Cabinet Hardware Brands
Blum vs Hettich vs Häfele vs Generic (2026)

Who the three European names are, what their product lines do, and how to make sure the quote says what you get.

Concealed cabinet hinges, drawer runners and a lift-up mechanism laid out on a plywood workbench

Blum, Hettich and Häfele are the three European hardware names you will meet on Malaysian cabinet quotes; below them sit DTC-type Asian brands and unbranded generic parts. Blum is an Austrian family company, Hettich and Häfele are German family companies, and all three make hinges, drawer systems and lift fittings. ClickBina's hinge guide puts a soft-close hinge at RM18 – RM40 each for a European brand, against RM8 – RM20 for a generic or DTC-type one (market estimate 2026, Klang Valley). The brand matters less than writing the exact product line on the quotation.

Across a whole kitchen the tier choice is real money, but it is still a small share of the cabinet price. The larger risk is a quote that says "soft-close hardware" and nothing else, which leaves the supplier able to fit the cheapest part that matches the words.

The three tiers on the Malaysian market

The soft-close hinge guide describes three tiers. Unbranded generic hinges are the cheapest and the most variable; some are fine in a low-use cupboard, others have a weak damper, and a matching replacement may not exist in a few years. Mid-tier branded hardware, with DTC the name most often heard in Malaysian kitchens, gives consistent engineering and proper adjustment, and the same model is usually still sold years later. For most households that tier is the sensible default. European brands sit at the top: what the money buys is consistency, better behaviour under load, finer adjustment and long-term parts availability.

Blum: the Austrian specialist

Julius Blum GmbH is a family-owned company based in Höchst, in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg. It was founded in 1952 by Julius Blum, began making furniture hinges in 1958, and today makes hinge, lift and runner systems for the cabinet and furniture industry, according to its Wikipedia entry. Blum specialises in furniture fittings, which is why its names turn up on so many quotes.

The product names you will see, from Blum's Malaysian site:

  • CLIP top BLUMOTION — concealed hinges with integrated soft-close.
  • AVENTOS — lift systems for wall and tall cabinets (HK, HS, HL, HF and other versions). The lift-up fittings guide explains the motions.
  • LEGRABOX, MERIVOBOX, TANDEMBOX — double-walled metal drawer box systems.
  • MOVENTO, TANDEM — concealed runners for wooden drawers.
  • TIP-ON, SERVO-DRIVE — push-to-open and electrical opening support for handleless fronts.

Hettich: the German all-rounder

Hettich is a German family business headquartered in Kirchlengern, North Rhine-Westphalia. Its history goes back to 1888, when Karl Hettich founded a metalworking business in the Black Forest; it makes hinges, drawer and runner systems and connecting fittings, according to its Wikipedia entry, and its own product pages also list sliding and folding door systems. Hettich serves Malaysian buyers through its Singapore regional site.

Hinge names from Hettich's hinge range:

  • Sensys — quick-fit concealed hinge with integrated damping.
  • Avosys — concealed hinge suited to glass and mirror doors, with integrated soft-closing.
  • Veosys — corrosion-resistant stainless steel hinge for indoors and outdoors; worth asking about for a wet kitchen or a laundry cabinet.
  • Selekta — single-joint hinge for commercial and public areas.

Because Hettich also makes sliding door systems, its name can come up on wardrobe quotes too; the wardrobe fittings guide covers what goes inside.

Häfele: maker and supplier

Häfele is a German family enterprise based in Nagold, founded in 1923 by Adolf Häfele. It makes and supplies furniture fittings, such as hinges, drawer systems, handles, connectors and ambient lighting, and architectural hardware, such as door hardware and electronic locks. Its Wikipedia entry records a subsidiary in Shah Alam, Malaysia, since 1993, and lift fittings sold under the name Free and sliding door fittings under the name Slido.

Because Häfele also distributes a wide range, a Häfele part number on a quote is not automatically the same tier as a Blum or Hettich hinge. Ask which product line it is, and whether it is a Häfele-made item or one it supplies.

None of the three is the right answer for every cabinet. Choose by the product line the cabinet maker actually stocks and can service, and by the door weight and use, not by the logo.

Where premium hardware earns its price

  • Kitchen drawers — pot drawers carry the most weight and the most cycles; a metal drawer system pays back here first. The drawer runner guide explains the types.
  • Lift-up wall doors — a lift mechanism has to be matched to the door's size and weight; branded systems publish that matching.
  • Glass, mirror and tall doors — heavy fronts need hinges rated for them.
  • Wet kitchens and laundries — corrosion-resistant hinges matter more than soft-close.
  • Low-use cupboards — a store cupboard or a high wall unit opened twice a week does not need the top tier.

Checking what you actually received

  1. Write the brand and the product line on the quotation, not only "soft-close".
  2. Look for the brand name or logo stamped on the hinge arm, the mounting plate and the runner.
  3. Check that hinges, plates and runners are from the same system; mixing plates and hinges causes misalignment.
  4. Keep a spare hinge and runner, or the product codes, for future replacements.
  5. Open every door and drawer at handover; soft-close should catch the last part of every movement.

Hardware that looks branded but carries no marking is a reason to ask before final payment. The factory-made vs site-built carpentry guide lists hardware brand as one of the items to have written into the specification.

What the quotation should say

  • Hinge brand and line, and soft-close or not, for each door type.
  • Runner or drawer system brand and line, with full or partial extension.
  • Lift-up fitting brand and line for every wall unit that lifts.
  • Whether glass, tall or heavy doors get a different hinge.
  • Who supplies replacement parts after handover.

When two cabinet quotes differ, line up the hardware first. The guide to hidden charges on cabinet quotes shows the other lines that change between quotes.
