Metal Roof & Awning Noisy in Heavy Rain
Causes and Quieting Options (2026)

Rain on a metal roof or awning drowning out the TV? Find which noise it is and which fix actually works.

Heavy rain on a corrugated metal awning behind a terrace house, with an upper gutter above

Rain on a bare metal sheet is loud because the thin sheet drums like a speaker; ClickBina's roof comparison notes that published noise ratings are low for tiles, moderate for insulated longspan and high for IBR corrugated sheet. The fixes, in order: stop anything dripping or rattling (overflowing gutters, aircon water, loose screws), add insulation under the sheet, put a ceiling with insulation below it, or replace the sheet with an insulated or solid-deck roof. ClickBina's guides list re-screwing with new washers at RM500 – RM1,200 and reflective sarking during a re-roof at RM1,500 – RM2,500 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).

Why metal roofs and awnings are loud in rain

A metal sheet is thin, stiff and light. When heavy tropical rain hits it, the whole panel vibrates and radiates that vibration as sound, much like the skin of a drum. Clay and concrete tiles are heavy and absorb most of the impact, which is why a tiled house stays quiet in the same storm. ClickBina's metal vs tile roof comparison sums up the published ratings: low noise for tiles, moderate for longspan with insulation and high for IBR corrugated sheet.

Awnings are often worse than the main roof because they are a single bare sheet on a light frame, with nothing underneath to absorb sound, fixed straight to the wall of the room you are sitting in. The noise travels into the house through the wall as well as through the air.

Rain noise, drip noise or rattle? Name the sound first

Not every noise on a metal roof is the rain itself. The fix depends on which one you are hearing.

What you hearLikely causeWhere to look
Steady roar over the whole roof in heavy rainThe sheet drumming; no insulation or ceiling belowThe roof build-up
Loud single drops, even after the rain stopsWater dripping onto the sheet from aboveUpper gutters, roof edges, aircon pipes, trees
Tapping in one spot on a dry dayAircon condensate dripping onto the awningOutdoor units and drain pipes above
Rattling or banging in windLoose screws, sheets or ridge caps moving on the frameFasteners, laps, ridge, flashings
Creaks and ticks as the sun comes outThe sheet expanding and contractingTight fixings, no allowance for movement
Rushing water sound inside a wallDownpipe or gutter overflowGutters and downpipes

Stand under the roof during rain and after it, and note which of these you hear. The drip and rattle noises are usually cheap to fix and should be sorted before spending on insulation.

Stop the drips first

A lower awning under a double-storey house collects everything that falls from above: water from an upper gutter that overflows or has a gap, run-off from the upper roof edge without a gutter, and condensate from the aircon units on the upper floor. Each drop landing on a bare sheet sounds like a hammer, and it can go on long after the rain.

  • Clear and repair the upper gutters so they do not overflow onto the awning.
  • Extend or reroute aircon drain pipes so they run into a drain instead of onto the sheet.
  • Add a gutter or a drip edge where the upper roof sheds water straight onto the lower one.
  • Cut back branches that drop water and leaves onto the roof.

If the water comes from the unit next door, our guide to a neighbour's aircon dripping explains how to raise it.

Fix rattles and loose sheets

A metal roof moves every day as it heats and cools. Over the years that movement elongates the screw holes and works fasteners loose, so sheets, ridge caps and flashings start to lift and bang in wind. The same loose fixings are also where metal roofs leak. Re-screwing with new bonded washers, and resealing laps, ridge caps and flashings, quietens the rattle and fixes the leak at the same time; our metal roof leak repair guide covers that work.

Insulate under the sheet

The most effective way to quieten an existing metal roof is to add mass and absorption under the sheet. The options, from the roof insulation guide:

  • Foil-faced underlay or sarking laid under the sheets during a re-roof; it cuts heat and some noise, but only goes in when the sheets are off.
  • Rockwool or glasswool above a ceiling; soft, dense insulation absorbs sound as well as heat.
  • Spray-applied foam on the underside of a metal deck, which bonds to the sheet and damps the drumming directly.
  • Insulated sandwich panels: metal skins with an insulating core, used when the sheets are being replaced anyway.

Insulation also cuts heat, and on a metal roof it is often heat, not noise, that people complain about first. Any insulation must go onto a roof that does not leak: wet insulation stops working and can hide rust.

Add a ceiling below

A ceiling under the roof, with insulation laid on top of it, puts an air gap and a barrier between the sheet and the room. Under a main roof this is the normal build-up. Under a kitchen extension or a covered patio that was left open to the sheet, adding a ceiling is often the single biggest improvement for noise and heat. Our acoustic ceiling guide explains how sound-absorbing ceilings are built.

Change the roofing or the awning material

When the sheet is rusty or leaking anyway, replacing it is the moment to choose a quieter roof. Options include insulated sandwich panels, a metal sheet over a solid deck (our standing seam roof guide notes that a roof over a solid deck is quieter in rain), or tiles on the main roof and metal only over a car porch or store.

For awnings, the material matters as much as the build. A single thin metal sheet is the loudest. Multiwall polycarbonate, with its hollow flutes, and insulated panels are quieter; our polycarbonate roofing guide covers the sheet types and the correct installation. Whatever the choice, a solid fixing into the wall and a proper wall flashing stop the awning from rattling and leaking into the house.

The cheapest wins are the drips and the rattles. Insulation and a ceiling cost more but also cut heat, which is usually worth as much as the quiet.

Common Questions

Why is my metal roof so loud when it rains?
The thin sheet vibrates like a drum. Without insulation or a ceiling below, that sound goes straight into the room.
How can I reduce rain noise on a metal roof?
Stop drips and rattles first, then add insulation under the sheet, a ceiling below, or replace the sheet with an insulated or solid-deck roof.
Why does my awning make noise after the rain has stopped?
Water is still dripping onto it from an upper gutter, roof edge or aircon pipe. Redirect the water and the tapping stops.
Is polycarbonate quieter than a metal awning?
Multiwall polycarbonate, with hollow flutes, is generally quieter than a single thin metal sheet; insulated panels are quieter still.
Why does my roof bang in the wind?
Loose screws, sheets, ridge caps or flashings are moving on the frame. Re-screwing and resealing fixes the noise and the leaks that come with it.
How much does re-screwing a metal roof cost?
ClickBina's metal roof leak repair guide lists re-screwing with new bonded washers at RM500–RM1,200 (indicative 2026, Klang Valley).
Will roof insulation also reduce heat?
Yes. Insulation under a metal roof cuts heat as well as noise, but only on a roof that does not leak.
