What counts as a pantry cabinet here

In Malaysian kitchens the word “pantry” rarely means a walk-in room. It means a tall unit — a floor-to-ceiling cabinet, usually 600 mm deep, that holds dry goods, small appliances, brooms, or an oven and microwave stacked in a tower. It is the same object a cabinet maker calls a larder or a tall unit, and it is the piece of kitchen storage that does the most work per foot of floor it occupies, because it uses the two metres of wall above waist height that base and wall cabinets leave half empty.

A typical single tall unit is 2 to 3 feet wide, so most households are pricing one or two feet of that rate, not a whole wall of it — which is why a pantry is usually a far smaller line on the quote than people fear. Where the number climbs is internal fit-out: a plain shelved larder and a fully mechanised pull-out pantry with soft-close drawers are the same box with very different insides.

Why a tall unit costs more than two base feet

The multiplier is not a mark-up. A tall unit is genuinely more cabinet:

  • More material. A 2.4 m tall carcass uses roughly two to three times the board of a base unit of the same width, plus a full-height back panel.
  • More doors, or bigger ones. Tall units usually take two stacked doors or one very large one, and a tall door needs more hinges — commonly three to four (four or more on a full-height door) instead of two.
  • Structural demands. A loaded larder holds serious weight. The shelves need thicker board or support rails, the carcass needs to stay square, and the unit must be fixed back to the wall so it cannot tip.
  • Fitting is harder. Tall units have to be scribed to an uneven ceiling and a wall that is never plumb, and they have to be manoeuvred upright into a room with a ceiling in it.
  • More internals. Shelves, dividers, drawers and pull-outs are all inside that same foot.

The corollary is that the multiplier should be visible on your quote as its own line, not buried in an average rate. If a quote gives one blended per-foot number for a kitchen that includes tall units, you cannot compare it with anything.

The options, cheapest first: fixed shelves (nothing to buy, worst usability); shelves plus internal drawer boxes on ball-bearing runners for the lower half, which is the best value move in most pantries; full-extension pull-out baskets or a wire larder frame; and at the top a full mechanised pull-out pantry unit where the entire internal rack comes out with the door. A terrace or semi-detached kitchen usually has 15 to 20 feet of run and often a second wall doing nothing, which is where a proper pantry wall belongs: a bank of two or three tall units, floor to ceiling, holding dry goods, small appliances, an appliance tower and cleaning equipment in one place. Built as a continuous run it reads as a wall of joinery rather than as furniture, and it takes all the clutter out of the working kitchen opposite.

The practical advice is to build it full height to the ceiling rather than stopping short. The gap above a 2.1 m unit is dead space that collects grease and dust and is impossible to clean; a bulkhead or a full-height carcass costs a little more and removes the problem permanently. Heights, depths and the reach problem

Tall units are conventionally built to the ceiling, with 600 mm depth to match the base run, and internally divided so that the zones match how far you can actually reach. The band from about knee height to shoulder height is prime storage and should hold what you use daily. Below that, use drawers rather than shelves — a low fixed shelf 600 mm deep is unusable in practice. Above shoulder height, store light and seasonal items, and accept that you will need a step stool.

Two dimensions people get wrong. First, door swing: a 2.4 m tall door needs clear space in front and will hit an island or a fridge that is too close, so tall units want to sit at the end of a run or opposite an open floor. Second, depth: 600 mm deep with fixed shelves means the back third is lost, so either specify a pull-out or drop to 400 mm and gain the floor space instead. Where the pantry sits in a wet and dry kitchen

In a home with a wet and dry kitchen split, the pantry almost always belongs in the dry kitchen. It stores packaged food, small appliances and crockery, none of which want to sit in cooking steam and grease — and the dry kitchen is also where a melamine or laminate carcass is entirely appropriate, so the tall unit costs less there than it would in the wet zone. Keep the wet kitchen for the cooking run and its heavy-duty materials.

Appliance towers: oven, microwave and the rest

A tall unit is also the natural home for a built-in oven and microwave, stacked at eye level in a tower — which is far more comfortable than an under-counter oven and frees the base run for drawers. It changes the specification, though. The tower needs a dedicated electrical point behind it, planned before tiling; the appliance manufacturer’s ventilation clearances have to be built into the aperture, not improvised; and the shelf under a heavy oven needs proper support.

Get the appliance model before the cabinet is drawn. Built-in oven apertures vary between brands, and a tower built to a generic opening and then met with a different oven is a rework, not an adjustment. The same applies to a tall fridge housing. How to get pantry storage for less

  • Use melamine inside. Nobody sees the interior of a pantry. A cheaper carcass board is entirely rational here as long as the unit is in a dry zone.
  • Buy drawers, not gadgets. Internal drawer boxes on decent runners in the lower half deliver most of the usability of a full mechanised pull-out for a fraction of the hardware cost.
  • One wide unit beats two narrow ones. Two 2-foot units cost two sets of doors, hinges and side panels; one 4-foot unit shares them.
  • Go full height. The extra half-metre to the ceiling is the cheapest storage in the kitchen and removes the dust gap.
  • Skip depth you cannot reach. A 400 mm unit with shelves often beats a 600 mm one without a pull-out, and costs less.

What a pantry quote should list

Then: carcass board and thickness, door material and finish, edge banding type, number of hinges per tall door, shelf thickness and whether shelves are adjustable, exactly which internal drawers or pull-outs are included and their load rating, whether the unit is built full height to the ceiling or to a fixed height with a bulkhead, and how it is fixed back to the wall.
