brush seals leak air, sound and wind-driven rain more than a casement. Casements close onto compressed gaskets and seal better, but need room to open and strong hinges and stays. Fixed panes seal best of all. Both aluminium and uPVC come in all three types; uPVC suppliers mostly push casement and tilt-and-turn styles, which is part of why uPVC windows test well for noise.

When comparing quotes, check that each names the frame system, the glass type and thickness, the hardware, whether old frames are removed and how the gap to the wall is sealed and finished.

Repair, parts and replacing a few windows

Aluminium windows are easy to repair in Malaysia: rollers, stays, handles, locks and rubber seals are stocked widely, and any fabricator can make a matching panel. Our window repair guide covers the common fixes. uPVC hardware is often specific to the profile system, so check that the supplier holds spares and will still be around. If you only replace a few windows, think about how they will look next to the rest; white uPVC beside bronze or black aluminium can look odd on a facade.

In condos, the management usually controls the facade. Check the house rules on window colour, material and opening type before ordering, and get approval in writing.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose aluminium for most rooms, large sliding doors, wide panes, specific colours and when budget matters.
  • Choose uPVC casements for bedrooms facing heavy traffic, and for units where noise and draughts are the main complaints.
  • Consider thermally broken aluminium if you want slim frames and a colour choice with better insulation.
  • Whatever the frame, spend on the glass and the seals: they decide most of the heat and noise performance.

Common Questions

Is uPVC better than aluminium for windows in Malaysia?
Better for insulation and noise, and it does not corrode; aluminium is stronger, slimmer, cheaper, available in more colours and easier to repair locally. For most rooms aluminium is enough.
How much do uPVC windows cost in Malaysia?
ClickBina's doors and windows guide lists a uPVC casement window at RM500–RM1,200 per panel, against RM250–RM600 for an aluminium casement (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Will uPVC windows make my room cooler?
A little. Most heat comes through the glass, so upgrade the glass and add shading first; the frame adds a smaller gain.
Are uPVC windows good for noise?
Yes. A well-sealed uPVC casement with laminated glass is one of the strongest noise upgrades, especially compared with sliding windows.
Does uPVC turn yellow in the sun?
Profiles not stabilised for strong UV can yellow and turn brittle. Ask which profile system is used and where it has been installed in Malaysia.
Can I mix uPVC and aluminium windows in one house?
Yes, but check how they look side by side, and in a condo check the facade rules and get approval first.
Which is easier to repair?
Aluminium. Its parts are widely stocked and any fabricator can make a matching panel; uPVC hardware is often tied to one profile system.
